The Cowboys go into simple Prevent defense mode every time

Once the opposing offense gets a penalty, I get really peeved at how the Cowboys go into simple Prevent defense mode every time. Guaranteed, if more than 15 yards are needed, the Cowboys are playing a soft zone, and will easily give up 10 to 15 yards, negating the true advantage of 1st and 20. Now it's 2nd and 10, or 2nd and 7, almost like the penalty never happened. Free yardage. Almost no resistance those 1st 10 yards or so.

I'm hoping Richard at least starts to threaten to blitz on 1st or 2nd and long, or disguise a man coverage with a zone look, SOMEthing. Sheesh! This "play it safe" defensive mentality with no chess match involved at the LOS, especially in long yardage situations, simply hoping the offense makes a mistake, it's maddening. The most we can hope for is a defensive line stunt.

Anyone else frustrated by this?

As much as it bothers me, till this point, our pass rush was a Tank and nothing else. So not really surprising they wouldn't want to risk overexposing our pass coverage to big plays.

To be aggressive on defense you gotta be able to hold point at DT (we can’t), Rush the passer (we can’t) and have a great centerfield safety (we don’t)

Hope that answers your question

Don't need to BE aggressive, simply need to LOOK aggressive sometimes. So instead of having the LBs 8 yards off the LOS on 1st and 20, how about put them in the gaps to look like a blitz, and then they can drop at the snap?

If the front 4 can't produce pressure, sometime bring a 5th, on 1st and 20 too, and not always the damn slot CB blitz either. Something other than a safe Prevent zone defense on 1st and 20. Hec, can we at least play cover 2 man? Sheesh!

I haven't seen many 3-man rushes this season, thank GOODness. That's the worst, especially when it's not disguised, so then the QB knows it's coming, knows he will have all day.
They are pretty much getting all day anyways. I was happy to see we only gave up 255 yards. Wonder how much was due to prevent.

The 3 times the Skins were in long yardage due to a penalty.

1-20-WAS 34 (10:38) (Shotgun) C.Keenum pass short left to C.Thompson pushed ob at WAS 43 for 9 yards (B.Jones).
Series ends with a punt on 4th and 3.

1-20-DAL 38 (3:16) S.Sims left end pushed ob at DAL 34 for 4 yards (X.Woods). End around
The Skins get to 3rd & 8 and get the 1st down.

1-15-WAS 48 (11:05) (Shotgun) W.Smallwood left guard to DAL 48 for 4 yards (X.Woods; J.Smith).
Series ends with a punt on 4th and 24.

This makes no sense. Youre aggressive when you cant do these things. Also since Kris has been with us we have blitz more in 1 season and 2 games than we did with Rod since he has been with the team

I dont always agree with the style of play for this defense, but so far I cant argue the results.

Agree, but the fan in us wants to see shutout football, and no chance of a fluke play or two costing us a win. Also the tendency to give up a score before halftime/after. All ingrained in us from past disappoints...

Hopefully we see continued dominance by the O, and the D slowly but surely rack up the sacks, turnovers as the seasons progresses and keep us out of the tight anything can happen nail biters....

So far teams are 4 of 20 on 3rd down. Look if a team is sitting there with a 3rd and 15 or 3rd and 20 I don't give a damn if they throw a 10 yard pass and tackled leaving them with 4th down.

Agreed. This is definitely one reason I don't trust Richard calling the plays and as future D-Coordinator.

Nobody can argue with the point that the D hasn't been sharp so far. Nobody can argue with 2-0 either. But some will still try. Give it time. We need to peak in Dec-Jan, not Sept.

I think they cut the yards allowed in half from the giants game. That’s improvement. And the skins are better than the giants.
