i'm a coach, i know coaching and he's plenty creative. we just aren't executing....it's up to the players to execute a good scheme.

You take the 7 yard button hook out of the Linehan playbook...you might be left with 3 running plays...and half a dozen passing plays. No wonder Dez hated this offense.

Scott (and Garrett) for that matter get more hate from this board than is warranted. Scott lacked in creativity but if you look at the totality of the offensive performance of the cowboys since Jason arrived on the scene....we have been comfortably better than average almost always and pretty damn close to elite more than our fair share.
How many playoff wins did that combo get us? I’ll hang up and listen ......

Now, now, now, Hennessey ...... maybe JG isn’t so bad. We KNOW Rod sucks but maybe JG has been decent in spite of Rod and Linehan.

It seems like when this board gets a strong concensus we are usually right as a group. Linehan obviously was universally hated by most on this board. He is gone and it appears we were right again.
Everyone loved the Linnehan signing the 1st couple seasons, anyone but Garrett. Now Moore is the guy BUT after a few loses which will happen....Moore is too young and he is getting exposed OR Garrett is holding him back and not letting him run his own plays!

Everyone loved it because it got Garrett away from calling plays. But as soon as the Garrett playbook was forced onto him, Garrett started loving him and the entire world turned on him.

He should have stood up to Garrett and dump his crappy into the garbage can. If he's going to get fired, do so doing the right thing.

It's hard to judge other than the games after Cooper arrived and even then Cooper with no training camp and Gallup as a rookie plus Beasley instead of Cobb were big limitations for any OC.

Prior to Cooper, the WR group was a mess with Hurns as the #1 to start the season.

In previous years, it was:
Dez
TWill
Beasley
Witten

I don't need to tell you how limiting that group was to play design & play calling.
Dez: Terrible route runner and not predictable.

TWill: Struggled with short quick passes that were not in the air long enough but also not a deep ball WR. He was limited to the intermediate area.

Beasley: Good short area WR but not a deep threat or YAC threat.

Witten: Redundant with Beasley in the short area. Played 100% of offensive snaps in 2017. Now playing about half the snaps.

I was not a fan of Linehan but the deck was stacked against him and they were good in 2016 and 2014.

The WR issues were masked by Romo. Witten was good in 2014. In 2016 both Dez and Witten were much better physically than in 2017 when both looked very sluggish.

Also it appears that Stephen Jones has basically removed Garrett from the offensive game planning process now which was not really true previously.

Linehan did bring Kellen Moore and did insist on keeping him either as a backup QB and then QB coach.

It was Linehan and Wade Wilson that wanted to draft Dak after working with him at the Senior Bowl.

It also seemed that Linehan preferred to move on and let Moore take over. (Linehan does get paid this year by the Cowboys). Linehan like Callahan previously grew tired of Garrett.

Ok coach. We believe you. Everyone else is wrong.
sorry...it was flippant....it was what someone used to say to me when i complained about the playcalling and routes especially after the cooper dak eagles game..... i'll edit to include a wink to make it more clear.

edit: not sure why i can't edit the original anymore but yeah....it was humor....

Most everyone around the league runs the same plays aside from Baltimore running the option.

perfect example is the TD to Smith. It was a carbon copy of what the Commanders ran vs the Eagles the week before.

Coaching is about knowing what your offense can and can’t handle. Long developing routes are ok if the OL can hold up like they are this year. Not so much if it blocks like last year (see difference of Frederick).

The QB has to be able to make the throws required. This year Dak has so far. Last 3 years he couldn’t consistently.

We will never know how much of that was due to Romo calling audibles and overcoming. I will, however give Linehan credit for what was accomplished in 2016. This year we are seeing a dramatically different offensive mind set and the contrast is startling. If we keep purring along it will be a strong indictment against Linehan.

And confirmation for all of the valid criticism Linehan did receive. As if his continued unemployment status as NFL pariah wasn't confirmation enough already.

Like this thread headline reads - "This board was right on Linehan". Except for those that always try to excuse coaching from any blame.

True, and the NFL is all about recycling coaches.

Linehan was good in 2014 and 2016 because we had a lack of tendencies.

He never made teams pay for overplaying our offense.

We were predictable and played into every tendency we created.

Cowboys offense has been awful for a decade really. We make defensive assignment easy because they knew exactly what we were doing and our guys had to athlete them.

2017 was a strong indictment against Linehan. Last season's offense was a strong indictment against Linehan. Everyone and their mother was predicting what the Cowboys were going to do.

Adjustments needed to be made and he continued to fail to do so, insisting on "beating your man" every time. It's hard to do when "your man" knows everything you're going to do in advance.

It's really bad that people are still trying to defend their logic about how Linehan or Garrett's offense weren't the problem.

The coaches made our players easy to defend. The players had to overcome the coaching.

Now it's the opposite. I've never seen defenses looked so confused and our offense just take free yards from the defense because of the spacing and disguising that Kellen Moore provides.

I don't recall Dak taking so many deep shots so early in the season and a lot of that has to do with aggressive play calling.
I believe the difference is where the deep shots are going. Dak has been throwing sideline "Go" and "Fade" routes often before this season. The deep shots between the hashes seem to be a new thing.

Little Scotty was way too predictable
But much of the improvement has not just been play calling
We’ve got Fred back, Williams in his second year, smith playing good and Gallup in a second year
I wanted Scotty gone but it remains to be seen if Moore is really a genius or if just improved talent has made the difference
Time will tell as the season plays out
