How much did the 5 team division help us in the 80s and 90s

I was thinking about how the Patriots have won their division every year since like 2009, and I was wondering how much did our division help us in the 90s?

How much did getting to play Arizona twice a year help us historically?

The divisional opponent the Cowboys have beaten at the highest percentage in franchise history? The Cardinals and it isn't even close.

We beat them every time from December 1990 until September 1997.

There may have been a whipping boy or 2 in every division, but I can't say....and I'm not one of those people who wants to do that kind of research. lol

There is almost always going to be at least one bad team in every division every year. The problem with the Patriots is that they usually have 3, and when they don't, they at least have 2.

It’s something that could be researched if you want to put in the time. But always remember, the Patriots with Bellichick have basically the same winning percentage outside the division as they do inside it, so that doesn’t explain their dominance.

1 chump team doesn't make much of a difference considering that the NFC East teams have combined to be "the most successful division in the NFL since the 1970 NFL merger with 21 NFC Championship wins and 13 Super Bowl victories, the highest marks of any division in the NFL."

In the 90s it was Arizona, but they always gave the Cowboys a good game. They had 3 different SB champions in a row come from the East 90, 91 and 92 and the Eagles were always everyone's SB favorite. I think playing in that Division at the time helped the young Boys get past the 49ers and Bill's, because the division was so physical.

In the 80s Commanders, Giants and Eagles were in their prime and Cowboys were fading, Arizona was Arizona.

It sure didn't help getting to play the cardinals in 1998.

It helped the 49ers and not Dallas. The NFC West only had the 4-team division then. So they always got to play the last place team in NFC East and Central every year. With that weak division they were in, just like the Patriots the last 2 decades, the 49ers were awarded 8 bye weeks every season. Year in and year out, they got to pad their stats to make themselves look better than they really are.

Meanwhile, Dallas, Washington, Philadelphia, NY Giants, and Chicago had to slug it out with blood bath games - hence weakening themselves in the post season when San Francisco, like New England today, was relatively fresh.

When those 4 teams I mentioned above won Super Bowls from 1981-1995, they EARNED IT!

Yes, I know, Eagles never won a Super Bowl then. The same still applies for them though.

I don't think it helps. I don't think it doesn't help. You still have to go out there and produce in my opinion some say the old 49ers, world like the Patriots week division

That is just to say that given the overall average of the NFL their success wouldn't change. Very different from saying that if Pittsburgh or Baltimore was in their division things would be the same.

Aikman was 50-33 against NFC East opponents. He was 44-38 against the rest of the nfl.

I think it sucked, the Cowboys had 8 division games in a three division conference.

Every one of those teams had their competitive periods, you had Air Coryel with the Cardinals, the Commander's Allen and Gibbs
eras, the Giant's Parcell's defense and also the early Buddy Ryan Eagles. The NFC east was a total bloodbath, every team playingeaxh other twice.

but we still had to play Parcells' Giants...who won Super Bowls.....and Gibbs' Commanders...who won Super Bowls.
wasn't easy in The East back then...or now.
