The fact so many people have been calling for Riley to be the new coach just shows how much these people really understand football. The guy hasn't had a defense yet and all those who talk about him being a, "genius," just shows how little they understand the game. It's easy to look smart when you have better talent and play in a conference where defense is optional.

Urban lost 31-0 to Clemson in the semifinals in 2016. Does this disqualify him also?
Yes. Along with all his other baggage.
There is a coach out there that can turn the Cowboys into winners. There is a coach out there that can get the job done without being JJ's yes-man. Lincoln and Urban aren't the answers. It should be and will be someone unexpected that has the stones to speak truth to power. Someone that will lay it out for Jerry. You have one choice; You can have total control and lose for the rest of your life or you can relinquish some control and have a winner. You cannot have both. That coach is out there. We just have to find him.

A whole bunch of stupidity in this thread. To say Riley doesn't care about defense is false. He was forced to keep Stoops brother and then he finally said enough is enough and fired him and hired Alex Grinch this past season. Defense is much better and getting better each week. Also to say he has a history of nothing is wrong also. His team has played in the last 2 CFB championships, produced 2 Heisman winners and won multiple Big12 titles and still recruits one of the top classes in the country. If you have doubts about him then you should have the same doubts about Meyer. He has never coached a game in the NFL. Granted he has won national titles but it's safe to say Riley is further along in year 3 than Meyer was.

This post didn't age well.

I'll take Rhule thank you.
Rhule basically won coin flip games that were determined by bad calls (Tech, TCU) or miraculous plays (Iowa St). He’s a good coach but I’d rather have a Dan Campbell than Rhule

If we hire Riley, I hope Jerry doesn't let him pick the defensive coordinator. My goodness the OU defense is trash and they put a ton of focus on defense this year.

Yes. We need a coach with a limited resume who doesn’t care about defense and gets his *** kicked every year in the playoffs.

The fact that Riley is a hot item means he has leverage. Why would he want to start his NFL career hobbled by coaches who aren't his guys and a clear lack of authority?

One of the prime guys to stay is Moore. But he'll look like Boy Genius Head Coach in Waiting 2, the Electric Boogaloo. The new HC has to have authority to dump all coaches, or he'll be Wade 2, Yet Another HC in Name Only.

Moore can only stay if the new HC has the authority to fire him. Which is too bad, because the new HC probably *should* fire him as a detriment to his authority.

All of Riley's desirability might well be to avail in terms of Jerry's chances of signing him. It was revealed today on TV during the game between Oklahoma and LSU that he recently stated in an interview that he doesn't think he'd be interested in taking a head coaching position in the NFL.

He's sitting pretty where he is and knows it. I strongly suspect Jerry and Stephen will be looking elsewhere for a head coach in the future. Riley's making $6 mil per year where he is and is happy there at Oklahoma, according to his recent statements. It didn't sound like he's a viable candidate at all.

I honestly have my doubts that Moore has proven himself to be anything special from what I've been hearing and reading lately about his play calling. It's anyone's guess if he'll be retained in the offseason or not. Like I just suggested, I have my doubts that his services can't be outdone by others with more experience but we'll surely see what transpires in the weeks ahead. Jerry and Stephen will probably rely heavily upon others to offer them advice.

Oklahoma gets all the Dallas games every Sunday so I understand the overlap of OU fans and Dallas fans. Same reason you get people on here calling for Stoops. That would be just as awful.

I've said from day one that Lincoln Riley's choice of DC would be important to him making the NFL jump.

Offensively, he is one of the elite minds in the game of football right now. That is an incredibly valuable asset to bring to any team.

If you knew football, you'd understand that.

If Riley is as smart off the field as he is on it, I'd think he'd recognize that he'll never be able to recruit the quantity of elite defenders Oklahoma would need to compete against the powerhouses in the playoffs, and make the jump if the money is right.

Oklahoma is national program, but unlike a Clemson, LSU, Alabama, and Ohio State, they can't go into the south and lure the type of defensive guys you need to win championships.

Oklahoma can get 2 to 3 future NFL defenders each year, while those other programs can land 15 each and every recruiting class.

What exactly makes him elite? I've asked this of others and I've yet to get an explanation.

some quotes:

The 31-year-old whiz is regarded nationally as one of football’s top young offensive minds, and his rapid rise in the college football coaching world affirms that label.

“He had shortcuts that I didn’t even know about,” Conner said. “He’s one of the smartest kids I’ve ever taught. He’s brilliant.”

And the NFL has already taken notice. Coaches are flocking to Norman to pick his brain and see if they can steal anything and add it to their playbook.

“What makes Lincoln so unique is you’re talking about a guy who has figured out the college game and NFL coaches are coming to visit him,” Kirk Herbstreit tells me. “I talked to him a few months ago and he said he used to have four or five NFL guys coming in, now he’s got over 30 guys coming in to figure out what they’re doing. So you have not only one of the best offensive coaches in college, but in football, period.”

from a personal standpoint, he's the brightest coach I've ever got to talk to or listen to. I attended Sean McVay's seminar last spring and I still think Lincoln is more creative. When Lincoln was the OC at East Carolina, he recruited and signed our quarterback from Mesa CC in 2013. He just sees things so easily and can make subtle but effective changes. He gave us some feedback on our offense and they were all game-changers.

That's high praise, to be sure. Why then can't he seem to prepare his defense to stop these offenses he knows so well? Sixty-three points is dreadful and it's not just a lack of talent.
