If the Cowboys can't field a good defense, the McCarthy hire is going to look awful.

If we can get a good defense rolling, McCarthy offenses can steamroll teams.
100%

I've been saying for months that the biggest coaching need for the Cowboys is an upgrade and defensive scheme change, they need to bring in someone with a real defensive pedigree and a proven track record of coaching a top NFL defense.

I'd offer Marvin Lewis a lot of money, but I'd be happy with Nolan as well.

The 2014 defense was trash. It was ok because the offense dominated TOP so heavily. They got away from that this season. O can help the D.

Agree and it is the part I'm most excited about. We need someone who can get our guys to attack vs sitting back and letting teams come to us.

TOP doesn't matter, but an offense that actually scores points early in games will make a big difference.

Hopefully the new DC is a lot more attack-oriented, rather than constantly worried about giving up big plays.

The problem with the BBDB mentality is that when you are in need of a defensive stop , you've been playing passive for 3+ quarters and are not accustomed to having to put pressure on the offense in any way............................Good defenses dictate to the offense ; we've been running a scheme that sits back and allows the opposing team's offense to determine the flow.....................

Would Jerry allow MM to bring in Dom Capers who ran his defense in GB's Super Bowl win? I know he is like almost 70 and is a defensive advisor for Tenn. just throwing stuff out there to see what sticks? Thoughts? (obviously this might be short term ......)

so hed look like the big 12 in Rhule and Rileys ear LMAO...:lmao:

seriously a great or at least very good defense is a necessary need for all teams to succeed. when Peyton didnt have a D his teams were 7-9 3 straight years with Brees..his best year ie SB year they had a solid defense as did Manning and Mccarthy.. so yes bring in a DC that can give us great chance..

No matter who would have been the new HC, the defensive philosophy will be the key factor in their success. This goes for Urban, McCarthy, Riley, Rhule, etc. The DC will be the most important hire for 2020.

And the STC as well.
Think this hire will be as important or maybe slightly less, than the DC. A good special teams coach will do wonders for the team, and go hand in hand with a new defensive philosophy.
I am cautiously optimistic about McCarthy, but as many have said - his choices as his coordinator's will really be very telling, and will either alleviate peoples worry's or add to them. Gonna sit back and wait to see the whole staff he puts together, also, knowing that McCarthy himself will likely call the plays, does he need to retain Moore at all ?

I'm not sure this is even being considered but hiring Lewis as DC is easily a best case scenario. I'm lukewarm on Nolan. Haslett as DC is by far the worst case scenario of all the potential hires I've seen floated out there.

Marvin not interested in being second fiddle. He wanted the top job or nothing to do with Jerry.
