We don’t play in the weak AFC and specifically the AFCE and we seem to hover at around 8 and 8. We have to bite, scratch and claw our way there and don’t ever have the horses to get over the hump.

For where we are drafting McClay is doing a good job. But let’s look, for comparison’s sake at SF who is probably the best team in the NFC this year.

2019: Drafted 2nd overall - Nick Bosa
2018: Drafted 9th: Mike McGlinchy
2017: Drafted 3rd. Overall : Solomon Thomas

That defense is stout for a reason and the running game is good because of the blocking

On top of that they were GIFTED a groomed QB by The Hoodie for a mere second round pick.

It’s no wonder they are the best in the NFL this year.

We dropped about 5 draft spots because we beat the Skins. In doing so did we not only drop 5 spots, we also ensured the Skins the 2nd overall pick and you can bet that one is going to haunt us for the next 7 years or so.

IDK.....there are plenty of teams drafting at or near the bottom every year and do pretty damn good ( Steelers, Ravens, ). We just need to stop getting cute and draft the best players. Stop trying to outsmart other teams coz it's making us look silly.

The notion of us drafting well is sold by Stephen Jones himself, and is simply not true. We have not had a solid draft since 2016, which is an eternity in the NFL.

We have 4 offensive linemen that are better than McGlinchey, and Solomon Thomas isn't even a starter. I'll give you that Bosa is a freak of nature though. The most glaring deficiency I see is that they have Shanahan and we had Garrett.

It's always been the Garrett legacy.

The meaningless wins while losing the games that actually count. How many 'win and you're in' games did that clown gack up? Conversely, how many meaningless 'wins' has he given us? I know we had one against those same Commanders in 2015 during a 4-12 season that did nothing but knock us out of the #2 overall pick. Then we got another one in 2017 in week 17 against an Eagles team that rested its starters before going on to win the Super Bowl. Anyone else remember that awesome 6-0 'win'? Good times, good times. It gave a mediocre coach a 'winning season' and once again hurt this team's draft standing.

And this year? Choke up the division and hand it to the Eagles. but win the next week when it no longer matters.

The Jason Garrett Legacy. Enjoy it Garrett fans.

Stop listening to archaic, stone age coaches and allowing them to overrule the scouts that spent all year studying players and putting together a draft board.

Pittsburgh picked up the probable Defensive player of the year with pick #30 in 2017.

I don't buy the motion you need top picks to make a great team.

People also claim you need to tank for a QB, but the last great QB taken #1 overall was Luck, but his talent wasn't enough to propel the Colts anywhere. then he broke down and retired. 2016 the best QB out of that class was Prescott.
2018 QB class looks like ***.

Lynch has done a good job at trades and FA.

McClay is tied to only the draft to find talent. And it's next to impossible to nail the draft all the time. Especially when scouts want 1 player but coaches want another.

Their running game is good because they have 3 serviceable RBs in Breida, Coleman, and Mostert, that have been situationally game planned and rotated all season.
Agree with everything else you posted, but is a coaching and drafting philosophy which equates to build philosophy, is why SF has extended their season to where they are.
Ive been preaching this build philosophy with this very comparison all season, getting slammed...lol doesn't matter to me,, I will always evaluate on the eye test,, doesn't matter.
Hopefully, and I truly believe in my eyes,, we got the coaching somewhat in place now, not just because its new, but because its actually relevant.
Next step is our scouting dept, hopefully Mike has some influence there as well, we shall see.
This upcoming draft and offseason is pivotal, and if MM has the juice, and I truly believe he does, can turn this team in to a true contender next season.

Stop listening to archaic, stone age coaches and allowing them to overrule the scouts that spent all year studying players and putting together a draft board.

I posted in another thread, over in the draft zone. It will be interesting to see how MM & WM work together. Will MM have final say so over the positional coaches. As Garrett let Rod and them decide to pass on a real DT or as last year a S.
So will MM over rule some of this. Which indications to me is he will. Based on the fact he is choosing his own staff. So I assume his input will be much larger in the draft.

We wasted our Dak rookie contract window under Garrett.

Our only hope is McCarthy and the Packers identifying him as the problem and going to the NFC championship the following year doesn't give me a lot of confidence.

So what you're saying is that you would rather suck for 3-4 years to get to draft high and and then be good for a year, maybe 2 and then suck again for 3-4 to replenish, instead of being competitive year in and year out. The only year a Garrett team wasn't competing for a playoff spot was 2015. I rather enjoy watching the Cowboys win games, regardless of where it puts us in the draft.

I am saying when you KNOW you are out of it and you win a meaningless game or two that hurts draft position you don’t hurt your draft position to feel good for a day. It’s not that hard.

That doesn’t happen every year. But when you know you aren’t going to make the playoffs then lose from that point on. It’s not hard to figure out.

For instance the win against the Commanders cost us 5 draft spots in 7 rounds (35 draft positions). Is there ANYONE on this draft board that isn’t pretty sure that those 5 spots per round will cost us a player that would have taken instead of the player we actually draft? My guess would be 3-4 players minimum.

Solomon Thomas is a backup who plays fewer than half the team's snaps.

The run game is good b/c of Shanahan.

The 9ers have way less talent than the Cowboys.

I wonder how often they get away from there draft board during the draft.

That's good in theory or fan talk but coaches and players ARE NOT wired to care about draft positions or intentionally lose a game. In fact, most don't trust rookies that much anyway and to think they'll throw a game or games for one or two? The thinking is unrealistic on every level IMO.........

If that were true Cleveland and Cincinnati would be in the AFC championship game each year.

The fact is good drafting involves hitting just as much with your day 3 picks as your first round picks.

And just as importantly....good coaching! (see where I'm going with that comment?)

Wrong - we’ve drafted poorly in the first and second rounds about the past 3 drafts. Gregory, Hill, Charlton, etc. It catches up quick. Not just the actual guy picked but the guy you passed up to get the loser, see TJ Watt and Thornhill for just a couple.
