The problem is that they prefer to carry 3 TEs; although they've carried 4 some years.

The "2nd TE" in terms of snaps played needs to be a blocking TE.

Witten as a blocker:
  • In his prime, as compared to other starting TEs, he was a very good blocker.
  • In his prime as compared to blocking TEs, he would be an average blocker as best.
  • In 2019 as compared to other starting TEs, he was average to below average as a blocker.
  • In 2019 as compared to blocking TEs, he would have been terrible. Schultz was a better blocker than Witten.
In 2019 with Kellen Moore wanting to play Jarwin more and Garrett as always wanting to play Witten on all the snaps, they ended up with the blocking TE (Schultz) playing a minimum number of snaps. The lack of playing time for a blocking TE hurt the run game.

Sean Lee on the other hand plays a position where they carried 7 players the majority of the years since they went back to the 4-3 in 2013. Keeping Lee makes much more sense than keeping Witten.

Player/coach? Is this possible? In fact, has it ever been done in the NFL?

His drops toward the end of the season concerned me a lot.

It's a given that he'd be slow and immobile, but once his hands started failing, I got fed up.

I wouldn't mind having Witten play for one more year as a short yardage, 3rd down option, but I doubt he'd accept such a limited role.

People keep talking about moving on like we have a stable of great TEs available.

Truth is, despite all the hate he gets here, Witten doesnt need athleticism to find soft spots in short yardage zones. He can also still block.

Witten at his age is better than a whole lot of TE2s and TE3s in the league.

Y'all should play more sports, old man game is a thing and you dont underestimate it.

We need a young guy... a solid rookie plus Jarwin plus Witten isnt bad at all.
Yeah, it's pretty simple. If they can't find a young TE to beat Witten out, thats on them.

The only game that is a thing for Witten is a game of shuffle board in a mobile home retirement community down in Florida.

He sucks no matter how you try to spin it.

He doesnt suck as much as the booth, but he sucks.

Preach that.

Great conversation:

Witten: I want to come back and play for the Cowboys, start and play every snap.

MM: I would start working on your horseshoe game if you want to compete at something, because you won’t be playing with the Cowboys next year.

MM: Good talk.

Yeah that’s probably how you guys wish it went but I’m sure much more respect was given to him than that.

Wot in blazes?
Your thinking about holding on to the aged ("He can block ") exemplifies what has brought us to 8-8 land. Hang on to the underachievers. Operate a home for the aged and crippled.
Good luck with tha, matey!

His yards per catch was 4 yards lower than other TE’s with as many catches. He was on the only team that would have started him last year. His time was up probably 4 years ago. Its not like he’s playing for vet minimum either. Great career. Way past time to go.
