Does depth at wr in this year’s draft make Amari Cooper expendable?

Per Sportrac the Cowboys have nearly $74,000,000 in cap space.
Quit the hand wrining, the Cowboys can pay Dak whatever he wants and still pay Cooper and Jones, plus others. There are many players on the team who don't, and can't, demand huge salaries (NFL-wise, of course).

Jerry (or Stephen) learned their cap lessons several years ago, no team can pay everybody they want what the player demands, but the lower-echelon players aren't hard to replace.

Paying Dak isn't the problem with this team....
No matter how much you tell them they will ignore it. Cowboys can afford Dak and Amari and more.

Why do you guys always only ever focus on starters and not future depth? A good chunk of that $74 will be going to Dak. Heck, it's one of the main reasons we even have good cap space right now because Dak was on a rookie contract that already came cheap due to being a 4th rounder.

We can't justify paying all of them.

True, but there's a difference between a players average salary and his cap hit, there are signing bonuses spread out over several years, deferred compensation, end-loaded contracts, and so forth. You can't just add up several players "average" yearly salary and say there's not enough money to play them, and as well a team doesn't have the same 53 every year, players leave and take their salary with them a lot of the time.

Someone mentioned T. Crawford's contract, his dead cap for 2020 is $1.1 mil, the Cowboys could save $8 mi by releasing him before 6-1, so there's more money available if they need it.

The cap is so complicated it makes simple salary/year computation not tell the whole story.

Again, the Cowboys have plenty of money to sign big time contracts to a lot of players, and that's not even counting increases in the cap every year....

Would we end up signing Byron jones and letting Amari walk and draft wr?

It sucks because Zeke was the big offensive player we needed to let walk. Would suck to give up a WR like Cooper because of it. But you have to chince somewhere.

I would laugh my head off if we traded up and took Jerry Jeudy.

I seriously hope not, a first-round draft pick for a year-and-a-half rental, that's definitely a black eye on the front office if that happens.

I agree, and although he was an enigma last year, he still had almost 1200 yards, its not like he's Roy Williams.

Think about this scenario at that point:
  1. Wasted your 2017 1st rounder on Taco over TJ Watt with nothing to show for it
  2. Used your 2018 1st rounder on Vander Esch, with a questionable future due to neck issues
  3. Used your 2019 1st rounder on a rental that you're now going to let walk?
  4. Should I even mention that your 2019 2nd rounder looks like a complete bust?
  5. Or that your 2019 3rd rounder hasn't even had a real practice with the team yet?
It quickly dispels the talk about the Cowboys 'drafting well', doesn't it?

If we draft Henry Ruggs Jerry will have to decide on keeping Amari or Just saving the money to sign Gallup in a few years. I really want Ruggs to replace Cobb.

Not at all. Here’s a list of recent drafts. Looks pretty good to me. Also you don’t even talk about undrafted free agents which are also part of the draft.

No, a rookie WR won't make Amari Cooper expendable. It takes WRs longer than any one year to supplant one of the best WRs in the league. Amari Cooper is the best WR in the Cowboys lineup and figures to be a vital part of the offensive plans for Dallas. Replacing him with a rookie wouldn't be likely at all to serve them well -- not for 2020, at least. Yes, he'll be costly if signed. It happens, if and when a team wants to win. He'll likely be tagged, though.

I'd much rather get a dynamic tight end than resigning Amari or a Rd. 1 WR. Problem is those don't grow on trees.
