Romo is good but there's also a crop of QBs who will be retiring soon who could probably be just as good in the booth. If Brady ever decided to get into it, all the networks would be telling him to name his price. Similar to Peyton though, Brady could be content doing his own thing...they don't really need the gig.

Brady won't do it.

But I hear through the airwaves Phillip Rivers may be interested.

Being a good QB doesn't make you a good announcer. Listen to Dan Fouts, he's a Hall of Famer and he's garbage. Phil Simms won a Super Bowl and is trash tier. And Aikman is savagely mediocre as an announcer, sorry.

Brady can be very stilted when talking off the cuff. Peyton is good reading a script, but there's no evidence he can talk on the fly either. Romo has some rough spots but he's a rare combination of coming across as authentically excited to watch football and smart enough to get across what's going on.

$20m means absolutely nothing to ESPN. Their revenue is like $10 billion lol.

ESPN has been hemorrhaging millions of subscribers every year due to people cutting the cable cord. They have had to lay off hundreds of employees. I’m surprised they are going to offer Romo such a big contract given this situation.

Imagine being a world class competitive athlete your entire life. The constant training, practices, injuries, failures, and criticism. You dream of making it to the NFL. You dream of playing for a few years and maybe making a couple million. Then you do make it, and there are countless OTA's, mandatory camps, training camp, film study, and the rigors of getting hit by giant dudes week after week. You earn your millions through hard work and pain. Then your playing days are over and suddenly companies are fighting over you, and you're making more money than you did as an NFL starting QB! You get to stay involved in the NFL and talk to players every week, and there is no physical contact or any physical activity involved at all! You only work a few hours a day, 4-5 days a week, 5-6 months a year, and pretty much all NFL fans across America love you! What a gig! Romo has to be pinching himself, what a life. Good for Tony, he's earned every penny.

Holy great googly moogly!

At this rate, he's going to make more than Dak, not just Zeke.

Look, I love me some Romo, and he does make the games more fun to watch, but this is insane.

I don't tune in for broadcasters. Almost nobody does. If I hear Beth Mowins voice, I'm out, but otherwise, I'm generally OK with whomever is doing the game.

Why do you seem offended by Romo's wage? I love when workers get paid more.

They'll just fire more peasants to make it work.

Then pair Romo with the worst person possible and MNF will still be a trainwreck.

They made more money in 2018 than 2017.

They laid off employees b/c it was bloat, not because they are struggling.

Just like Dak, he's just riding the market and I don't blame him one bit.......
Free market
Not blaming Dak for getting what he can get, but these scenarios aren't at all the same.
No cap

ESPN is losing subscribers at the highest rate in their history. That’s is going to affect their bottom line. They can try to charge remaining customers more to keep their revenue up but that’s only going to accelerate the loss, which is what seems to be happening.

During Disney’s Q1 2020 earnings call last week ESPN reported that subscribers dropped 4.5% in Q1 2020. Previously, the loss was 4.0% in Q4 2019 and 2.5% in Q3 2019.

You just going to ignore the subscriber boost for ESPN+?

A 5% dip in cable subcribers doesn't really matter. Right in the article you linked: It must be noted that despite an acceleration in cord cutting and the “continued decline of the traditional cable business”, Disney’s cable networks (including ESPN) grew revenues by +20% in Q120.
