He averages 16yds/catch for his career. Throw out 2019 under Arians and he could be an interesting prospect for any team.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I would gladly take him for a 2nd or 3rd, he would be the top TE if he were put in this draft class. I just wonder how willing the Bucs are to unload him at a price Dallas would go for.

It is an odd situation considering how little the TE is used in Arian's scheme.

If the Cowboys bring Howard into a mix of TE's, I'm all for that.

If the Cowboys bring him in, and is the only real TE they bring in, and count on him being the potential starter next year, I'm completely against that.
If Howard is playing, he will be playing on a near elite level. The problem with him has been health. He is a much better TE that 2020 Witten and Jarwin when he is healthy.

Its his injury history that is reason I wouldnt give up more than a day 3 pick. Id be for adding him though. He is an inline TE, so he fits with Jarwin. If and when he is hurt, I think we can get by at the position with Jarwin and Shultz playing as the in line TE

and Howard is still quite a young buck,so I wonder why the Bucs have soured on him as such.

And I actually thought Howard would do more even under Dirk Koetter's which he seemed somewhat overshadowed by vet Cameron Brate.
and I do wonder how much was Bruce Arians' offense, ..and how much was it the starting QB Jamis Winston who other vertical players such as Desean Jackson have also had their receiving game struggles under Winston, for whatever reason.

The move is to just stick with Jarwin..

He’s shown enough potential and I think he does have some real upside that is being ignored right now.

If Jarwin was a 2nd round pick we wouldn’t even be having a debate about who our TE is next year because he has developed and even produced this year with old man Witten stealing snaps from him.

Crazy how we all wanted to get Jarwin more snaps during the season, now we're talking about getting a new TE to keep him locked in as TE2.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
TE O.J. Howard

He struggled throughout his first season in Bruce Arians' offense, which has been notorious for not getting the tight end involved vertically as much as Dirk Koetter's did. The Bucs did entertain offers for Howard before the trade deadline. Going to an offense that utilizes him differently might be what he needs to rejuvenate his career. -- Jenna Laine
He has stated that he tries to model his play off of Jason Witten, Jimmy Graham, and Jordan Reed.

Pre-draft measurables
6 ft 5 3⁄4 251 lb, 4.51 40yd., 4.16 short shuttle, 6.85 3-cone, 30" vert., 10 ft 1 Broad Jump, 22 reps 225lbs.

Most of all beside ability to catch and get deep....HE CAN BLOCK!!!!

His 3 cone which measures agility is comparable to Amari Cooper who is know for his quickness in and out of breaks. But, did I tell you....HE CAN BLOCK!!!

His 40yd time is comparable to Michael Gallup and he weighs 50lbs more than Gallup. But, did I tell you...HE CAN BLOCK!!!!

He was the Offensive MVP of Alabama's victory over Clemson in the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship after recording five receptions for 208 yards and two touchdowns. His next best performance of the season came in the National Championship rematch against Clemson. In the 35–31 loss, he had four receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown.

So he makes big time plays in big time games. But, did I tell you...HE CAN BLOCK!!!!!

I would like the Boys to trade for him. If he does well, resign. Maybe Tampa takes a 5th, conditional to a 4th.

TE is a vital position in the WCO
I mean, I went and looked at every single one of McCarthy's Green Bay Packers offenses and found that his TEs were almost always an afterthought in the offense behind at least 3 wide receivers.

His running backs were usually an afterthought in the passing game too, oddly enough. If you conjure up a mental image of the west coast offense where the TE is heavily showcased (compared to the rest of the league) and the RB is Roger Craig catching 70, 80, 90 balls... well, McCarthy didn't really do that in Green Bay ever.

Here's a year-by-year rundown on where the TE figured in the Packers' passing game during the McCarthy era...

2006: TE Bubba Franks was their top TE, finished 5th on the team in receiving yards with 200-something yards.
2007: TE Donald Lee finished 4th on the team with 500-something yards
2008: TE Lee finished 4th on the team with 303 yards.
2009: TE Jermichael Finley finished 3rd on the team with 600-something yards.
2010: TE Finley missed most of the season and only got 300 receiving yards. Still led the TEs in yards.
2011: TE Finley returns and gets 767 yards as the 3rd leading receiver. This is the high-water mark of TE production of McCarthy era.
2012: TE Finley is back to being only the 4th leading receiver with 600-something yards.
2013: TE Finley again misses most of the season and gets 300 yards. This time, a backup manages to outproduce him by a few yards.
2014: Finley is gone. Quarless and Rodgers, both backup types, finish 5th and 6th in receiving yardage.
2015: TE Richard Rodgers is their 3rd leading receiver with a measly 510 yards.
2016: TE Jared Cook is their 4th leading receiver with 377 yards.
2017: TE Martellus Bennett is their 6th leading receiver with 233 yards.
2018: TE Jimmy Graham is their 2nd leading receiver but with only 600-something yards. McCarthy was fired mid-season.

That's 12.5 seasons. With a prolific passer most of those years and an era in which TEs have become bigger weapons. And the absolute ceiling was a season where the TE cracked 700 yards one time. The TE finished 3rd in receiving yards only a few times. Much more common for the TE to finish 4th or worse. There was one 700 yard season and a few 600 yard seasons, and the rest were all worse than that.

Also, I think that list of names betrays how vital the TE position wasn't to his teams. They stumbled onto Finley with a 3rd rounder one year. And he was good (though he didn't have longevity and he retired still in his mid-20's). But apart from him, I see them content to roster a bunch of mediocre backup types. Or last-ditch lottery ticket free agent types with guys like Bennett or Graham who were shells of themselves and near the end. They treated the TE position more like we treat the safety positions, it seems to me.

I wanted us to draft him in 2017, if we don't trade for him I would like for us to draft Thaddeus Moss.

Id be pumped to pick up OJ. Arians doesnt use him and apparently isnt a big fan of his either. They have Godwin and Evans. They seem to prefer the TE block and even when they were running routes he utilized Brate more. OJ is an ELITE athlete whos rotting away in Florida. Would be a great pick up. The only question is at what costs?

Kinda sucks that the eagles got Goedert one pick ahead of us selecting BUST O-Lineman Connor Williams. Heck, even the next TE selected (Mark Andrews) turned out great. We can't evaluate tight ends, never mind that is not the problem (or is it?). We can't develop them, especially with Witten on the roster.

Andrews is a very good tight end, but he’s very similar to Jarwin.

Paying Howard $6m is way better than paying Witten $5m like we did last year.

Because he is nothing more than after-thought as TE2 to most defense. His blocking was the worst of the 3 TEs used. You make him a starter, he will go games with stat lines of 1 catch 15 yards. then have a game where he catch 6 for 107 and 2 TDs and then back to 1 catch for 15 yards for 4 games. He has only done well when he is 7th option on the field.

We were fine with Jarwin and rookies in 2018. Sign Jar back and get another rookie and let’s roll.
