Good. So long, Byron. We'll miss your every-other-year interception. Not to mention how you consistently tackle WRs after 15 yard completions!

When you draft well, these are the types of problems you will eventually have.
You have to decide with of your players you are going to pay and sometimes a few of the other good ones are going to move on for the money.

Now if you get Dak signed (don't start whining about it and turn this into yet another anti dak thread) than maybe you can decide between Amari and Byron on who can stay or who can be have certain tags slapped on them.

But if you don't put a tag on Byron than he will go out as a FA and we will not get any trade picks for him like some seem to suggest.

And if they decide to let him go...with the exception of them bring in a decent player in FA to replace him with (and with the tight purse strings under Stephen Jones, that is unlikely) you will probably wind up taking at least a couple of DBs in the first few rounds of the draft.

Not a single player from this defense is irreplaceable. Byron included. The defense was absolutely terrible. Turnovers drastically increase your chance for wins. I’ll take a rookie who can create turnovers on rookie contract over paying Byron 15million per year.

I'd like to have him back. Yes, he doesn't generate a ton of turnovers but he's been one of the 10 best CBs over the last two years when looking at completion percentages and passer ratings. I think people seriously underrated/undervalue how important that is because they are so obsessed with him not getting interceptions. That's a pretty silly way to judge a CB (some of the same people said the same thing about Ramsey coming out of college and all he did was become arguably the best CB in football).

But........... if he's going to be a hot commodity and get paid a ton, I think it would be wise to just let him walk.

3rd round comp pick, yeah I will take that. If they want him that bad to pay him that much for a 3rd.
We have Lewis and Awuzie still, sign Brown to a 2 year deal. Draft a CB.

:hammer:

Exactly where I'm at.

Let someone else overpay Byron Jones. And I'll 'get by' getting my 0 interceptions elsewhere. I'll pencil in Lewis and Awuzie as my starters today, and look to find an affordable free agent and then look to the draft. I can 'live' without paying Byron Jones $15 - $17 million a year to not be a playmaking difference-maker.

CBs are not that expensive compared to other positions. Jones will probably get somewhere around $15 million a year. Sounds like a lot but top WRs are getting closer to $20 million.

After the deals are done with Dak and maybe Cooper, the Cowboys will have committed somewhere around 65% of their cap to offense. Of the remaining 35%, Demarcus Lawrence accounts for 1/3 of that! So outside of Lawrence, 20% of the cap goes to defense. As of now. This could change if the Cowboys choose not to sign Cooper to a $20 million deal and sign say, Leonard Williams instead. But the imbalance between offense and defense is growing and will be especially painful if Lawrence does not return to his 2018 level.

If you guys are comfortable with Awuzie and Lewis being the #1 and #2 CBs on this team you're bat crazy - we'll get torched

If you're talking about paying $15 - $17 million a year so Bryon Jones can get 0 interceptions, and you can continue to lament your defense "not getting turnovers", you're insane.

Big physical corners who shut down WRs are at a premium.
I agree but, the fly in the ointment is that he doesn't travel - he doesn't shadow the other teams #1WR - he only plays one side of the field.
Now if he did travel and generally speaking shut down #1 WRs then yes MAYBE you sign him even without the INTs.

Thing is teams just match up their #1 with Chido...

Jets game - Robby Anderson vs Jones - 2/4 targets completed for 9 yards
vs Chido - 4/5 targets completed for 118 yards.

New Orleans - Michael Thomas vs Jones 3/4 for 29 yards
Chido 8/10 for 65 yards (notice how much more they targeted Chido)

Signing Jones to a high priced contract would be like buying a Lamborghini and driving it on the streets of Manhattan, instead of the Autobahn.

regardless the outcome, losing Byron will hurt the cowboys. by stating their intentions to pursue him vociferously, the broncos are psychologically working on his psyche insofar as Byron taking a cowboy friendly deal by letting him know there are suitors out there who will make him richer. shrewd negotiating ploy by Denver.

Lmao dude there will 100% be someone brought in if BJ leaves. Whether via FA or the draft. I’d take aqib talib on a 2 year deal and draft CB’s in the next 2 years. Easy transition

unless there is significant improvement on our d-line and lb play this year, our d-backs will continue to be the toast of the nfl. seems many are as dismissive of Byron as they were of la'el Collins. losing him will hurt.

Or teams are 'letting their intentions' be known early to get the Cowboys to panic and do something stupid and overpay a player not worth it?

I'm going with that one because otherwise, there's zero gained by showing your hand before free agency can even begin.

But you will get a 3rd or 4th round comp pick next year for letting Jones go, depending on the size of the contract someone else pays him.

You ultimately just answered your own questions and came to the same conclusions as the rest of us.

He's good but not worth the big money.
