The problem is that the FT only delays and worsens the problem. QB salaries have jumped drastically every year for the past 4 or so years. You tag Dak, and next year you have the same problem; do you release him, or do you pay him an even bigger contract than he wants now.

FTs also destroy any goodwill between the team and player. Best case, Dak hardballs the Cowboys and demands the $40M/yr deal he had never asked for prior. At worst, he holds out and ends our 2020 season before it even begins.

or ... we tag him and get 2 first round picks ., get a rookie worth 625k in the first spot (if we trade all our 1s draft picks to get him .)

Then boom ... we got ourselves the best QB of the draft for 600k or 3M or whatever the rookie deal would be.

1) Tag him non-exclusive.
2) He gets to negotiate with any team(s) he wants.
3) If he signs a tender with another team we have the option of
a) matching the offer
b) accepting 2 #1s from the signing team

Them the rules.
got it.
and we're in agreement...Dak doesnt suck.

If you franchise him and he decides to not show up until week 1 (which he technically is well within his rights to do as he is not under contract until he signs it), then you basically had no offseason program because any changes you were making on offense are not happening when you do not have the QB and have no reps happening. You basically tank the first half of the season and then by the second half Dak will look better so his value wont go down but the season will be lost. QB tags do not provide as much leverage as any other position because you cannot run an offseason or training camp program, especially under a new coach, without the QB.

i know im not smart....so let me understand this...based on what i'm reading Dak sucks,he aint gonna get us a super bowl and we need ANYBODY but him....but we're the only ones who see that Dak sucks.

so we tag him....to trade him for multiple picks because all other 31 teams dont know he sucks....so we'll get a u'haul of picks for him and draft a rookie QB in the 1st Rd and will win us that 6th super bowl.

did i miss something.....

other than Dak doesnt suck...is worth keeping and has a better chance of being the guy who gets us that 6th ring than this magical, unnamed QB who is just sitting there...waiting for us to pluck'm.

The scale of love and hate:
Love being under $30mil per year and hate being $40mil per year.
dont get me wrong...i dont wanna pay that much either....but its how the mop flops.
you get a young QB for cheap...watch'm grow....guess what....its expensive.
always been that way...always will be.

It's not about Dak sucking or not ... its about the 40M punch to the cap .

Not really about dak, and more about cap management and the team we can build.

A 40M salary for the QB will leave us little room to make a good team . Even a 30M lowers our chances significantly.

I hear ya.
I wish he'd kept with what he implied early last season.
It sounded like he didn't expect to be paid as the top guy.
Pretty sure he's going to get that $36-$38mil per year.
I wish he signed at $33mil per year.

Rules is rules...

A "non-exclusive" franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five cap hits at the player's position for the previous five years applied to the current salary cap, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. A non-exclusive franchise player may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if the player signs an offer sheet from another team, the original team has a right to match the terms of that offer, or if it does not match the offer and thus loses the player, is entitled to receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

So if the cap is $200 million we only have to offer $27 million. If he finds a team willing to pay more, we can match or pass and take the two picks.
you still need a team willing to pay Dak what he wants and be willing to give up 2 1st rounders, aint gonna happen!

I made the case for Matthew Stafford as a possibility and if Det decides to go with Tua I believe it would be a great move to trade for Stafford but only a smart f.o. would make that move. Feels like a Patriots or Saints maneuver.

I would not cave to Dak. I would tag him with the non-exclusive tag and offer him 4 options.
1. sign the tag and play for 27 mil
2. Sign a long term deal at 30 mil per
3. Sign the tag and find a team willing to trade for you.
4. Don't sign the tag and play in the XFL

He would either realize that 30 mil per plus the endorsement opps that come with being the QB for Americas team is a pretty good life or feel disrespected and find a team willing to pay him what he wants and pony up the picks.

So what happens if he finds another team?

This is where QB option no 2 comes in. Derek Carr!

Why would the Raiders do it?
Brady to Raiders is one of the hottest rumors around.
Their f.o is infatuated with Brady
moving to Las Vegas and want to establish a fan base.

Why would Dallas do it?
gain 2 1st rd picks
get a franchise QB at about half the price.
3 years left on a very affordable contract.
Would be able to keep and sign plenty of F.A's.

Carr threw for over 4000 yards last year with a completion percentage over 70% and a very good td to interception ratio. Had inferior receivers. I would rank him a notch below Dak but at half price a better option.
Just give it up Troll. How many “I hate Dak threads” are you going to create? Insanity.

If Dak is as good as some here claim to be then 2 firsts is what we should be able to get somewhat easily. Funny how there are crickets after that...
The problem? Lining up his replacement gives him crazy-huge leverage.

Derek Carr's salary is about 20M this year. Dak's people threaten to sign the tag, giving us a $27M backup and ballooning our QB payroll this year up near $50M, and we're faced with the choice of letting him skate onto the open market without getting anything in return. The alternative is setting ourselves on fire financially for spite.

This is how Nick Foles got to walk right into free agency when his value was sky-high and the Eagles could've been able to get top picks for him. Because the threat of him signing the tag made it unthinkable to tag him at that point.

If we wanted to tag and trade Dak without him having the leverage to call our bluff and force his way directly into free agency, we'd have to do it without a replacement lined up.

Funny thing about all the people pretending their irrational hatred for Dak all this time was only about him not being good enough and not being able to get over the hump and win big. And pretending it was because Dak was too much of a bus-driver who plays it safe and nickels-and-dimes. And yet look how quick they all are to tell us to go get in bed with absolute proven losers like Carr and Keenum. Absolute nickel-and-dimer types with lower Yards per Attempt. Curious, that.

They throw all those football reasons out the window in a heartbeat so long as they can rid themselves of the guy they hate. It's almost as if the hate was inspired all along by some arbitrary, non-football, cosmetic trait about Dak that we can't quite put our finger on. Hmm. What an unsolvable puzzle that we'll never be able to get to the bottom of, right?

None of that is going to happen.

You wouldn't sign a $20 million Derek Carr if you use the non exclusive tag.
If you use the transition tag then you sign the high dollar guy and let Dak get what he can.

With the non-exclusive you sign a cheap guy who could run the offense, guys you want for a backup anyway....Case Keenum, Chase Daniel, maybe Mariota, even Dalton might be possible.

Right now, there are more possible starting QBs out there than there are starting jobs. (You may not like them but that doesn't mean they can't be a short term solution.)

Let Dak figure it out. Once his money stream slows, and bread ain't getting any butter, and mama is screaming he ain't doing nothing to help things, he'll get it in gear.

Jerry just ain't any good at playing Chicken! I'd get Dak at $33 million or less, or I'd take the picks.
