If Dak's negotiations sour?

Drafting a QB is a complete crap shoot. Just ask Denver.

Even high draft picks can play poorly, look at Mayfield and Trubisky.

Dak has all the leverage since it will be next to impossible to quickly get another QB as good as he is.

Agreed, although I do like Mayfield. But any threads or posts of the front office playing hardball with Dak is just a poster's hopes against the inevitable big pay day for a player just like back with the Zeke situation. If Dak's camp is serious about a holdout, they have mucho leverage just like Zeke did. How'd Zeke's situation turn out for him financially?

It’s possible.

If the cowboys FO did decide to move on from Dak. I would much rather they draft a first round QB than look to pick up a cast off QB

Drafting a QB comes with risks thought. People need to recognize that. Everyone pulling for the cowboys to draft a QB. That’s all well and good, but There’s a FAR greater chance that a QB they draft ends up being worse than Dak, than the QB being the next Mahomes.

that’s just the reality.

If the cowboys choose to take that risk. That’s fine. But it’s a risk.

Too big a risk to take when we're "oh so close" yet again. Same thing I think they were thinking with Zeke last year rather than trusting the reins to Pollard. It'd be even more dire with a QB like you've rightly stated, IMO. Not only that but using a 1st to take a QB takes away from the blue chip defensive draft talent needed unless you're going shopping in free agency.

Dak would feel like a fool if we drafted another QB with his skills in the 4th round and then he held out of training camp. That new QB would lead us to the SB and Dak would be riding the pine with no hopes of a deal like he could have had from the Cowboys. I bet he's already thought of that which is why he won't hold out.

Anybody saying, "No we can't make a change" is a Jason Garrett fan!
You're playing conservative. Fourth and inches and you won't go for it.

What we know QBs drafted since 2016:
Kansas City Chiefs – Patrick Mahomes (2017) * SB
Baltimore Ravens – Lamar Jackson (2018) *
Houston Texans – Deshaun Watson (2018) *
Philadelphia Eagles – Carson Wentz (2016) * SB
Arizona Cardinals – Kyler Murray (2019)
Los Angeles Rams – Jared Goff (2016) SB
Cleveland Browns – Baker Mayfield (2018)
New York Jets – Sam Darnold (2018)
Buffalo Bills – Josh Allen (2018) *
New York Giants – Daniel Jones (2019)
Dallas Cowboys – Dak Prescott (2016)
Denver Broncos – Drew Lock (2019)
Chicago Bears – Mitchell Trubisky (2017)
Indianapolis Colts – Jacoby Brissett (2016)
What we think we know:
Cincinnati Bengals – Joe Burrow (2020)
Miami Dolphins – Tua Tagovailoa (2020)

QBs drafted prior to 2016:
Minnesota Vikings – Kirk Cousins (2012) *
San Francisco 49ers – Jimmy Garoppolo (2014) * SB
Atlanta Falcons – Matt Ryan (2008)
Detroit Lions – Matthew Stafford (2009)
Green Bay Packers – Aaron Rodgers (2005) *
Seattle Seahawks – Russell Wilson (2012) *
New Orleans Saints – Drew Brees (2001) *
Carolina Panthers – Cam Newton (2011)
Tennessee Titans – Ryan Tannehill (2012) *
Jacksonville Jaguars – Nick Foles (2012)/Gardiner Minshew (2019)
Pittsburgh Steelers – Ben Roethlisberger (2004)
New England Patriots - Tom Brady (2001) * (3)SB

9 of the QBs who made the play-offs this year have been drafted, this decade, later than 2012, and 5 of those were drafted in the last 4 years. Three of those went to a Super Bowl (4 drafted since 2014 have been to a Super Bowl).

16 of the starting QBs in 2020 have been drafted since 2016. That HALF the league!

Anybody who thinks we shouldn't roll the dice just go ahead and wear them scaredy pants. But don't be complaining next time we're facing 4th and inches and we don't go for it. Just be like your idol Jason Garrett and say, "It's a long 4th and inches."

Source is glinnerman. Lol. Just a hunch bro. I think the deal was close except the length. Around 35 million a year.

1000%.......I honestly think actual money is either done are very close. Hell, just look at the deals behind and ahead of his projected value. The separation is only what $2-4M give or take? As you said, this thing is down to guarantee and structure. In fact, I'm willing a bet a red penny, Stephen could close this in less than 24 hours IF HE WANTED TO.

Yup I'll second that. We are being held up by length of contract. Dak wants a shorter deal so he can cash in a second time. Hes got a ton of self confidence, you have to give him that. I would think the smart play would be to take the most guaranteed money period. Dak thinks hes good enough to get paid even more next time around.

I’m betting we don’t draft one
Our first 3 picks have to be atleast major contributors with a couple day one starters
With the depth at WR I could see a WR in top 4 rnds
That means no legitimate QB option to draft
If we do get a comp there is a way to get day one starters at the end of this draft
Take a kicker and punter late
You could, if you really hit on top 3, have 5 players out of this draft playing day one atleast as a major contributor
That’s an amazing draft

The 4 year experiment should be over. We got him cheap and it’s served it’s purpose...whatever that was! Let’s move on and build a real SB contender with a real NFL QB. So what if it takes MM 2-3 years. We’ve already waited 25+ years on JJ’s insanity.

Here's something you may know ( but should )......within the next 2-3 years, over half of our current starters, both offense and defense, will either not be on the team or on expiring contracts. We don't have 2-3 years of experimenting with an unknown QB. Our window is NOW......

It was 40 wins. 2nd most in the league.

No Super Bowl of course, which is all that matters, but Dak played well in all 3 of his playoff games so can’t blame him too much for that.

Sadly, Jerry has no plan B .

Dak can ask for any amount , any amount . He can hold out for 40M and Jerry will fold .

It won’t happen in the next 2-3 years with the current roster. No matter who the coach is.

It’s done. He is getting a 4 year deal with 3 year out or opportunity for extension. That’s when it gets nasty. Especially if he helps us to the playoffs or SB. He will want 50 million a year after the new CBA.

I don't doubt that. You have to think that the structure has been agreed to but the final dollars will be set once they see if any new deals hit this offseason that increase the overall dollars.

IMO it will be a copy of the situation with Dez Bryant. They tagged him to buy time and then matched exactly the comparable contract to Demaryius Thomas.

You left a lot of QB’s off the list of those drafted prior to 2016. A lot of whom have sucked.

IF they sour? I think they did that after agreeing to a contract then backing out saying he wants more............ THAT's the type of character we're dealing with..........and I would never have thought this before.

A whole 4! The list was made for a different purpose, so those 4 were separate from the others. But here you go.....

Chargers - Phillip Rivers (2005)
Raiders - Derek Carr (2014)
Buccaneers - Jameis Winston (2015)
Commanders - Dwayne Haskins (2019)

Doesn't change who made the play-offs or the SB, but it does change the count on how many have been drafted this decade and in the last 4 years.

Would not have bothered me one bit had you taken the initiative to add them yourself. Feel free to do that in the future. Thanks!

DAK ABSOLUTELY is the QB of our immediate future no matter how many threads get made speculating this or that. Even if negotiating gets chippy like with Zeke - it WILL get done. Unless he has a career ending injury.
