If they are going to take a safety then take McKinney. The Cowboys have enough problems with tackling in their secondary, why compound it with a guy like Delpit. If they can tolerate a safety who can;t tackle then stick with Heath.

I'd much rather draft Antoine Winfield Jr. in the 2nd round.
By the time it is all said and done, Winfield might be worth that 18th pick. He is exactly the kind of playmaker/pacesetter that is needed.

He looks small with not much top speed but he’s got instincts and is a playmaker.

I’d love him in round 2.. Round 1 seems rich.

Will he get chosen in the first? Probably not. But at the end of it all, he could be one of the best pound for pound football players coming out of this draft.

Every year, there are players that get taken in the 2nd simply because they are not "worthy" of the first. And they end up being cornerstones more often than the touted ones in the opening round. It happens in every draft.

He is not a tackler ,he tries to hit people to stop them, this will not work in the NFl and guys will just bounce off him.

Not good, but his coverage stats are the opposite in a good way.

I'm a Delpit fan but I do get the concerns. My thing on him is he has traits you can't teach and coach and weaknesses you can. Length, athleticism, quickness and instincts aren't coachable. He'd come in day 1 and be the best coverage safety we have and be able to give us snaps as a nickel/dime CB.

He's kind of like a bigger, longer, more athletic version of Woods that can cover better.

Yep..

Tackling is mostly effort.

His coverage abilities are rare.. You draft him and figure it out later. I don’t see it as a big deal.

I don’t want any of these safeties at 17 though.. In a trade back sure.

I like Winfield...but wouldn’t be surprised if he checks in around 5’9 at the combine. If so, he’ll get murdered by quality TEs.

if you could tell me we could trade down, add a 3rd, and still get McKinney? In.

If you have tackling issues due to effort it’s not suddenly going to resolve itself in the NFL.

Gerod Holliman won the Thorpe award in 2014 with 14 INTs and was named a consensus All-American.

He was also the single worst tackler I’ve ever seen; zero effort.

That didn’t improve.

He was out of the league after a year.

Safeties have to be strong tacklers, as they are the last line of defense. This trait is a must for the position over everything else. Next trait, is football instincts. We always hear the term always around the football regarding the position. The Safety position, is kind of like linebacker, players need to read and react quickly.

So how does Delpit end up w a first round grade and Winfield w a second?

Watch and see if Winfield comes off the board first, and if he isnt closer to 17 when all is said and done.

Furthermore on Delpit....even if this can be explained or reasoned with or whatever....

He CANNOT be the pick at 17 if theres as much as this much of a question.

Was listening to the Trust the Tape podcast and Jeff Cavanaugh cited some statistics regarding Delpit’s missed tackle percentages.

He mentioned Delpit missed 20% of his tackles in 2018 and 24% in 2019.

I can’t find the source of his stats but did find this PFF article from back in early Nov. 2019 just before the Bama/LSU game: “He (Delpit) has missed 13 of his 54 total tackle attempts [...]”

That equates to 24% which coincides with Cavanaugh’s number.

Either way, missing 20-24% of your tackle attempts over two seasons is HORRENDOUS.

Can anyone post this tackle attempt per entages for Xavier McKinney ?

He allowed nine receptions in his coverage all season. On 17 targets, he had six combined picks and pass breakups.
Are you combining last 2 years because he had one interception this year. And his stats of course fail to mention plays like the first play from scrimmage vs Georgia where if Jake Fromm was an actual quarterback Delpit gets burned for a 70 yard td. If people want him at 17 fine but I'm not buying some rare special player.

This is pulled from PFF, could be. If so, the amount of targets should be fairly telling on the ball not going in his direction.

You can knock the tackling all you want, but dude is above average in coverage and basically every scouting report out there will confirm.
