Cole Kmet reminds me of a young Witten

Been a pet cat of mine since before the past college football season. Would be a great addition. Only concern has been a tendency to get nicked up (broken collarbone, two high ankle sprains).

I think we need a vet TE to compliment Jarwin.

If a nice TE falls to the 3rd or 4th that could work as well, but I cant see spending a high pick on a TE when this defense needs serious attention.

It's going to be fun to watch him at the Combine, Like I wrote previously, I think he's actually a pretty good athlete, and testing somewhere in the Tyler Eifert range wouldn't surprise me. I guarantee you, if he ends up with a spider chart like this, he's going to start getting a lot more talk in about three weeks.

The bad thing is that the Combine does a very poor job of testing strength (both upper body and lower body), and Kmet seems to seriously lack that. It won't show up in his drill numbers, but let the buyer beware.

to me TE is a key position on offense and is a critical safety valve for any QB

I want a difference maker at TE not an average starter

I dont care if it is FA or draft, we need a number 1 TE
Both superbowl teams had great TEs, if you also look at NE with Gronk and Philly with Ertz you can see TE could really open up this offense. Plus getting a defense to worry about receivers and TEs will open it up for Zeke and Pollard.

I don’t like any of these TEs in this class over Jarwin.

If we’re going to upgrade I’d do it in FA.
Agreed.

I'm really hoping the money it would cost to sign Cooper goes to a guy like Henry or Hooper and a defensive player.

Feature two tight ends and the running game. Play better defense. Play keep away.

I dont want them to use a top 3 pick on a te. But if they did it needs to be the right tight end for a change.

Yeah I know what you mean but we are kind of stuck.

His contract is up. They can let him go or pay him.

Either way, is it not best to play to his strengths?

Are we going to try to turn Prescott into a prolific pocket passer because he is paid that way? That wont work. Any capable starter not on a rookie contract is going to approach 30 million anyway.

But yeah...the idea of "playing keep away" is a testament to the defense being not so great, and absolutely worked for this team in 2016, then it was abandoned. Still not sure why.

Dak was pretty much the most prolific pocket passer in the league last year. The 2016 strategy was abandoned b/c it stopped working.

This is exactly why Kmet shouldn't even be an option early. He's just not explosive enough to be anything but a chain mover.

I'm not sure we are looking for a TE like Witten, he has incredible, intangibles and work ethic. But is the NFL trending more towards TEs like Zach Earts, Travis Kelce, Darren Waller, etc.?

Perhaps the team targets more of a H-Back, one who can play some FB, some TE. We know MM likes to use a FB within his WC Scheme. Hunter Bryant is that type of player from Washington. Not sure of his range, but more likely a late day 2 prospect.

Injury prone but a good player. I don't want any more injury prone players. So I'll pass.
In FA there are several I would look at.

Ebron is the best bet to be able to help immediately.

I would not invest in TE in 2020. Jarwin can play and we can see what he can do.

Dalton Schultz needs to play as is typical with our old coaches, they liked to bench TEs as long as Witten played.

It's also after the draft, more TE FAs may pop up.

I see shades of Witten in Kmet both good and bad.

A large part of Witten’s greatness was based on durability and the ability to play three downs. That said, he wasn’t some dynamic playmaking tight end in the passing game. Yeah, he racked up yards in the first half of his career, but he was never a red zone threat or a guy that could flip the field with YAC ability.

I think folks would also be mistaken to assume he’s some sorta complete TE. He is not a great blocker. You can watch his game cut up and see his handiwork as a blocker.

I think Kmet is a much more intriguing prospect than Schultz but not that dissimilar. I certainly don’t see him as a Kelce or Kittle type.

I think he’s a solid 2nd-3rd prospect.

My guess is he goes mid to late 2nd round, maybe early third. Would I use our 2 on him? Depends. A lot would have to depend on what we did in FA and with that first pick.

In other words, if we went WR in the first, I'd be hard pressed to go TE in the 2nd, even considering I tend to be a BPA guy.
