Why would Dallas be talking on releasing one of the best in the league Jones (due to two other big contracts in Dak & Coop), only to pick up another for a few million less? How's that saving them any money?!o_O

They can't afford to keep him.

I mean they technically can but the cost might be too high. If the cap hit for Dak is around 30m next year (which if he signed a 36-37m AAV contract it could easily be), and its around 15m for Coop (similar logic), then you have enough to get Jones on a 13m cap hit, but that basically ends your free agency right there as I believe that leaves you with about 19m left in cap dollars and you need around 8m to sick draft picks.

There's more to great CB play than interceptions.

It makes zero sense to let Jones walk, trade away a high pick or a player for Slay and then have to pay a 30 year old a big, long term contract for a CB.

Slay was an first team All pro, and a 3 time pro bowl player, -that's more than just INTs, .. teams want difference making coverage and difference making INTs turnovers that can instantly change field position and the momentum of the game. But how difficult is it to get a hold of that kind of core player.

Imo, Cowboys not likely to trade for Slay because they (Stephen) seems to aim more for youth movement, than feel a need to add that one middle ground piece (even if he's age 30) to what they feel
is a Super bowl core. I used to think that with the Earl Thomas pursuit, but Stephen proved me wrong.

Except, of instances like Bennett and Quinn..iirc which Dallas gave a couple of 6's for.

It's all about that value, giving up a 2nd and 10m+ to a 30 year old CB doesn't seem like a fair trade-off..in terms of said value.

Would you trade for him and what would you give up in return?

He will make 10 million next year and will then need to be resigned.

I’ll give em Garrett

Oh wait, already gave that disease to the Giants

He wants a contract extension now. So we’d be letting Byron walk and signing Slay for just as much/if not more, plus giving the lions compensation. Not the best business strategy...
Couldn’t have said it better

We didn’t give them anything they took him.

when you’re talking about Leprosy it’s a matter of semantics, did we ‘give’ it to them or did they ‘take’ it

In either case, Giants have it and we don’t

If the rumors are true, Lions are looking for a 2nd, at least. I wouldn't give up either for Slay.

Well, I take that back............... I want out from Elliott's contract. So I'd trade Elliott and not even bother to consider resigning Slay at this point.

I am just against paying CBs elite money.

CB's elite money? Why not? I would gladly get rid of Zeke for Slay straight up. Would even give them a 4th or something. Slay would be paid 10 million in 2020 and then yah we would have to pay him big money. But he would be getting paid around the same amount as the Zeke contract. So you are actually doing a swap one for the other. And this allows you to definitely let Jones walk. Now you can focus the draft and FA on DT, and safety, and the rest of the defense.

Slay is both a better cover guy and is a play maker. He is better at everything than Jones.

And no it doesnt make sense to give up a high pick. But if you could trade Zeke and his contract and acquire Slay it makes all the sense in the world.

How incredible is it that not only did Garrett get tossed, he was hired to run the offense of the Giants? LOL

I was worried with Barkley and that good young QB over there. Not anymore. Garrett will find a way to ruin their careers.

I eoukd

only trade for slay if they would take a player like zeke. Then maybe a 3rd rounder.

slay is much better. Actually makes interceptions.

Slay wants the brinks truck though...15 mil or more according to him.
Good player, actually makes INTs but we can’t afford him if we are paying Dak.

just wait..let them release him. I don't think they can get more than a 3rd rounder for him. He's 29...so the only way I trade for him would be a conditional 5th that could turn into a 3rd in 2021. Not giving up any draft picks in this deep draft in 2020

If not resigning Byron Jones, Darius Slay will be a release by the lions and you can get him in free agency.

Poor Lion fans...their front office just doesn't get it. They have the chance to have one of the best tandems in the league by drafting Okudah...yet...they don't want to pay Slay 10 million. Dumb...just dumb

Yes, you’re right, as those two were true exceptions low risk/high reward exceptions – vs facing giving up a likely high pick for another 30+ year Earl Thomas.

- But Quinn also had health questions coming over from Dolphins – with the recurring back issues that limited him down to an average player at the end tail of his Rams days, and into his Dolphins en route to the trade.

- Bennett showed he had still something left in his Philly days and ‘philosophical “ differences saw him off the Pats so he could be a big nickel rusher here. Especially with the loss of Crawford, and not getting enough production from others on the DL.

These guys ended up being one year rental/prove its where one struck gold,.. while the other seem to fade down the stretch.

But here's a big critical question we still face with the Cowboys, are we likely to commit on a longer term contract (3 years?) to a 30 year Robert Quinn ?
(and what’s likely to be his final NFL contract)

Yeah I don't want to trade picks, though I do believe Slay is a better corner than Jones.
