Should we be worried about our big contracts in 2020?

This has been nagging in my brain since we entered the off-season..

Name the two things these 3 playes have in common..

Jaylon
Zeke
Tank

?

They are all key players.

They all have big salaries.

They all had big falloff after receiving their new deals.

Should this worry us with..

Amari
Dak
Byron Jones

..signing new deals? (I think Jones is signable and needed in a rebuilding year).

And additionally, all 3 want long-term deals with upfront guaranteed money.

If two instead receive Tags, and the 3rd gets a contract..

is that going to diminish their play?

To me in looking at Kirk Cousins, he received a 2nd Tag after his first one. Although he got paid by the Vikes, he really did not elevate his game once playing in Minny.

In fact the Vikes made the playoffs with Cousins his first two years there, but there were alot of grumblings about his cap vs his wins post-season.

And with this being a heavy rebuilding year, can we afford anymore falloff of our top players with so much changing?

If Jaylon, Tank, Zeke, Dak, Amari and Jones all step step back in 2020, what then?

I do not want to make this another Dak thread..so let's make it a performance vs.contract thread.

(Aimed at Dak of course..haha)

Comments welcome.

Not worried at all. I have no control over it and I don't believe the guys Jerry's paying are championship caliber.

He's investing in hope, again. I expect similar results.

Jaylon is due 8mil option bonus and looks broken to me.
Zeke is due 13mil option bonus and held out. Wave bye bye and roll with Pollard and a draft pick.

Tank - we already dropped 25 mil signing bonus on. He's not playing up to his contract, but maybe his contract going forward.

We'll be cutting some of our overpaid free agents, of which there are many.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's not nearly the problem that it might seem.

Worried? No.
Weary? Yes.

I big contract to a horrible leads to dead money when he gets cut. So I'm weary but not worried.

Is that a serious question?

Restructures, cut Crawford....it's easy to come up with more than $15M if you want.

Thanks! That's a better plan than just saying we got all the money we need to sign these guys!

(Yeah, it was sort of a half hearted to get these people who think we have all this money to sign everybody thinking!)

Uh, you do realize that 77 is not all paid this year?

Removed the signing bonuses from that figure, as it is spread out over the length of the contract on an average for the salary cap hit.
Also that will be the average yearly not the real yearly. After removed say 20% for the signing bonus, which is just a wild guess at the %.
Then the 1st year pay could only be 5 million for Dak, but he got a huge signing bonus of say $30 million. A 5 year contract, so $6 million a year toward the cap, so he only counts $11 million this year.

But Dak pockets $30 million plus the $5 million in weekly game checks.

I've always leaned toward only worrying about the things that I can act upon. The Cowboys' financial budget is Stephen's worry to deal with as he sees fit, with Jerry overseeing things, as well. I like that idea and am totally willing to limit myself to being a spectator. No pressure from this side of things! ;)

Right.
I never get concerned over that either, as things always have a way to work itself out. And does no good to stress out over it.

Me too.

We all want to believe that axing Garrett is an answer in its self..

but I guess that the hiring of McCarthy and staff is the big thing for us for now.

The next is signing Dak then Amari.

The rest of the roster I think gets their contracts ended and the new staff signs all new players for the roster.

Simple.

Having NFL contracts that aren't fully guaranteed ensures that the game will remain closer to a meritocracy, with the best players getting the most money and earning the playing time.

It's better for the players who are contributing to get paid. Fully guaranteed contracts could keep that from happening.
