I saw Joker...i probably give it a 7/10.

It was okay but man i didn't expect the Academy to give it so much love. I guess it's one of those Leonardo Dicaprio moments in where they are finally going to give Phoenix an Oscar.
I am kinda 50/50 on the nominations. In my opinion, it does not deserve nominations for:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director
  • Best Original Music Score
  • Best Makeup and Hairstyling
  • Best Sound Editing

...but I do think it deserves the nod for:

  • Best Actor
  • Best Adapted Screenplay
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Sound Mixing
  • Best Costume Design
  • Best Film Editing

Dr. Sleep. 7 of 10. Good not great.

Loved Rebecca Ferguson as Rose the Hat. Like an evil version of 1970's Stevie Nicks

Ferguson is underrated.

Marriage Story, 7.5/10, good acting.

Shot Caller, 8/10, stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and he does a great job. It's one of those life questions like Breaking Bad proposed when he's sent to prison faced with surviving, how far would you go?

Joker on Amazon Prime 6/10
It was okay, I didn't like how weak he was before the transformation but liked the ending twist explaining his upbringing. They should've dove more into his thinking process before and after...you never really get a good glimpse of what's going on in his head..does like anarchy due to his place in the world, or is he sadistic, etc.

I loved Shot Caller..good depiction of state prisons and his falling in with the "brotherhood" (almost by default, etc.) but loose enough to make it interesting.

I watched two Oscar Nominated shows this weekend . The Marriage Story on Netflix and Parasite on demand. Both were good. I love actor driven movies over action movies any day of the week and I though Driver, Johanssen, Laura Dern, and Ray Liotta were great in the Marriage Story. Laura Dern especially was great. She has been aweseom this year on her role in this movie and Pretty Little Lies. The movie itself was kind of slow but the actors nailed it. It reminded me of my divorce over 30 years ago. "Oh we can get through this and be civil, and do what is best for the kids."Then, Bam, blindsided when she gets an attorney and war is on.

Parasite was also very good. The ending was not what you would expect. The move is in Japanese/Korean so there are subtitles. I dont have a proble with subtitles as I usually have closed caption on due to old hearing . The writing was very good, story is great, and the actors did a great job. Both movies are deserving.

Tolkien - HBO. 9/10 If you are a fan of his writing, this is excellent and gives the background for what influenced him to create Middle Earth and gives you a glimpse of the images in real life that led him to his fantasy world.

5.75 out of 10.00

My 'Oy Vey' List
  • The Huntress - humorless character played almost stiff as a board
  • Detective Montoya - almost pure cliché cop role
  • Zsasz - not psychotic enough
  • Black Mask - sometimes too psychotic
  • Too many unnecessary flashbacks
  • Cartoony backgrounds
My 'I Was Pleasantly Surprised' List
  • Cassandra Cain - I thought the character would not fit the movie but was pleasantly surprised how she was used
  • Brief spot acting was done pretty well by various minor characters

My 'Still Glad I Bought A Ticket' List

  • Fight Scenes - pretty well choreographed in my opinion/enjoyed every single one
  • Black Canary - could have been done better but Smollett-Bell holds her own within the framework of the movie
  • Harley Quinn - Robbie remains the BEST actress who could play the character extremely well/Birds Of Prey would have easily been a 4.00 or even lower if someone else played the part

That's a shame. The premise held some promise.

Got in an older flicks mood, particularly comedies and specifically Jack Lemmon films.

It had been awhile since I had watched them and had to order some for the library and every time I watch any Neil Simon ones, they just get funnier. There are some killer lines delivered in such a manner that is unique to his writing style.

The Odd Couple - 8/10 and the best lines are given to the poker guys "I saw milk standing in there and it wasn't in a bottle" was a standout.

Some Like It Hot - 9/10 Jack Lemmon's facial expressions are among the best ever done in any film.

The Out of Towners - 9/10 As was his acting style, he loved to play off funny lines delivered be his female costar and Sandy Dennis was absolutely perfect in her role.

The Prisoner of Second Avenue - 9/10 See above only this costar was Anne Bancroft and just as perfect and her delivery and portrayal could not have been played close to her's by any other actress.

The best thing about older movie collections and watching them for the umpteenth time is I get to focus on different elements like locking in on Lemmon's face in Some Like It Hot. That's the reason I like Spielberg films because he has no peer when it comes to casting and directing the background players. He's the master at finding so many unknown actors that fill their roles so well. Prime example of that is War Horse, I'd not heard of any of those actors and they were dead on in their portrayals. No small details to Spielberg, they all matter.

CC, I know it's not as old a movie as you've been watching, but have you ever seen Crazy People, with Dudley Moore and Darryl Hannah? It's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, but so few people I know have ever heard of it.

Yep, love that movie. I was a big Dudley Moore fan, he reminded me of Peter Sellers in that he was a comedic actor, like Lemmon, as opposed to a comedian. The scene when he returns from the dentist in 10 is one of my all timers.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood - 7.5/10 Not exactly what I thought it was going to be. There is an excellent doc on Mister Rogers on HBO and I expected this to expand on that and some of the controversy because nobody can be that nice.

Ford v Ferrari - 8/10 I am not an auto racing buff and didn't know the actual history of this but I thought they did a great job of the racing scenes. As usual, Christian Bale did his channeling extremely well as he did in The Fighter. I can see where he might be a handful on the set.

Knew nothing about this movie going into it. Just wanted to see what they hype was since it had a bunch of Oscar nominations. I ended up really loving this movie. So glad I didn't see any trailers either. This made for quite a few surprises while watching it

Parasite 8/10

Same thing as above. Didn't know much but wanted to see what the hype was about. In the end I thought it was good but I personally wouldn't give it best picture. I believe 1917 deserved that honor

Doctor Sleep or Dr Sleep - basically the sequel to The Shining.

Although the original had more build up and the scenes were kind of scarier at the time....I have to say overall I enjoyed this one better.
Some of the flash back scenes were a tad odd. You knew it was flashing back to Danny as a child. However when flashing back they used different actors for the boy, different actor for the mom and flash back or present time they used someone else to play scatmans part. Now I understand they could not use the original actors. The boy being different did not bother me, the mother being different slightly resembled shelly duvall. The scatman character sounded like him more than looked like him but was not really off putting in any way. However when they showed a part in the movie where an adult danny is at the bar at one point someone is talking to him and after the scene I had to go back and realized that it was the father. Problem was it looked, sounded or acted nothing like Jack. Which I thought of all the people who can do an impression of Jack they would have come up with something better.

With that said, I still think I liked the story better overall.

He got that from David Lean.
