So why is the a test for the new coaching staff, wouldn't this still be on the FO as well. I don't think it is a pass or fail test. Not from them.
But for some fans it will be, but at least it will be better than 1,000 more Dak threads.
Ya know. What about us. What about us fans. Do the FO and players even take into account the stress we are going through right now. This could be our biggest offseason ever. Do we cheer differently this year with a different coach. Do I still put my drink down with the star on my cup facing the TV. Or do I turn it towards myself. What about our snacks and game day menu. I hadn’t even thought about that yet. Huge test for us coming up as well.

Think I’m a Cowboys fan forum for over 10 seasons if I have learned anything about this franchise. The salary cap was never an issue. They always found a way to push it forward. They always found a way to get the player they wanted. The point is they don’t want the high price leftover free agent. This is a young man’s game. You can keep those prima donnas in my opinion. Give me a bunch of football players like San Francisco and I will teach them to Play as one and be great. That’s how you build a team in my opinion. With the football players. The problem is finding those guys. And then it’s up to the coaching staff to put the right scheme in place that matches your players best. That’s what we’ve been working. Not Prescott it’s not Elliot it’s not Jalen Smith. It’s the coaching staff that sucked. Worst special teams in the league.Go on I’m not sure many people can comprehend. With the true issue is

We've seen teams built every which way.. There isn't a wrong way to do it.

The problem with Dallas is they did it your way when they should've gone all in during Free Agency when they had Dak & Zeke on their rookie deals.

The Broncos, Rams, and Eagles all got busy in FA the years they went to the Superbowl.

I love what the 49ers did but they invested in defenders.. Dallas invested in RB's, WR's, and mostly offensive players.

Our defense was actually good on paper this past season but when the defense came to play that offense would sit out and vice versa.

To me it's clear you need 2 of 3 things..

1. Quality QB play for cheap.

2. Quality coaching.

3. Top tier defense.

 yeah, tell them about it.

I do the same, as right now, is my coffee cup star facing me, no it is facing my computer screen, but if I use my right hand instead of my left hand it faces toward me. I want them to consider that. :muttley:

As for your drink as well as mine, get a cup or mug or glass with a star on both sides. I think I will drive down to the stadium and sit outside in protest until they make them that way. Or take out a billboard ad. :lmao2:

Signing players free agents deciding who to keep. To me it’s about the front office. Has nothing to do with the coaching staff ability to see what they produce on the field. I don’t put that in the same category so.
front office and coaches have to work together.

After reading about the new CBA, the number of free agents, plus salary cap, we will get an early indication of how good our new coaching staff can be. Even the pro analyst can not decide how this will turn out. My thoughts are this free agent/draft will make or break the Cowboys for the next 5 years.
The new coaching staff gets tested every week and you are oblivious of it. This coming draft is far from their "first test". Which players to re-sign, which players to let go, how the holes will be filled(FA or draft). The FO is working closely with Mike McCarthy and his coordinators to piecemeal this team back together. The new playbook can't really be finalized until they know the composition of this 2020 roster but you can be assured it's being worked on now before the draft even occurs.

its all about the draft. with the new salaries, specially at QB, its all about the draft and taking advantage of your talent in the first 4 or 5 years. unfortunately our past two drafts have been dismal. thus we ended up dipping into FA market. it puts us a couple of years behind since we have not been able to fill a few holes and now due to impending FAs of our own, will have more holes to fill. its the mess Jerry has created.

Being that Jerry has relinquish more control over to his son Stephen Jones and the club counts so heavily on Wil McClay with the player personnel talent, it’s really more on the later two than Jerry himself nowadays.
it should be about BOTH the draft and Free agency. But Stephen jones seems to have a long standing and firm philosophy of how he prefers the Cowboys to operate in FA.

I can understand (and agree) on a couple of those philosophies in
- not being committed to "average " players getting big dollar contracts.
- not being too committed to too 'many " declining, aging 30 players to the roster
- ?? (it was one more but I'll recall it later ..lol)

And what I like this team to much become better at addressing is ... not waiting for that Brick Wall disaster hits before they final decide to make more of an effort to address:
- Sean lee is showing that he cannot stay healthy and we cant operate without him – so how long di it take for us to finally get LVE in as a replacement ?
- Romo is showing us the nagging nick and back issues are affecting him and causing his decline
– how long did it take for us to decide on a true capable RB in Pollard ,,.rather than the likes of Rod Smith ?

and while there's been gret breaks and manuevers such as Cooper and Quinn trades . there's been some hiccups that have proven crippling...
- The Taco pick over TJ Watt - ouch ,,that’s a 1st rounder who was actually cut before his rookie contract was even expired., while Watt is among top defensive players in NFL. .
- Hopefully Trysten Hill turns that potential bad pick around and not end up being like Taco.

- Aside from Dlaw, what other enforcers do we have up front… if we lose Quinn ?

In Free Agency, what outside vet, has been our impact player ? No earl Thomas,.. no Calasis Campbell,.. no Stephen Gilmore, etc, etc. we just do the fillers, decent depth guys ( Hyder, Covington, etc.)
we just don't pursue the big impact guys.like we should
the last was reportedly WR Sammy Watkins., and how would that have worked out with him as a lead WR?

But not establishing a middle ground of adding that impact vet FA player- that’s an area that I think Stephen’s ways are/have crippled this team’s chances.

But it goes beyond the front office’s managing decisions – the past coaching and their own decisions has proven just as crippling,

A star on both sides. That’s brilliant. Possibly the best idea since letting JG walk.

i think the first tests come in the evaluation process. let the NFL handle the NFL, we have a team to build. than let the CBA play itself out and deal with whats in front of us. a lot of bad choices MIGHT still be made, tho we all hope they dont since the coaching staff got a flame thrower to it. however, player selection is far more greater.

lets hope the coaches are viewing film, talking about who to keep, where to upgrade, who to lose.

hopefully Sean lee will play back up, or part time.. Id like to see Witten tossed, and another back up QB brought in, or a vet to challenge. Lots of competition but lets face it, we ve seen the pre season warriors and we ve seen the lesser win and the better be cut at times.

this to me is a far greater challenge, what we do now affects the rest of the season.

Their first test isn't picking the players, it is picking which ones to keep. Then it's how well they utilize those players in their system and how well that adapt it to meet the talent level.

The first test of this HC is his record starting off and at the hallway point. Not a tough schedule and the expectations are to be better than last season. There is no backing up to move forward.

The natives are restless; they were made that way because of the GM's refusal to remove the previous HC when he should have and it's not fair to McC but that's what it is. No honeymoon for you, it's straight to the kitchen and rattle those pots and pans because the fans are hungry.

If Dallas moves on from Dak then I’m willing to give him a little more time. If they sign Dak then he better hit the ground running because there is really no excuse for him to not have instant success.

Everyone would give him more time with a rookie QB but I believe the reason he got the job was that he told them he could win a ring(s) with this QB. His keeping Moore is part of that plan. He's the liaison officer for the QB.

Regardless of what many think here, they are sold on Prescott. They're just miffed because they think he should be more cooperative with them because they picked him in the 4th. Prescott, on the other hand, figures they got the best deal since Brady was drafted with a 3rd day QB.

I am in the middle because I think they could do better but I know they could do worse with their track history. We may be luckier to have him than we know.

Prescott will be McC's QB and his chance at redemption.

If we had better coaching last year then we make the playoffs. If we had a better ST last year then we make the playoffs. Didn’t matter much because once we got there we would have been out coached. Lol. At least now we have a better chance. We will see a better Offense this year.
Out coaching us has always been the problem.

At least for the last 25 years.

For years we have been sold that we had superior talent and becuz of that, the team was merely lining up and trying to win that way.

We as fans were conditioned to believe it, too.

And what we constantly were reminded of was football is a game of emotion. If you can corral the emotion for 60 minutes..

lesser teams will often defeat a team with supposedly superior talent.

It happened to us for years. Our seasons would end early year after year with poor efforts once the regular season ended if not sooner.

Lack of emotion the coaches could not find. And the players could not fake having.

Maybe it’s the team. I mean the whole idea of playing for America’s Team. The infamous Dallas Cowboys. The pinnacle of football. Once your playing for them you have it made. Makes it hard to maintain emotion other tan being happy. Lol.

I have had this feeling for quite some time, too.

Players in Dallas often often shrank from winning I have believed believing next year will be the charm.

There was even an NFL film produced back in the late 60's called "Next Years Champions" because it was so chronic Dallas would choke so predictably.

They could easily resurrect this for the team again.

No?

There are several areas to be rebuilt and just not enough time nor resources.

I have resigned myself to reluctantly not worry about 2020.

It's just in flux. ST is a major rebuild. Both in players and philosophy.

Under Garrett, we went back and forth with being content to kick 50+ yd FGs half of which missed and turned the ball over at midfield..

To having to extend drives to get closer for a closer FG attempt. This meant going for more 4th and 2 yd plays to keep drives alive.

Then we had to cut the FG kicker to stop the nonsense. This is all going on in the last month of the season. That was too little too late.

STs has to redirect its whole vision of what. Is needed there.

Then Jones starting to kick balls out of bounds after 25 yds just finished the ST implosion.

So yeah, ST.

And I am not even mentioning the need for a true kick returner. We have not even mentioned how the other teams consistently started their drives outside their 35 being at midfield within a couple of plays.

That is alot of work ahead us before anything else gets fixed.

Yikes.

It is best to be more conservative than normal with regards to player acquisition, especially free agency.

Give it a year with the new coaching staff. Some existing players will be better with the new staff and some will be worse.

Maybe a couple of free agents like the DT M. Brown to the Saints last off-season for 3 years, 15M total (5M per).

Fill in with more LB Joe Thomas type free agents.

Draft players that are most likely to be good regardless of position.
