The expectation was that a Friday NFL Players Association conference call featuring player representatives from all 32 teams would include a vote about whether they would recommend the proposed Collective Bargaining Agreement to the full membership of the union, but that did not happen. The NFLPA announced that no vote will take place. The NFLPA [more]

What's it say when 6 of the 11 members of the exec committee can't even recommend their own negotiation enough to even present it to the team reps?

They must have received enough quick feedback that a vote was a waste of time.

The owners do not want to pay the players a full game check for that 17th game because it replaces one of the preseason games that the players salaries are a fraction of a real game check. Preseason is a joke, it is a ratings joke but most of all it's a joke on the season ticket buyers paying full price for that crap played by future forklift drivers.

What they should have done was proposed 18 games with the additional TV money supplying the additional 12.5% in salaries because they're the only beneficiary of the increase in games. The they cut the preseason games back to 1 or out altogether, they do not need preseason games to decide on rosters. Unless they ran that by the Nets and they went thumbs down already.

If that's what the reps agreed to then they deserve the negative feedback.

non story here. No vote is going to happen now because both sides are going to meet at the combine. Both sides want it to go down the deadline to force the others hand and see who blinks first. Happens every time the CBA is up for renewal. Its just fans are so dramatic now that the story gets overblown and fans start their own stories in their heads about whats really happening.

Was reading this morning the owners are rushing this through...

"It should worry the players that the NFL owners want this deal done so badly.

"If the owners are so willing to do this deal now, almost a full year before it’s necessary and several weeks before the start of the new league year, what is the reason and what are they gaining from this new CBA?

"The NFL owners want a CBA done ASAP so they can start negotiating new TV and streaming deals. That’s where the bulk of the revenue is generated, and with an additional few weeks and two more playoff games, the NFL can name its price for its rights.

"On top of that, if an agreement can’t be reached, it could lead to a lockout next offseason. That would leave a bad taste in the mouth of consumers, who have driven NFL ratings and profits up over the last two years of the current CBA deal.

"Lastly, tucked away in the bullet points of that deal is a vague mention of gambling:

"Gambling definitions that ensures money is included in players’ definition of All Revenue, including portions of non-football activities"

"That will explode the revenue of the league. This needs to be more defined, but it adds to the reason the NFL wants this done now."

The Cowboys Player Rep is.....Byron Jones. Imagine that? Byron is voting on a CBA that, if approved, would take away the second tag, which would essentially ensure he moves on from the Cowboys.

I don't think it was agreement as such.

The unknown in all of this is what part do the TV nets play in this? That's the Golden Goose and really the only one that makes anything on this, the owners with a high season ticket % make more on preseason games, it's full price on everything but salaries.

The players were already alerted to the additional games idea and 18 must have received a total thumbs down.

Any player making 4M a year doesn't receive a full game check, the others get up to 250K. That means Russell Wilson's usual game check of $2,1875,000 is reduced to $250,000. Gee, why wouldn't he like that?

It's way too early for that vote to take place. That's not how the sausage is made. This thing has to be drawn out and argued over by both sides. This doesn't have to be agreed on by all sides for another whole year. Until then expect drama drama drama.

I like the 4 preseason games but in my opinion they absolutely need at least 2 preseason games. Not just to see who makes the team but if not the first few games of the season will be sloppy.

Some guys that have great practice in training camp fail to produce the same in the preseason games. Look at Johnson WR from this past season, he would have made the team if not for the drops in preseason which could potentially take a roster spot from a more deserving player.

College doesn't need preseason games, they get their players prepared. And the first games of the NFL season are sloppy anyway because the vets don't get enough work.

And there's always the preseason superstar only if you want to see him on Sunday's when it gets real, you'll have to go to Home Depot.

The myth of preseason is that the coaches use that to evaluate players. They don't even use that for bubble players because they're playing against bubble players. They match the players they want to evaluate up against their own in camp and at practice.

They could accomplish more with controlled scrimmages and charge fans to see those.

The work around for the 17 games, if they're expanding the roster, is that no player plays more than 16 regular season games. The players don't have a money beef and the owners get their 17th game. I wonder what % don't play all 16 anyway. Got a player still a little too questionable, make him Inactive Exception ands that's his sit out game.

College has exhibitions but either way they aren't professionals and getting paid. Just about every sport in the professional world has a preseason

Those are usually in the spring and within the team. They do not play preseason games.

Preseason NFL games used to be called Exhibition games and a lot were played in other venues, I saw the Cowboys play in Memphis and Shreveport. They were created to create additional revenue and interest for the real season to start. My favorite was the All Star game where all of the rookies played against the defending champ and some of those "welcome to the NFL hits" by the vets were brutal.

You're still talking about college teams, which aren't professional sports teams.

What's your definition of "required"? MLB has 33 spring games.
It's required because they do it, do they absolutely have to have that? Would the game suffer if they didn't do that? They also aren't in a full contact sport.

Before the NFL became this year round deal, they used training camp to get the players in shape as well as preseason games. Now, a HC is reluctant to lose a starter in a meaningless game. And every season, one drops and we see them backing off on risking players.

For baseball, they actually need the games, especially for rooks and minor league players. Players need more than 1 or 2 or 10 games to project how they will play over the course of a season. In addition, they need to show how they will play on defense. Hitting .350, but having 10 errors is a problem. Also, it may take a few games for a player to settle nerves and show what could be over the course of a season..
