NFL player leadership is still divided over the thought of a 17-game season, falling into three categories when discussing the proposed new collective bargaining agreement, sources told ESPN.

Whatever trade-offs (salary increases, health/safety compensation, other perks, etc) that the players are gonna want for a 17-game season will be the ongoing hangup on the new CBA.

These players can’t even do 10 games and they want to move to 17?

this is why I don’t take the health concerns the nfl is supposedly big on serious

If anything go back to 14......
Will never happen ($$$$), but that’s not a bad idea.

The NFL owners are heartless. The longtime health of these players is no concern for them. The 17 game proposal is proof of that. So If I’m the players I ask for something extraordinary in return. Like hey, let’s get rid of the salary cap and implement a luxury tax system similar to what the NBA or MLB have. Or hey, let’s make all NFL salary’s fully guaranteed. No more incentive contracts. But NFLPA is weak compared to the other league’s players unions so I doubt we will see demands like this.

Long term health care is an issue. NFL players only have coverage for 5 years after their careers are over, compared to other sports that provide lifetime coverage.

The NFLPA is accountable too with their own members hitting each other in the head every game.....and then they have the guile to appeal the suspensions for said head shots

The player reps being unanimous would be bigger news. Being divided is to be expected and thus not news.

NFL doesn't want to get sued. That is very different that actually being concerned for player safety. By the way if players want to be safe they can just choose not to play, which some have chosen to do. It's not all on the league, and they get paid really well for the risk.

Taking away a meaningless pre-season game and making one of them an actual game doesn't seem that big of a deal to me. Don't care how many pre-season games there, somebody's health is on the line in those games. If it's actually about player safety then a guy who is going to get cut should matter as much as the star players.

A question.

Since it is an odd number, how is it determined who gets a home or away game?

It almost has to be a neutral site.

Good point. Haven't thought of that until now. Plus, there's going to be more complaints from teams having an early bye week.

And, can we assume the season will now start in August, or will the Super Bowl get pushed up to the second week of February?

The Players have a legit gripe on this deal. A seventeen game season is a 6.25% increase in workload. The NFL is offering half that in extra salary compensation. I don't think it gets done for much less than a 50% overall revenue share.

I prefer 18 even numbers as well.

I dont know the ins and out but fully expanded rosters active on game day ie 53...no inactives & still have a PS and somehow get the byes correct maybe no more playing games on 3 days rest and having them have you travel the game before and play the late game!!!

they need to get this correct before they approve..

I bet that odd game will be used for heavy international exposure. Goodell is a POS who only cares about growing revenue streams (new fans). Could care less about the players or the exitsting fan base (you - they have you already). Meanwhile, the quality of the game has really taken a dive.

Contract will be decided by rank and file players and I don't understand how they can't get a 2/3rds majority vote.

Exactly, what these player reps, or the group that voted against it have to say, the rank and file players will make the final decision. And those guys want their money - now. And I fully expect that a majority will vote to accept the deal, rendering what anyone else is saying as irrelevant.

A good point you made about the preseason games... having said that I wonder if a lot of the bigger name players (and perhaps consequently more vocal) are unfazed by the preseason reduction since they barely play in them anyway.

I read some chatter about more Mexico City and England games being worked into the schedules
