There are going to be a couple dozen good DTs this FA

I'm not convinced that signing Cooper to such a big deal is a good idea, to be honest.
For a guy that has shown big flashes at home, he sure disappears on the road.
Not to mention talks of him fetching 20 million/yr on the open market.
I feel the same about Jones. Good player, going to be too expensive.
Rather sign Dak, bring back Cobb. Try for Quinn, but if not, there should be some fairly productive alternatives available.
DT and Safety have been major weaknesses since the dynasty teams.
Good DTs (not necessarily all pros, but productive) can be found without wrecking the cap.
Same for safety if you look at the second tier of guys.

Fyi, you can save a good chunk of cap by releasing Crawford.

Crawford needs a significant pay cut and keep him around to avoid the dead money. Plus if he hits FA instead of getting cut he fits into the comp pick formula.

With both of Crawford's hips getting worn out. I think its time he retires.

What about developing Tristen Hill and not using up our best round picks on DT. I'd rather have a S or a CB that can intercept passes.
Only issue is if teams can run for 200 yds on the line we have there will not be many interceptions to be had because they won’t need to throw.

This is true but the line we had was never going to return, even if it is the same guys. You have to know they are watching tape and fixing things. The coaches will have a big part to play in this.

Trysten Hill is not a prospect I want to hang my season on. Can he get better? Probably. Nobody knows how much that is. Could also be what we have already seen, which was not great.

I can’t see this FO ignoring defensive tackle in FA and the draft. If we do well in FA before the draft we don’t have to be as desperate for Kinlaw to fall to us or move up. This doesn’t seem like a deep draft for tackle. So all the more reason to be more solid before April if possible. A lot of solid options in FA. Definite upgrades over what we have fielded IMHO

Hill was just a pup last season. The coach's mission this preseason is to find that inner junkyard dog in him or cut bait. I agree, don't hang the season on his development. We have to have others to plug in there. just in case and we will. Whether if its through FA or the draft, we will be getting that position shored up. We have to.

I resort to Trysten as Marinelli type guy and I’m certainly not bypassing a top regarded DT for the sake of Hill's previous 2nd round pick still being here.
sure I don’t want to give up on Hill completely as if he were already cut from the team, as maybe he could have some kinda value, even if it's the 3rd DT off the rotation bench.
and you never know what the next coach can get out of you what they previous coaches could not (ala Byron jones at safety) we need to see what ‘extra “ luxury Hill can become to some degree.

I can’t see the team totally ignoring DT in free agency.
But I can see Stephen Jones going right back to that Marinelli dry well of bargain binging for JAGS/decent type run of the mill vet DTs again. Antwuann Woods, Chris Covington, Richard Ash, Terrell McClain, Brian Price , Cedric Thornton, Stephen Paea, Nick Hayden, etc. etc. etc.
- maybe it's just me, but I don’t trust (expect?) Stephen to go after the more higher regarded, young DTs – particularly the 1 tech vets.

- With helped needed with Jones expected departure,.. Heath likely gone, ..Quinn’s return in question, and immediate replacement needed,... Maleik likely overpriced and gone, ..the need to vastly upgrade over Woods/Covington at the 1 tech, … the need to bring in more competitors vs Awuzie and Xavier – this just cannot be addressed and covered in just the NFL draft alone.

- And whether draft/FA/trade, Stephen/McClay are gonna have to make this offseason a significant jump in added talent acquisition.

It all depends. Hill only had one dominant trait for which he was drafted. We really don't know if he can play in the NFL.

I'm willing to concede that point which is why the coaching staff needs to make it their mission this preseason to find his inner junkyard dog or cut bait.

Exactly why I'm keeping an eye on the position. As of now, we don't know what MM 2-3 year plan for the D. It could be he planning to switch to 3-4 by year 2 or 3. Couldn't do this year coz of personnel but will run some hybrid 3-4. For me, I would not hesitate to pull the trigger for a 2nd or 3rd round stud.

I feel like they could do it this year if they wanted to. There is barely anyone under contract on the d line anyway so they are rebuilding that unit either way.

I see you want to let the #3 ranked free agent walk so the Cowboys can sign some OK DT's that teams are willing to let walk. Ah yes build that championship team with bargain castoff players. Don't try to resign good talent when you can get cheaper OK talent.

If I had to pick between Quinn and Jones, I'd take Quinn.

Can still sign a DT and develop Hill.

Although didn't SJ say they have put off FA plans based off the CBA?

No, he needs to be cut.

Rip off that bandaid once and for all and stop wasting money on a non-starter.

He's on the top of my list as well. But my lone fear is paying him a lot of guaranteed money. Based on his personality and track record, he's a guy that you pay-as-you-go to keep him in line and properly motivated.
