Chiefs will ask Sammy Watkins to take pay cut or be released?

Uhhh the Chiefs did exactly what the Cowboys did with Dez Bryant. This isn’t foreign. Chiefs can’t afford him.
But Dez was disruptive, and selfish , and on the decline , and one important thing ,, Dez never sniffed a super bowl or a conference championship..So excuse the difference in perspective.

Smart move by the Chiefs, they have a ton of money locked up in the WR/TE position and they're getting inconsistent production from their top paid guy who's really their 3rd receiving option.

Wonder if Mahomes working out with Dez was more of a scouting session to see if he could replace Watkins for 1/10 of the cost?

I'd take a flier on Dez maybe for us, but certainly for any team but us. Likely comes very cheap with large upside.

Poor fit for us because of history. Much like Witt. They're both guys that we'd be giving more deference than their current play may merit. Can't just dump them at the end of preseason to save cap and trouble.

This is how winning NFL managements handle the cap space . Realistic , honest and bold . No emotions .
On the other hand Jerry handed a selfish and holdout and disruptive zeke a top contract guaranteed despite a Cabo holdout .

If they really spent like drunken sailors they would have topped the FA contract the Chiefs gave Watkins. The one the Chiefs are trying to get out of at this point.

Old news from back in January.

"I don't want to say I will be open to a pay cut. I don't want to say I won't," Watkins told NFL.com "I just think I'm a special player. I think I deserve all the things I deserve. If I'm at home and thinking about it, if I have to do it to pay Pat, I maybe will.

That's a guy that we should pay, and he needs to get paid. But you never know, that's a decision I'd have to go through."

He has a ring. Why on earth would you take a pay cut? Make them cut you and watch some other team step up and overpay.
That's not gonna happen, that's why they are wanting a paycut.

He's had a 2x all-pro MVP caliber quarterback for 2 seasons and hasn't done anything. No team is overpaying someone that's a non-factor in an elite system.

Usually if someone is demaning a pay cut it's not a good thing. Tyrone Crawford is a very good cowboys example, no way he's getting even close to 8 million we save if another team signs him

A recent example of the cowboys doing the exact oppisite is Crawford last season

We could of literally upgraded both DT positions for the exact price of cutting him........... (doesn't that make our fanbase sick to there stomachs ?).

Cowboys front office isn't bold, isn't realistic, and has too many emotions. The narrative was "we can't cut Crawford because that would make us look bad for giving a bid deal" or "uhhh he's a locker-room leader", "he's our friend".

F%#%@% pathetic

So now this the Chiefs Zone? At least post this crap in the NFL forum and not the Cowboys Fan Zone. LOL

The Chiefs are evaluating all their player's salaries so they can best make room for the exorbitant contract about to come aboard, going to Pat Mahomes. They are smart to be doing this ahead of time. But to be far to Sammy Watkins, he should refuse to take less. He is worth what he is getting paid and could be paid more if the Chiefs decide to move him. They would be doing him a favor, money-wise.

Spotrac estimates his contract at 11mil/year, 3 years. Depends what KC offers as the cut. He's currently at 14 for this year. If the cut isn't too bad, maybe he figures he's better off waiting for his next contract until after the CBA.
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/sammy-watkins-14413/

If you look at his numbers, he disappeared in the back half of the season. Cobb was much more productive.

No way would I pay him 11mil/year. We'll see what the league has to say about that.

Yeah, possible out in 2020. The Chiefs are looking at a 21 million dollar cap hit if they keep him. I highly doubt he's on their roster next year at that price.

I would not touch Watkins. He commitment is legitimately in question, which is his right but would make me reluctant to throw any money at him.

You think a team won’t pay a 26 year old former top pick in the draft? I’ve seen Anthony Hitchens get overpaid. Someone will pay Watkins that has the money to spend.

I agree. Some team will probably spend some cash on him. If he sits out a year I doubt he would come back and get a big contract, which is why I doubt he goes that route.

He's a good #2 receiver that was hyped to be the next #1 in the NFL.

Wouldn't pay him more than Tyrell Williams.

I don't see it, he's a former first round pick but too much nothing since then. It's not like this is his third season and he's unknown, this would be his 7th season

Hasn't had a thousand yard season in five years and has been injured/banged up in three of the last four

He's basically an okay name that's about it. No disrespect to Sammy but when you're 26 years old and you're already looking at your 4th team no amount of 2014 era hype will help (especially when you put up #3 receiver numbers )

He's essentially an exact replica of Michael Crabtree who never got big money. Nobody is over paying for Sam at this point in his career both achievements and length

Because he's honest and realizes he did not play up to his salary?

Crabtree did get overpaid though lol. And that’s a great example.
