The combine does lie just look at how many workout warriors have failed in the NFL. The combine clearly has value but you can’t put too much stock into it. I’m real leery of players who increase their draft position by a couple of rounds strictly due to their combine workout.

Right, you see a lot of players increase their draft stock due their combine and pro day workouts. Prior to their workouts some are projected in the fourth or fifth round and after great workouts they jump to the third maybe late second round. You also see the opposite happen where a player can drop in the draft due to a poor workout or a bad 40 time. I prefer spending more time evaluating how they played on the field. Several players who ended up great NFL players were taken later in the draft due to unimpressive workouts.

That is true.

Here's another one, workout warriors aren't necessarily good football players.

Good football players that are workout warriors go in the first round though.

Leighton Vander Esch went in the first round because he was a good college player but an unreal workout guy.

Great workouts mean high upside.

They’re solid points.

The tape is what matters most.

The combine is useful, in making sure a good college football player has the required athleticism to continue being a good player in the NFL.

but a good combine doesn’t make a poor college player, a good nfl player.

Right. The combine is good for confirming that a good player has the natural talent needed to maintain being productive in the nfl.

Where teams get into trouble, is when they draft somebody who isn’t a good football player in college but take them just because they test well in the combine.

Emmitt dropped in the draft due to his 4.6 time. Jerry Rice also had an unimpressive 4.6 40 time which caused him to fall. The 40 time is the one area where NFL teams put too much importance on which can cause a real good player to fall. Some players play faster than they time. Emmitt and Jerry Rice certainly did. Go look at the list of long runs Emmitt had. Jimmy said he wasn’t bothered by his 40 time because he saw a 90 yard run he had at Florida and no one ran him down.

The 40 is not overrated at all.. It’s a great measurement of explosiveness..

Again.. If the player is good but then runs a 4.3 40 it’s going to bump his stock and rightfully so.

That doesn't neccesarily mean they won't be or become busts. Especially quarterback's. On the defensive side, Miami's Dion Jordan comes to mind. Sad.
They're all good if they made the combine.

There are levels to being good...

If a player is projected as a 2nd rounder and they have an unreal workout then odds are that will bump them into the 1st.

They're all good if they made the combine. Although anyone can apply, the NFL requests that only those with a high level of ability register.

If you catch a scout's eye during the athletic drills and measurements, you may be invited to try out at the National Combine. That's the one that counts.

Not necessarily saying it’s overrated but I think too much weight is put on it. There’s been a number of great players in the NFL who didn’t have good 40 times. The one position where I think it’s very important is at corner. You need speed and recovery to stay with a receiver. Morris Claiborne ran a 4.57 40 which had to be the slowest 40 time I had ever heard of for the top rated corner in the draft. It raised the eyebrows of many of us on this board the day we drafted him.
