I don't know the answer to this off the top of my head but has CBS ever not had the NFL?

Yes - from 1994-1997. That's how Fox got into the game. The NFC package had been with CBS since the 1960s, and NBC had the AFC package. Fox blew everyone's bids out of the water, and took over the NFC package in 1994. CBS took the AFC package from NBC starting in 1998.

good point, nance is a good partner for tony, should be a pkg deal, but chances are he wont get a raise, heck maybe eve a pay cut lol.
one thing this tells me is network tv makes many millions off ads for nfl games , or they could not afford to pay any one announcer that much money.

This makes me wonder about the companies that spend the millions to advertise on network tv. Then wonder about how stupid the ads are!
it is a crazy world.
I think if I was going to do an ad lol I would like to have jerry come on and do 30 seconds of jerry speak , with my products name flashing in the
back ground! I think that would stick jin peoples brains, they would be trying to figure out what jerry was saying, so they might not even notice
the flashing product name lol.

Networks lose money on the NFL. The amount that they pay to carry and produce the games is not made up for by advertising. They are willing and delirious to carry the NFL for three reasons:
  1. They get a guaranteed huge audience on Sundays, with some spillover into programming following it. 60 Minutes on CBS is a huge example of this. It has routinely been a top five program in the ratings for 50 years, and the NFL lead in is a huge reason why.
  2. As per above, it affords the network a 3-6 hour window to broadly promote their regular programming to a captive audience. They believe that there is a trickle down effect to their other properties. The NFL is called a "loss leader" for this reason.
  3. They get the Super Bowl every four seasons, and that's the one time where they can actually make a significant amount of money on the NFL.

Man that's great to see. I'll always root for the guy. And the fact he will be making more than the majority of his haters is always hilarious
Mostly what I enjoy is being able to go to either of the networks and hear former Cowboy QBs call the big games.

Tony may not reach the HofF in football like Troy..

but he stands a great chance at winning TV Emmy awards for years to come.

Great for him. Soon kids are going to want to grow up to be football broadcasters..not QBs.

Yikes.

Good money if you can get it. Capitalism at it's finest. Why should he be under scrutiny? He’s an analyst with a football background & opinions, he doesn’t affect the outcome of games. That said, the media are a catty, backstabbing bunch, & will use their platform (and jealousy) to shame Romo about his value.

Michael Thomas is going to be even more upset. The Saints receiver bristled at the news that the Tony Romo will make $17 million per year under his new deal with CBS. Andrew Marchand of the New York Post now reports that the deal is worth $18 million per year, over 10 years. It's actually [more]

I read that John Madden was paid 8m per year by CBS back in 1994, that was more than any player was making in the NFL at the time, who cares what an announcer makes it has no bearing or effect on what our team does, good for Tony glad he got the payday

I agree with all 3 of those, but the nfl games get high ratings, and the ad prices are based on how a show is rated, same as SB.
Nfl games are their highest rated shows.
Ratings on regular tv shows have gone way down and continue downward.

Good on you, Tony! You are a natural! You've earned it.
But who the hell is MicheleThomas?
Whoever she is, 10 years hence she'll be on the streets selling knockoff purses while Romo is pulling in $20+ million a year. Heh.

This is true, but they do not recoup their investment on the ad dollars for regular NFL games. The networks all lose money broadcasting the NFL. They are willing to do it because of the reasons I stated.

Questions for those of us who were old enough at that time...

Do you remember back then when Fox signed Madden? And some people complained he was not worth what he was getting paid? And how some players felt disenfranchised his contract would be more than 90% of what players made each year?

Yep. I do not remember anything remotely close to current disgruntlement either. Probably because the negative reaction never happened.

Just another example of a long line of gripes about Romo. Does not matter what he says or does. Some people simply do not like the guy and will remind everyone else just how much on every opportunity.

Hes still getting paid regardless. Will laugh all the way to the bank.

From the article: "ESPN has reported that Romo’s new deal covers the next three seasons only, and that the next seven become triggered by a new CBS deal to broadcast NFL games."

A couple of years ago I said he would make more as a broadcaster than he did as a player.

That's not it. Society is very different now.
No social media to hide behind back in the good ol' days.
