17 Game Schedule - where and who?

Here's what I see: How about, the extra game is matched by finishing (draft order) per conference. Ex: SF vs KC GB vs TEN, ...... WAS vs MIA. Tries to make it "fairly" matched (though how one team improves/regresses from one year to the next is a TOTAL mystery). Winner of the Pro Bowl (so it's not meaningless anymore) gets to have an extra home game the next year.

I think you are wrong on that. On one of the sites I read that in 2021 when the league switches to 3 preseason games the week when the 4th game would have been played will now be a bye week for all teams. I think probably the NFL didn't want to start the league on Labor Day weekend. They tried that about 20 years ago and it didn't go over very well. To many people have family type things going on during the Labor Day weekend.
.
They have not even determined which year the 17 game schedule will begin so how can they be making plans for labor day 2021?

As long as they rotate the 17th game, I don't care.

I may be remembering wrong but didn't baseball do a system where they established permanent "interleague rivals" where each AL team was matched with an NL team (usually for regional, geographic reasons) for yearly matchups that the rest of their division didn't have to play? So if your team got stuck playing the Yankees every year because MLB thought it made for a good rivalry, and if your division foe got to play some trash team like the Orioles or whoever, it meant you were getting screwed with your pants on.

I don't want that kind of nonsense.

I don't want to get stuck playing a perpetually good team every year while the Giants get to play someone like the Jets every year, in other words.

They need to rotate the opponents, so it's luck of the draw if we happen to play a bad team one year while the Eagles or Giants draw a good team. And they need to rotate the location so that everyone in our division has the same number of home and road games.

MLB sets up the inter league games on a 2 year basis. They are an equal number of games from both the eastern and western divisions. They do it for 2years at a crack so all teams have the same number of home and away games with each team they're scheduled from the other league. After 2 years they schedule different teams for again 2 years.

From what I've read on the NFL site the extra or 17th game, whenever during the season that is with be a inter conference game based on the previous season's record and the conferences will alternate being home team by years. So all the extra games will be played at NFC sites one year and then at AFC sites the next. I heard one talking head say that which ever conference is the away year the network that is usually associated with that conference will get to pick 8 of the 16 games that season to be carried on their network and then vice versa the following year. So teams like the skins, giants, bucs, lions, cardinals, maybe the bears and panthers games wouldn't get claimed by FOX.

I should have worded that a little clearer. The site said IT COULD start in the 2021 season and if it did the league has talked about making what was the 4th preseason game a bye week for everyone. I think, again I think it's because the NFL tried opening on Labor Day weekend about 20 years ago and they got terrible push back on that because families have long histories of family type things going on that weekend. The 4th preseason game had always been a very low watched game because it was on Labor Day weekend.

So, sports fans, the NFL is progressing to a 17 game schedule. As this is still being hashed out by the NFL, it opens the door for much speculation about the eventual details.

The 17th game would be an odd numbered game. Under the current scheduling procedures, this results in half the teams being the hosting team for nine games and the other half as the visiting team for nine games - most likely in alternating years, to keep it fair.

Also, what determines the opponents in the the odd numbered game? The current scheduling practice:
Six games against divisional opponents — two games per team, one at home and one on the road.
Four games against teams from a division within its conference — two games at home and two on the road.
Four games against teams from a division in the other conference— two games at home and two on the road.
Two games against teams from the two remaining divisions in its own conference — one game at home and one on the road. Match ups are based on division ranking from the previous season.

Does the NFL add another inter-conference game or an intra-conference game? Or some other choice?

As has been discussed on many sports news sites, the possibility exists that the NFL might schedule more international games and perhaps neutral site games within the US.

I could also see more teams being added to the mix. Which cities would be added?

How do you see the makeup of the odd numbered games?
I like the idea of playing one game at a neutral site. A mix of international and stateside. How about some games in cities that don't have an NFL team. Of course London, Tokyo, Rio, Sydney should be in the mix but, also Memphis, Louisville, Albuquerque or even Anchorage. Maybe even several Canadian cities before it gets too cold. This would be better than having alternating years of 9-8, 8-9 home/away schedules.

Somehow, Someway Cowboys vs. Houston @ DKR Memorial Stadium in Austin is bound to happen.....
Last year, a Sports Illustrated writer speculated that the Austin/San Antonio area might serve as an NFL landing spot in the future due to the large TV market. I could see it as a large metropolis in the future.

That's all speculation. The way I laid it out is how it was laid out by the owners to the NFLPA.

:muttley: It's coming. A man's reach should exceed his grasp, as Browning put it. Will they ever exceed their grasp?
Yup. I've heard of thinking outside the box. These owners are thinking outside their minds! It's getting ridiculous. Instead of guaranteed money there should be performance based incentives. It won't be long before nose-bleed seats will be $500 each.

The average family can't afford to attend games much less buy overpriced fan jerseys for their children. It's becoming a privileged spectator event. The kicker will come when you have to pay to watch any broadcast of the NFL.

I meant to state, Will their grasp ever exceed their reach?

Two games against teams from the two remaining divisions in its own conference — one game at home and one on the road. Match ups are based on division ranking from the previous season.
My guess is they just add a 3rd one of these, that is easiest, and would be based on previous year like these 2.

I would like to see a "division" game but with maybe a team from the other conference. Like Houston vs Dallas or Rams vs Chargers, 49ers vs Raiders....... that way both teams gets a chance to play a home game and away game against that team. Could also be a rival, like Dallas and 49ers/Pittsburgh etc.

This is actually a great idea imo. Maybe even dedicate a week for “regional rival” games. Similar to what baseball used to do when they dedicated a certain section of the season to interleague games. Then you could even rotate home and away games every year.
