teams are desperate to gain cap money so they are making risky deals.. Its that simple. Means Houston isn't done.
Good point. I'm not sure exactly what their cap is looking like right now, but I imagine Houston is looking at this as Johnson + 2nd round pick + Free Agent pickup

Johnsons deal for 2020 is only 2.3 less million dollars than Hopkins deal.

Hopkins is playing for dirt cheap right now (12.5 million for an all-pro WR). Houston basically traded a steal contract for a bloated RB contract + a 2nd (lol).

That's what crazy, they don't get any real cap relief by doing this, they only save 2.3 million

Hopkins signed his deal years ago. He's only 12.5 million for 2020 and 13.5 for 2021.

He's playing well under market rate. Why would they dump him then sign an inferior player for 5-7 more million dollars a year ?

Thanks for the cap numbers.
So they gain $2.3 in cap and a 2nd for a 4th round pick. Maybe they will target a WR in the draft, since it seems a deep WR draft.

There was no cap benefit to this deal though. Hopkins was on Houston’s books for $14m. Johnson’s salary with Hopkins’s dead money is $14.1m. This was a roster move, not a cap move.

Swell. Meanwhile the woeful OL and secondary will go unaddressed...again.

just wait and see where all the dominoes fall first..then maybe it will make more sense. Its a puzzle and its not done. Mostly this was done for cap savings.

Where are the savings? They now have to make a move to replace Hopkins. They really didn't save any money through this trade for this season. Whatever they saved on Hopkins, Johnson eats up. Now they have to spend money to bring in Cooper or some other replacement. Hopkins contract was relatively inexpensive and they could have extended him to gain cap relief. It is a strange move. I like David Johnson, but he is not close to the contract he is paid. He had one very good season and will also be 29 this season.

Amari and his agent were in no hurry.

Why would they be?

You can't sign guys if they plan to wait and get the most cash possible.

Yes I posted this in another thread it would make zero sence for Coop to sign so he can see if someone blows their socks off with an offer

Crazy trade. Maybe Houston thinks they can grab a couple receivers in this deep draft.

me thinks they aint done. I hear they are after Amari Cooper.
That still doesn’t really address my question. If you don’t clear that much room with a Johnson-Hopkins swap... then why do it as a salary dump? You’re just swapping Uber-talent for good talent and not clearing that much space.

Then if they sign Amari, all you did was get a lesser WR ( who is still expensive) for a better one, and you added a good RB.

Why not keep your expensive WR and then get a RB in FA or the draft. It makes no sense.
