They had a DL problem last year and the year before and the year before and the year before and the year before and the year before
One name-Marinelli but I don't expect much better this year or next, not until we have drafted for 3 years a group of guys that can get it done together, like how San Fran did.

It's kind of strange it's not talked about more but the Cowboys have a real problem at DL right now.

They have one upper echelon player. Lawrence. That's it. DE depth after him is now Armstrong, Gregory, Jelks and Jackson. That's it.

DT isn't much better as Collins is a FA. Woods is OK. Hill? Ehhh?

Of course there is also Crawford, who is serviceable but not great at either DE or DT.

It's going to be interesting to see where this front office goes along the DL. Certainly they could be looking at the draft but there are other needs that they may need to look at in the draft.

agree
We need starters at both DT spots and DE opp DLaw
This FO is run by morons so we have ignored it

We’re gonna suck. No pass rush unless RG gets reinstated. I don’t even care given this COVID-19 BS.

They're certainly going to need other options. Tired of putting 0 sacks Crawford out there and tying one arm behind our backs, as well as waiting for this to finally be 'Armstrong's year!'

Let me clarify a bit. Yes, we've talked about DT as a need but overall people have largely ignored DE as an issue. DE might be as big a need as DT at this point.

"Might"????? Now with Quinn gone, it's our #1 priority IMO

We need legit starters at both DE and DT in free agency...AND invest at least 2 picks in the 1st 4 rounds in DL as well.

We need to start making some sort of investment there. Personnel execs are talking about the 'smart teams' investing heavily in the defensive line, while we watch the few we have walk out the door.

DT is a huge problem. Also, I know Marinelli is a curse word here, but there is a chance the guys returning form last year may have over performed. So you need to factor that in.

I don't think this team is a championship contender next year. The next two drafts will decide if that will be possible after that. But my current wish for this team would be the following this offseason:

1) 1 maybe two good DT
2) upgrade the special teams to good---getting that unit to good is going to take a lot of work
3) play making safety

I think this is very doable. Maybe finding two really good tier DT may be tough, but doable. These were big needs last offseason as well. It is just really scary the Cowboys thought they were going "all in" last year and they either misevaluated or overlooked these three issues.

Maybe we talk to George Edwards about some of his former charges with the Vikings? There seem to be a few available:
  1. Everson Griffin
  2. Linval Joseph
  3. Anthony Harris (trade?)
  4. Xavier Rhodes

They have had a problem on the DL for a long time because DE is the only position they put a high value on for Booger to get his "war daddy". They have not had rotational depth unless you consider, except for Lawrence, they're all average and interchangeable.

They had to trade up to get Lawrence and he took 2 picks and they wasted a 1st on Charleton.

Now they have to address the CB position because if they go with Awuzie and Lewis and some mid round CB picks, they are back to where they were with that draft that got them.

When you consider the cap committed to the O, 7 of the 11 starters in the top 6 paid, and this DL and secondary, you have to sell yourself on being optimistic with this D.

This team is going to ride that O but that's nothing new as they've done that for a long time. They just better hope that 20M WR is consistent because he disappears this year and that's a L. That O has to be top 3, nothing less will do. And they better top 30+ in scoring and not just against the bad teams.

The D was average last year, except with turnovers and they were poor, bottom of the barrel. We better hope that they can just get back to average this season. The 2 best players on the D last season are gone and the LB is an unknown with his neck.

And I don't want to add rain to this parade but that DC, he's not a great improvement over what they had.

Buck up buttercups, we ride this O as far as it will take us. And we've had good, not great, seasons before with an average D so we could still make the playoffs.

Not even close, CB is by far the #1 priority. We can’t go into the season with Awuzie and Lewis as the #1 and #2 corners.
And at 17, I like the pickins at CB over DE. This is a better DT draft than DE.

Hey, the Skins wanted Cooper and were willing to pay him more. Trade them Cooper and use their 2nd for Chase Young. He and Lawrence could form the best DE tandem in the league. Then we can still use our 17th on a CB or WR.

Irving & Gregory don't look so bad now do they?

Chaisson has to be in play now at 17.

I'd call around the league and see if we could trade our 1 for a guy like saaaay... Von Miller maybe? Joey Bosa? No way Chargers trade him but hey who knows.

You can’t count on either...you need them and a back up plan. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take them, but you need a 3rd person relying on these two nuckle heads.

Ware and Spencer, lacked consistent inside pressure

Glover and Ellis, short lived, still needed at least another piece.

Lawrence and Taco/Quinn/Gregory, needed inside help.

How long before the team realizes we need tackles?

Griffin would be a solid addition. I would definitely consider a 5th or so for Harris. I would be targeting DJ Reader (several good DTs available) in free agency.

The way it shaping up so far, this off season could be a serious disaster. They lost Jones, Quinn and Cobb already. They have signed no one except Cooper whom they paid way too much to keep. They franchise Dak which maximizes his cap impact and virtually assure they will lose more of their own guys and be unable to sign good players from other teams. Its early and I am not going to panic or run out and by 250 rolls of toilet paper yet, but I kind of hoped they would sign at least one of those guys and a free agent DT by now.

The thing is some of the free agents who signed already were not that expensive. Shaq Lawson got $30 million for 3 years. Hargrave got $39 from the eagles for 3 years. The Eagles defense is always good because they make sure they are strong up the middle. They already have Cox but they get Hargrave too. Even Quinn only got $14 million a year. That $7 million less than Lawrence!

More holes in the roster of opening up with every FA loss. This is not how we want to go into the draft.
