A lot of faith in guys that have never really played and a guy who hasn't played in 2 years.

And I like Gregory and argued that we should keep him when people were saying cut him. But I also am a realist and he hasn't played in 2 years. I am not sure you can just assume he's going to be better than Quinn. And Jelks and Jackson? They are more likely to join the list of overhyped practice players that never amount to much than they are of becoming better than Quinn.

Right. I love Gregory but there is entirely to much faith in this guy being back. I need him to get reinstated first

He sat out one year. In 2018 he was a difference maker. Made an impact. Can actually stop the run.

He was OK against the run. He also hasn't suited up in awhile (1 or 2, doesn't matter). To think he's going to just hit the ground and be a dominant DE, specifically at getting after the QB is just a bit of homerism.

There is the very real possibility he won't be as good as Quinn, or at least, take quite a few games to get back into a sort of game shape.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I get it. They have an organizational philosophy to pour resources into the DL. That's their belief. But Cox and Hargrave mauling people in the middle isn't going to help Wentz complete passes.

I am really surprised they weren't in on the Hopkins deal. They have like 10 picks, so they could have probably moved some things around if they wanted.
If they build up the talent around Wentz, they have as good if not better chance of succeeding than we do.

He is not part of their problem.

Seems to me the Eagles don't know what to do on D and their WRs are awful.

And they have no CBs. Their best one from last year, Mills, wasn't all that good to begin with and they re-signed him and are apparently moving him to S.

That's some Jerry Jones' style roster management at two positions they sucked at in 2019.

I can tell you right now. They didn't call.

Our front office is not especially connected to others in the league and trade relationships are not exactly that strong.

So, grade please.
C and yeah they got McCoy but why couldn't they get both? Use the 2nd to replace Cooper?

How about Malik Jackson? How much is he costing them? How many snaps are there to go around to get a proper return on those investments?

I am really surprised they weren't in on the Hopkins deal. They have like 10 picks, so they could have probably moved some things around if they wanted.

While they're seemingly keeping the oft-injured Desean Jackson or the malcontent Jeffrey? I don't get it.

I want to be happy but Jerry keeps getting in my way: they should have used the non exclusive tag on Dak to try to get 2 firsts or set his value realistically for him and his team to see, don’t pay Cooper 20 mill with this historically deep wide receiver draft class - plus Hopkins and Diggs being available to at least kick the tires, retaining a few of their own guys was not bad and McCoy addition was good. But most disappointing is the opportunity cost of all these other signings going on. Stephen believes that if you sign anybody in the first 3 weeks of free agency, you have overpaid. Sometimes you have to spend money to get value, Stephen. Apparently he needs to save free agency money to overpay Zeke, Dak, and Coop. D grade.

Stood pat and overpaid for QB

Stood pat and overpaid for WR.

Stood pat and overpaid TE.

Upgraded at 3Tech, McCoy over Collins.

Seriously downgraded at CB.

Lost Quinn.

Solid re-signings of Joe Looney and Sean Lee.

Awful re-signing of Anthony "Penalty Machine" Brown or Darian "Nothing" Thompson.

Yet to address glaring needs at Safety and 1Tech.

C- / D+

Leaning towards the C- since we finally rid ourselves of Jeff Heath. Huge Addition by Subtraction strategy.

He was OK against the run.

I'm not sure I'd even call it that. Some may forget the Rams giuging both Crawford and Gregory with the run to the tune of 273 yards, but I don't.

There's a real possibility we never see the guy again. Some might want to again rely on unreliable people, I hope the Cowboys don't.

Well, so basically the offense is entirely intact except slot receiver and between Jarwin and Pollard we have a couple of guys that can help out there.
Interior DL is instantly better because unlike Collins (terrible against the run), McCoy is a good run defender. If Grass King Gregory is reinstated (and should stay so given the new lax weed stance by the NFL) that could help. I seriously prefer to add a FA DE though. The team still lacks a 1T and SS, too.
Love keeping Forbath a kicker. Replace Jones and special teams could be at least league average.
Overall, maybe a B-? C+? In other words, not bad, leaves a bit to be desired though.

He is actually kind of not.

Thompson was not on the field enough for teams to key on him.

We all hate Heath because he got exploited. That is because he was always out there.

Thompson is a garbage player and a step down, sorry to say.
I really don’t care about Thompson or heath. They both suck.

If I had to grade, I would say a C- at this point.

I think getting McCoy and losing Quinn is a bit of a wash. We got better at the 3T, but downgraded at the RDE, unless of course, Gregory can come back and build on '18.

The secondary has gotten worse. Heath was not great, but he is better than Thompson and Wilson is still an unknown.

And of course, Jones is a BIG loss.

Losing Cobb was not great, but he cost way too much and quite honestly with Coop, Gallup, our RBs, and Jarwin upgrading over Witten, whoever our slot receiver ends up being is going to end up getting some very favorable matchups.

I like the extensions of Coop and Jarwin. Feel like Brown was a bit costly, but he does give us some continuity at that spot since our other CBs are all FAs at the end of next year.

That being said, the grade is still INC. Can't really judge this early. About this time last night, they landed McCoy. Still, a lot of quality NTs and decent safeties left. A couple of possible pass rushers that probably look just as good to us now, as Quinn would have looked to us last year. Don't really see a CB left that would be anything close to a CB#1, but if we get Henderson in the draft, we are pretty solid there. IF, we get Sanders - hopefully for cheap - our offense should really be clicking next year.

I would have preferred us Signing Dak for whatever, Franchise tagging Cooper and working out that dumb trade and getting Hopkins. Trade Cooper and a 3rd and 5th rounder for Hopkins, re-signing Cobb, and then we could focus the draft completely on defense with a 1st round CB, 3rd round DL and a 4th round safety.

Sure, technically free agency just started, but our team, and the entire league, has made plenty of moves.

Based on who's still here and who's gone, how would you grade the Cowboys so far?

I'd have to give them a B+.

While there are some names I would have liked to see, I also give them credit for keeping Prescott and Cooper. I also give them credit for keeping Forbath at kicker and Looney as a backup interior lineman.

And I think the McCoy signing was an inspired steal.

Still work to be done, but I have to say they've gotten off to a good start.

What say you all?
I'm kinda surprised by your grade Stash, to be honest. I like the re-signings and like the McCoy deal but was hoping for a little more at this point. I guess I would give it a B- at this point.
