It’s safe to assume the Cowboys have enough talent right now on offense to put up points and the front office and coaching staff know we need to build this defense up or we could be in trouble.

So it’s draft night and slowly but surely Kinlaw, CJ Henderson, Derrick Brown, and Chaisson all come off the board before we draft with the 17th pick.

For the sake of conversation let’s just say they aren’t in love with McKinney, Delpit, Fulton or any of the other names that have been mocked to us; however, Ruggs III and CeeDee Lamb are sitting there and the Cowboys FO once again throws a curveball at us and goes with a WR.

Do you take the guy that ran the 4.2, has very good hands, will open up this offense including the running game for a guy that already has 2 rushing titles in 4 season (would’ve been 3 titles) & keep the safeties and CBs from cheating up; Henry Ruggs III:

Or do you take the All-American, Belitnikoff finalist, with an insane college resume & averaged 21.4 yards per catch this past season as the primary target; CeeDee Lamb:

I admit this is a unlikely scenario, but to be completely honest - I wouldn’t put it past the front office, so who are you taking?

I'd take Ceedee. He can play X on a 5 year rookie deal, and would make Amari expendable after 2 years if he dosent show up and be more consistent.
True, and Amari can play the slot; however, Dak likes those underneath throws & Ruggs has the speed and ability to take those to the house (Tyreek Hill clone perhaps?)

Tempting to go Ruggs simply because he’s played in a situation with Jeudy and Smith that would be similar to Amari and Gallup.

But Ceedee Lamb could be a top 5 WR in 2-3 years

I am taking Lamb. Runs great routes, good hands, and is good after the catch. Also if Cooper doesn’t work out you still have him on a rookie deal.

We ought to shy away from spending 1st round picks on WR. QB, OL, DT, OLB/DE or DB only.

It's a sexy temptation to go for WR, RB and LB, but that's a fool's errand. 2nd round, perfectly fine, but not 1st round.

If there's a successor to Amari, it's Gallup. This is a deep draft for WR anyways. Jaelen Reagor or KJ Hamler in Round 2 would be incredible.

The way free agency is going we have to draft defense pretty much the first 4 rounds with all our holes on the defensive line. If the draft goes the way the opening poster says you would have to trade down for extra picks. The Eagles, Ravens, and Patriots have extra draft picks. Those teams would be interested in Lamb or Ruggs.

The real curveball comes when one of those OT's is there and he is clearly the best player on the board .
Not sure it is a curveball with Smith's back, especially since parting ways with him next year saves 11 million on the cap.

It's a curveball in the sense that no one is mocking it or even mentioning it as a possibility.
I have been saying it for awhile now. Our biggest areas of need don't line up well with pick 17. It is likely that the best player left with a 1st rd grade when we pick will be an OT or WR, so we either reach for need, trade back, or take the secondary needs with BPA. Not only do we have Smith's bad back, our swing tackle left in free agency. So unless we are doing some shuffling or are really sold on those UDFA from last year, OT should be considered an option.

Ruggs is a bit of a novelty because he runs about a tenth of a second faster than most.

Lamb is a much better football player and will be a solid #1 at some point.

He will definitely be BPA if there at 17, but he may be our best option overall, because if this offense doesnt put up 40 points every week they have no chance.
