The Cowboys have a very odd way of spending money

No, a few years ago Dallas was great and e logic was for the offense to control the game and wear out the other teams defense, it worked and worked well. Dallas got beat in playoffs by Greenbay, but the season was great. Have to put your money somewhere so Dallas should go all in on offense.
I get the logic behind that, but there’s some really talented players out there that could really help this defense. It’s great to have a high powered offense and put up points but the old cliche goes... defense wins championships.

Its not that odd when you think we have six Pro Bowl players on offense, Lael Collins after a big extension, Jarwin just got an extension and a 2nd round pick at LG.

Gallup and the 2nd TE or FB are literally the only guys on cheap contracts.

First Round Pick Pro Bowlers On Offense
Tyron
Frederick
Martin
Zeke
Cooper (both for us and for the Raiders)

Pro Bowler but not 1st Round Pick
Dak

1st Round quality, no Pro Bowl, but close
La'el

Cheap Starter
Jarwin

I like the online contracts and have come around on Jarwin, though we probably don't do that if we hadn't whiffed on Rico and Schulz.

That's just not their model. We spend big money on our guys, not guys "out there". Out there entails more risk for a big contract. We know our guys.

According to over the cap:

Offense: $122,887,679
Defense: $68,467,757
Space: $24m

Every dollar left needs to be spent on the defense!!

I would tend to agree, but there are some here who insist all you need is offense, "nobody wins SBs on defense", so don't expect everybody to agree with you.

Earlier this afternoon when I wanted to see what we’ve spent - the 2 other teams that I looked at are the Chiefs and 49ers:

Chiefs offense: $111m
Defense: $98m
Why would you do that?

Gee, Dak got franchised and Mahomes is on his rookie deal.

What did you expect to find?

Once Dak's deal gets done, the offensive umber will drop. Once the Cowboys sign more defensive players, the defensive number will rise.

Its still possible we spent 20 or 30MM on CB and DE, then when guys like LVE and the other CBs, maybe Woods, hit their second contracts the offense/defense split will be a lot more even.

So lets be fair about this. What was our breakdown last year when Dak was cheap?

Why? Defense don’t score points on a regular basis throughout the games. We don’t need a top 5/10 defense to win the SB, that’s been proved continually every season. It would be great to have one but not needed.
Oh and Dak doesn’t need top talent to win just a good or great OLINE and reliable receivers but a great RB

wow I knew jones boys prioritized offense, but did not know it was double !
That just shows they will never have a great defense. best you can hope for is a decent defense.
It also means offense has to carry the load, which it rarely has.

Dallas defense has rookie deals galore on it. starters Vander Esch, Awuzie, Lewis, Xavier Woods, Hill. McCoy not expensive, Jaylon not expensive, Dix not expensive, Brown not expensice, Lee not expensive...If they get Snacks he wont be expensive either. The rookies that come in wont be expensive either.

And for 122 million you get an Offense who can only kick field goals against teams over.500.

They hit on numerous OL picks is succession, built a pound and ground identity, and had to pay to keep them all. Then they used 1st round picks on a RB and WR that worked out and had to pay them both. On top of that, a 4th round QB has played well enough that they want to keep him and that adds $30-35 million. There you have it. Maybe not ideal but it beats some of those picks being busts or walking out the door.
So in theory....if we have "hit" on offense at OL, QB, RB, WR....then our offense should be like KC Chiefs....where the offense can cover the warts of the front office, the coaching staff, the defense etc.... This offense cannot. This offense is beyond terrible getting the ball in the endzone once they are in the redzone.

His cap hit is only 10.9m this year and he’s the best running back in football.
I don’t care if he’s the best RB in football, that doesn’t mean his salary is worth it. We also have one of the best O lines in football, we could have done just as much with a much cheaper RB like most Super Bowl winning teams who build their teams properly.

Name me the last time a team who had the best RB in football paid them the most for their position and won a Super Bowl. IMOF, I’ll make it easier, name me how many times a team with the league leading rusher has won a Super Bowl in the past twenty years and try to tell me Zeke’s contract is worth it just because he’s the “best”. BTW, last year he wasn’t the best and was arguably barely top 5.

However much a team is under the cap limit to date or how much is spent on offense, defense and special teams isn't set in stone yet.

Dak for example is probably the largest hit at $ 33 million right now for this upcoming season since the tag is a fully guaranteed one year contract. But if the Cowboys work out a new contract within the allowable time frame his impact on the cap will be appreciably less. All teams can't be over the cap at the start of the league regular season which in 2020 is Sept. 10 barring corona virus implications.

They’ve been doing it this way for years. And it’s cost us post season berths on more than one occasion.
