Which was the best era of Cowboys football: the 70s or the 90s?

90s. I miss the 90s in general.

Miss being a little kid watching Duck Tales and TaleSpin. I vaguely remember my elementary school implementing Cowboy days during the 90s Super Bowl run. We would have pizza parties in class. Damn I miss pizza parties.

I've been a Cowboys fan since their very first day and for me there are two reasons I say the 90's. Actually it's one reason that caused the second reason. With being the first team to winning the Super Bowl 3 out of 4 years and losing none is the primary reason. The second reason is because of that the media started to refer to the 90's as the Cowboys dynasty. The 70's Cowboys were never referred to as a dynasty. As much as I hate it the steelers were/are referred to as the dynasty of the 70's.

The 70's for longevity, but I think the 90's were better teams.
No way in my opinion with a better teams in the 90s. Compared to the Manster Starbuck Too tall to many great names. Too many great games compared to the 90s

I never wanted to beat a team like the Steelers so bad. Definitely 60s 70s

This is true with any comparison of completely different eras though. The 1996 Patriots would sweep every Cowboys, Steelers and Dolphins team of the 1970s, even though they were a marginal Super Bowl team of the 1990s.

Why bring those bums in, on a Cowboys thread?

I don’t believe you meant 1996 Patriots. 2006? Even then, I’m not so sure the 2006 Patriots would beat the 92 or 93 Dallas teams. Those two eras were no where near as different as the 70’s compared to the 90’s. The players in 2006 were no bigger than the ones in the 90’s.

Woof, you guys are really misreading my post.

My point was that it's kind of meaningless to say the 90s Cowboys would beat the 70s Cowboys, because any decent 90s team would probably beat any 70s team, even the great ones. The average level of athlete was so much higher by the 90s that it's apples and oranges.

I didn't say anything about the 2000s Patriots vs. any of the Cowboys teams. My guess is the peak 90s Cowboys would whip just about any Super Bowl team from 2000+ because the cap doesn't make assembling those kinds of 90s super teams even possible anymore.

The Baby Boom generation got to see both the 70s era and the 90s era. The 70s gave us the consistently dominating - but sometimes disappointing - Cowboys that won 2 of 5 Super Bowls and established the great tradition we enjoy today. The 90s gave us the brash and dominating Cowboys who talk trashed and backed in up on the field.

So which era do you think is the best?

With all due respect to Tom Landry, who I respect and had the privilege of interviewing prior to his death, I have to give it to 90s Cowboys.
The 70s teams could pull a victory out of the grips of defeat, but could also lose a winnable game as well.
The 90s teams were simply dominating and feared in a way I don't think the 70s Cowboys were. I never expected them to lose. I always felt they would find a way to win. Too bad the era was short-lived.

What say ye?
The two decades contained excellent players and coaches, and their exploits have been succinctly described in previous posts.
I grew up with the Cowboys, and the 70's teams were my favorites. Landry's innovation and resilience guided the team through one of the most successful runs the NFL has ever seen.
Hats off to Johnson and the triplets, et al, but their success was short lived.

Agree to disagree. The 90's rosters were stacked top to bottom. The coaching staff was remarkable. The 70's teams were great for longer.

you have to ask the old timers ... er, i mean old schoolers here about the 70's - especially those who were fortunate to watch every Cowboys game in the 70's and
actually go to the games at the old Cotton Bowl atmosphere,- which i heard was far more lively and crowd supportive than Texas Stadium in Irving,

I was born in 1985 the 90's is why I THINK I am a Cowboys fan. But at one time when I was a complete NFL junkie I watched as much as possible on the Cowboys 70's teams. 70's Era is the best and its not even close. You have a war hero and all tie great QB in Roger Staubach and an all time best Coach in Tom Landry. And football in the 70's was real football.
Staubach in my opinion makes this an easy decision. He was an absolute Icon and a real hero. Sports players should not be Hero's but Veterans should absolutely be considered heroes. Roger Staubach is a real life hero. He is why the Cowboys are America's Team. Staubach is why the Cowboys are the Cowboys.

Texas Stadium could be lively at times, but it was not generally known for boisterous cheering. I remember watching Dan Reeves basically win a game there against San Francisco, and the crowd went nuts! Maybe the acoustics kept it more quiet. Watching Dandy Don throw bombs to Bob Hayes in the Cotton Bowl was fabulous. I haven't been to Jerry World yet due to being too far away.

The competition in the 70s. With so much greater than just Buffalo. The NFC championship game is better than the Super Bowl in the 90s. But be good be safe my cowboy brother family

I live near Buffalo. I can't wait to use this! Lol.

Shorter season and less teams? ;)
