Maher was released (too late obviously) because he wasn't very good. Doesn't mean he cost us any games though. The absurdly stupid original post makes it sound like for 100% certain we would have been 11-5 with a different kicker. At worst I would say, as some others have, that he certainly didn't help their cause at times and missed some really deflating kicks.

I don't think it would have been 11-5 but I do think it could have been at least 10-6 or at least 9-5. Yes Maher against the jets made two long field goals and then missed a short one, that recurring bad thing. Then against the patriots he missed a field goal that at the end of the game instead of needing a TD to win they would have only needed a field goal to win. All of last seasons whose weren't because of Maher but he definitely added to them.

Maher didn't miss any FG in the NO game where we lost 12-10 and he wasn't the kicker when we played the Eagles in week 16 where if we win we are in and we lost 17-9. Yes he missed some FG;s during the season he was not the only reason, our offense as a whole lost a lot of games for us too

He was 3-4 in both games. Literally every other kicker in the league would have been 3-4 at best in the first game, and in the second game he literally scored all of the points. I think we can find someone else to pin those losses on.

So if Jerry meddles, why didn't he make Garrett release Maher and get any other K in there.

I agree. To me it is like saying a fumble in the redzone coming away with no points did not hurt you in the game. Dallas marches down field taking time off the clock in the process, miss the FG come away with no points and turning the ball over too the opponent. To say Maher directly cost us would not exactly be true but coming away with no points on short FG puts you in a bad situation. In the end Dallas did the right thing letting him go.

He cost them plenty. In broader terms, Maher has a cannon of a leg and changed the way JG coaches as a result. More specifically, he missed short fg which resulted in losses (Jets), missed a few long ones that Garrett would normally pass on which in turn screwed the Cowboys in field position which was something that plagued them all year.

Missed 57 yd FG in the Vikings game. If that is what Maher is good at, he needs to make that fg. Anyone else, Garrett would with either have punted or went for it. Gives the ball to the Vikings at almost mid field who proceed to walk down the field and score. Dallas lost by four, but were driving inside of one min and would have kicked a short fg to win if Maher makes the fg.

Missed 40yd FG at the Jets. I don't care he made a long fg, that is what he is good at. There were a number of drops as well in that game, but the kicker missed an easy one, short term it flipped the field again and ultimately ended up being the difference in a two point game.

Buffalo. Misses two easy fg, the second one takes it from being a 17-13 game with momentum to 17-6 and Buffalo getting the ball on the 35yd who than walk down the field and score a td to put the game away. Dallas was flat that day no doubt, but the kicker never gave them a chance to find there groove.

Great post and facts brother , I would like to add these missed opportunities did nothing for team moral and put our struggling defense at an unmanageable disadvantage .

To me it's about field position and momentum. Our offense was at the bottom of starting field position. Our special teams units were horrible. Starting off at the 10 doesn't help the offense. Missing a FG gives the opposing team a large advantage. Sure the offense could do better, but until you admit that the defense and special teams left us at a disadvantage you're simply being biased.

I can’t believe there’s supposed football fans out there who don’t realize special teams is important to winning games.

Who don’t believe field position is important to winning games.

It is mind numbing.

Hey super Maher fan I didn't say anything about either the saints or eagles games. I also said that Maher wasn't to only be blamed for the 8-8 season but he does hold some blame.

It's the fact that he missed on the shorter kicks that most kickers hit on much more consistent basis.

That doesn't mean he cost us any games... it's an excuse by Dak slobberers and Garrett apologists (not you) to shift blame.

Put it another way, if we started off the season with a league average kicker instead of Maher and everything else plays out exactly the same, which games do we 100% sure win?

My memory is better than this, but I purposely try to forget, and was boozing it more and more during the Garrett ERA lol....

But was it the Vikings game when Garrett tried a 60 yarder on the first drive of the game??

Risk vs reward there is beyond not worth it. Princeton genius huh??

The average fan could have managed games better than Garrett.

Cant just add 3-6 points on to the final score.

A MFG after a drive is a momentum changer.

Theres no way to calculate all that, but momentum in games is huge, and deflated the team many times.

So your right you didn't bring up the Saints or Eagles games at which is why i did. If you are going to so say we could have been at least 10-6 or 9-5 (i assume thats a typo and you meant 9-7) then it is fair to say had our offense played better against the Saints and Eagles (2 games where FG's didn't make the difference) then we could have also been 10-6 or 9-7. Don't be so thin skinned when someone points out something else you didn't comment on

That's an impossible thing to answer. If the games were played with a different kicker who's to say that in those games many of the drops by receivers didn't happen and the Cowboys scored more TD's and won outright or Elliott doesn't have 6 games where he rushed for 60 or fewer yards for the game, one for only 35 yards. I don't play Dave Demashek.

Of course in most NFL games were the outcome is determined by 7 or less points in the majority of the time every point counts. I tend not to put a loss directly on 1 person, there are several plays within a game each contribute to wins and loses. As Jimmy Johnson once said often it is not who makes the most plays who win but the team who makes the fewest mistakes will win. Mistakes like turnovers, failed 3rd down conversions, penalties and miss FG all are negative plays that can contribute to a loss.

This isn't new, but keeping him was JJ doing. I recall halfway into the season JG said they was looking at more kickers. Then JJ came in and place that to rest. Same way they hired a clueless ST coach.

Do you think Jerry would come in now and overrule MM about a kicker? Never. Having a puppet and loser like Garret was the big problem. You are a puppet for a reason.
