Looney is not good. He is a backup, a decent short term fill in, at best. Despite people praising him for not being a complete disaster, we were 31st in the NFL in sacks allowed, didn’t run the ball as well inside, and pressure was always coming up the middle.
What was Looney’s PFF grade in 2018? How many sacks did he allow in 2018 compared to Frederick 2019? Real question.

I agree. I mean you expect a 3rd round pick to develop into a starter anyway.
Actually the success rate for OL's drafted in the 3rd round and becoming a starter is only 40%. Old stats but still interesting.

1st Round - OL (83%) LB (70%) TE (67%) DB (64%) QB (63%) WR (58%) RB (58%) DL (58%)
2nd Round - OL (70%) LB (55%) TE (50%) WR (49%) DB (46%) QB (27%) DL (26%) RB (25%)
3rd Round - OL (40%) TE (39%) LB (34%) DL (27%) WR (25%) DB (24%) QB (17%) RB (16%)
4th Round - DL (37%) TE (33%) OL (29%) LB (16%) WR(12%) DB (11%) RB (11%) QB (8%)
5th Round - TE (32%) DB (17%) WR (16%) OL (16%) DL (13%) RB (9%) LB (4%) QB (0%)
6th Round - TE (26%) OL (16%) DL (13%) WR (9%) DB (8%) RB (6%) LB (5%) QB (0%)
7th Round - DB (11%) OL (9%) QB (6%) WR (5%) DL (3%) LB (2%) RB (0%) TE (0%)

i dont think we will draft a c in this draft.
we did last year with connor mcgovern.
not having 72....and wanting to get a player better than Looney...is what led to drafting mcgovern...in my opinion.
can he do the job?
we'll find out...they drafted him for a reason.
its mcgovern vs looney...winner take all.

I think other decisions, likely defensive ones, may dominate the early rounds of the draft.

After that, it's a doubtful proposition, at best, that a starting center could be acquired.

Sturm didn't credit a sack against him in 2018. Now line callouts he is no Frederick.

Was his 2nd highest rated offensive lineman behind Martin.

In 494 snaps, Su’a-Filo allowed seven sacks – a very high number for a guard – and, combined with Connor Williams and Adam Redmond, Dallas left guards conceded 15.5 sacks, which must be some sort of NFL record for most allowed by a position that normally doesn’t concede many.

The issue inside, in terms of play, was the LG spot.

He must a be Connor Williams homeboy

Nah. He ripped into him and thought he would be best as maybe a tackle in that article.
He was nice about Xsf and commended him on playing through injury. But mentioned after his injury he struggled.
Basically at the time of the article (may19) he was good with Smith but was concerned about his OL leading 10 penalties, LG guys struggled, Looney was good , Martin was Martin and Collins struggled again.

I agree. I mean you expect a 3rd round pick to develop into a starter anyway. It doesn’t mean McGovern won’t be a bust. But it’s not unreasonable to think that he could become the long term starter either.

And *they* (and others) considered him a 2nd round pick.

If we picked him this year in the draft, in the 3rd round, we'd be saying:
"Great Deal! Got a starting quality center in the 3rd round!"

But unlike a pick, he's spent a year with the team already and should have already adjusted his plans to train up for C.

The more I thought about it, I agree it should not change their draft plans. Unless a C is the BPA.

A C draft pick needs to be BPA *and* a significant improvement over McGovern.

With this year's draft being reportedly poor on centers, and McGovern getting at least some experience and training with the Cowboys, he could very be a well a better option than any of the other C's this year straight up.

The other possibility - if they'd like to move Williams to swing G/T, maybe they draft a C or G that falls to pair with McGovern as 2 new interior oline starters.

We could be drafting that Swing T too.

IMO, we were fantastically set before Frederick retired. Now I feel we're light one quality backup olineman.

How funny. McGovern is now listed as a C at Spotrac.

The stats I posted without Fred in the retirement thread say otherwise. While there may not be a 1st rd center in this draft they better find one somewhere. While Looney is more than adequate as a proven backup and depth player he is not adept at play setting and starting long term. As for McGov, hard to rely on a player who didn’t even make the field last year. With all the limitations in the draft and FA just a major blow to the team and more specifically Dak and Zeke.

while his retirement was a major kick to the balls..LETS BE CLEAR, we will be fine. Lets at least give the front office and staff credit for having the wherewithal to have a contingency plan for this. Did they suspect or even know THIS might happen??? I think yes. Thus, we resigned Looney...drafted Connor McGovern. IMO, smart moves. Either Stephen is a savant, or he knew something in advance. The latter is the most likely.

I still don't understand the Connor Williams pick

His draft profile was literally word for word "freshman year amazing, didn't look that great sophmore year and then injured junior year. Whoever drafts him better hope that 1. you get the freshman version and 2. that he can transition to guard because he's most likely not going to be a starting tackle in the league"

That's like the draft profile of a 4th or 5th round project, how the hell was he rated as borderline first round talent ? (3 star highschool recruit with only 1 high level college season and then doubt that he can even play the position he plays)

Looney’s stats were terrible. It has been posted on this board a couple times and he was really bad compared to the rest of the centers in the league.
