I liked Awuzie coming out of college.

I am hoping that he shows significant progress this year as it would take a lot of pressure off the secondary.

Byron Jones: Dallas' lack of interest had to do with CBs on roster, not money - ProFootballTalk

It became obvious long ago that the Cowboys wouldn't be able to keep Byron Jones. With Amari Cooper and Dak Prescott also having their contracts expire after the 2019 season, Dallas had to set its priorities. The priority wasn't Jones.

<snip>

But in a conference call with Dolphins writers Thursday, the cornerback said he thinks the Cowboys’ lack of interest in re-signing him had more to do with the other players the team has at the position than the money they don’t have.

“I don’t think so,” Jones said when asked if Cooper and Prescott’s returns was the reason he didn’t. “One thing that the Dallas Cowboys do a really good job at is drafting good, young players, and they have a whole bunch of good corners on that team – no question about that – and those guys will be just fine without me. But they believe strongly in the way they draft, and they’ve shown over the years they draft some freaking ballers no matter [if it is the] first round, seventh round, guys in between. They draft and develop really good players, so I don’t think the Dak and Amari’s situation had any effect on me. I think it’s their confidence in the people that they have on the roster now and who they’re going to get in the draft hopefully.”

This is EXACTLY what I am talking about. The Cowboys were certain last year that they weren't going to resign Jones. So why not trade him like the Lions just did? With a year left on his contract they possibly get a 2nd rounder.

It clearly had to do with both. If money were no object they would have kept Jones, but if they didn’t have 3 other CB’s that have logged significant playing time they would likely have found the money.

Its pretty clear to me they are using a first or second rounder on a CB.

Dont be surprised if Byron Jones is a politician once his NFL career is over. One of the sharpest, most well spoken players i have ever seen. Wish him the best in Miami.

From everything I read he is an incredibly intelligent person. So he could pull it off I’m sure.

I like Byron but no way Dallas was going to pay him the 2nd highest CB money that Miami did

5 year, $82,500,000 contract with the Miami Dolphins, including a $15,000,000 signing bonus, $54,375,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $16,500,000. In 2020, Jones will earn a base salary of $11,000,000 and a signing bonus of $15,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $14,000,000 and a dead cap value of $46,000,000.

He can say it was not about the money but I'm not buying it.

I like Byrons attitude as well- why be upset with the Cowboys? They basically helped turn him into a potential bust at safety into the highest paid corner in the league with that position switch. He is and should be eternally grateful to the Cowboys.

We never try and get a return on an investment,, that's Bills gig in NE,, maybe MM will somehow change that thought process here.. fingers crossed.

The defense was terrible even WITH this dude. He's obviously good, but Dallas needs to shore up other defensive positions first

Get a top DL and rush the QB, get pressure consistently, then the DB's we have now will be better. I guess it is like the chicken and the egg though to some.

Better pass rush helps the DB's, better DB's helps the pass rush. Give me the better pass rush guys that can also stop the run.

I can't say anything bad about him. He did his job here, played pretty well. Solid but rarely if ever elevated his game.
I can't remember the last time a big Cowboy FA left and was worth the money the new team paid. Maybe he will be the first. I doubt it though.

Most FA's from all teams rarely is the big difference maker. Maybe a combination of FA's plus draft picks plus coaching makes the difference, but not 1 player. Well not too many times. Maybe when we traded for Haley, but other players were in place or was drafted also.

But agree, no player left us and made a huge impact wherever the went.

I betcha in his first year with Miami, Jones will eclipse his interception total while here in Dallas.

Well, talk about setting low bars. He may have to stay healthy for a whole season just to eclipse in game 16. Good chance some tipped balls fall his way. I'd say his chances increase because he will go against Josh Allen, Sam Darnold, and whatever the Pats trot out there at QB twice a year.

I would bet that his interceptions will not decrease in Miami when compared to his days as a Cowboy. Pretty much impossible.

Setting the bar low? The complaint around here is that he never gets interception. He's a great cover corner; otherwise, Miami wouldn't have made him the highest-paid corner in the league. But the knock on him is that he doesn't make interceptions. Anything above 2 in 5 years will be great. And it could be indicative of scheme if he achieves more than 2 in 5 years - definitely 3 in one year, as I predict.
As for the quarterback he's playing, don't expect any tears from the NFC East which had Colt McCoy, Dwayne Haskins, Kirk Cousins, Alex Smith, an old Eli Manning and an injured Carson Wentz serving up ducks Byron Jones couldn't catch. At least Allen and Darnold are ascending quarterbacks. ;)
