Didnt Landry draft Troy Technically?

Yes was just thinking that.

My father-in-law. Even after his daughter and I divorced, still treated me like a son, as we still went to Cowboys games and went to have some beers together. He went to his grave swearing Landry was the guy who actually picked Troy.

Even though Jimmy was hired that February before the draft. I just let him think that.

No Landry was fired in February as soon as Jerry bought the team.

Rest assured, I think Troy was going to be a Cowboy no matter what the outcome of that situation was.

Yes but the 3-13 record from 1988, allowed Jimmy to be in that position. :D

I remember, a friend and I at work, high 5's all around when we came into work Monday morning. That the Cowboys lost and GB won, so we got the 1st pick.
We said right away, we won the Troy Aikman sweepstakes.

If GB would have lost, we would have pick 2nd and got Tony "steroid" Mandrich. Huge bust for GB.

Back then, if you had the number one overall pick you could actually declare who you were going to pick and get the contract done BEFORE the draft. That's what happened.

Man, seeing that video of Troy yelling at the coaches/players because of laziness during games after Jimmy left tells me what kind of a leader he is. He was doing Jimmy's job after he left. I'm sure he and Jimmy spoke often immediately after Jimmy left. And Bozo says this team could win with out a coach. What an ***.

Switzer was a sock puppet...he had no desire to coach...he was along for the ride,PERIOD.

That was the case up to the early 2000's as well. Felt like ages ago this happened

The Miami Dolphins were grinning Tuesday, too. They signed the Michigan left tackle to a five-year, $57.75 million contract with $30 million guaranteed, and they'll select him with the top pick in the draft Saturday.

Did it go away with the 2011 CBA? Or did teams just want to milk it?

Troy was absolutely going to be the pick for Schram/Landry/Brandt. Landry had attended Aikman's practices prior to his last game in the Cotton Bowl.

One thing that made Jimmy successful was bringing in competition no matter how good you were. Jimmy always said that you have to produce some level of uncertainty and discomfort to get the best out of your players. This is why he drafted Walsh.

He's worked with Bradshaw for over 20years...
from what i have read him and bradshaw are close friends and have been for many of those 20 years.
They could have made a good coach and GM partnership for some team, probably too old now, but 10-15 years ago
think they could have built a very good team for some owner smart enough to hire them away from network.
But none of the owners ever thought of that.

Jimmy was also unsure enough about Troy that he used a 1st round pick on Steve Walsh. Of course, I'm sure that's ancient history for both of them now.
Jimmy wanted Troy in college and Troy turned him down. Jimmy told Troy prior to the draft "I'm drafting you and you can't turn me down now."
