If it comes to it. I think the NFL could just play games in empty stadiums.

Yes they would lose a lot of money on ticket sales/merchandise/etc. but it would be loss of a loss than having nothing. Still plenty of money to mane on Tv contracts, gambling, etc.

Plus I would imagine most players, given their limited time to make money want to miss a year of game checks.

A lot of sporting events are being canceled or postponed. The summer Olympics have been postponed until next summer. Wimbledon has been canceled. The NFL may be proceeding as if this will be a normal season with fans in attendance but that remains to be seen.

Hopefully it works out, and hopefully we don't run into a relapse of the pandemic when the weather cools down again.
A virus is not a living thing, just a piece of dna/RNA and a protein shell. It can only exist with a host cell. The circumstances of colder weather, runny noses, more sneezing and coughing are the reasons vital infections are greater in cooler weather. The virus doesn't care about the weather.

Aren't flu cases more prevalent in colder weather?

Yes, but the spread is due to runny noses, etc..it typically starts with young children who bring it home to their parents and siblings. But in tropical climates it's a 12 month a year occurrence.
