Harsh crowd. Nothing wrong with seeing what the guy has. A cheap swing for the fences, I’m quite fine with it, kid deserves a chance.

Why does he “deserve a chance”? Guy is a scumbag who has had tons of chances and he’s blown them all. If JJ wants to give him a shot, that’s the owner’s prerogative but Smith is owed nothing.

Domestic violence and alcohol issues.

I mean, I get trying to get value out of an once talented player, but this guy has some serious baggage and hasn't played in ages...

Thank you for sharing this video, it was very informative.

The DV really bothers me, that's the one thing that's hard for me to get past.

I'm hoping first that he's really turned his life around and secondly that he can still be a force.

Where is he penciled in as the starter? I haven’t seen that anywhere... I have heard talk of Crawford coming back. Tyrone would more than likely be your starting RDE.

Now if Smith or Gregory outperform him during camp— then maybe there is a change. But for now— this move is what it is:

Tomsula reuniting with a former player, and Grandpa Jerry giving another troubled kid a chance at redemption.
I meant it that he is the best rde on the roster. Crawford isn't a pass rusher from the weak side, he provides no benefit from that spot

As you didn't know, TALENT always prevails in this world.

I'm skeptical on this move. He has not played since 2015 so how much can we really expect from him? His off the field issues are also a big concern. Only positive is it is a 1 year prove it deal, outside of that it falls to Smith to come in and prove himself.

If his deeds match his words, we're in great shape.

Did we learn nothing from Greg Hardy?

at least the contract is cheap but those past transgressions are hard to look past

Nobody said he was,, but maybe MM is deserving of a chance, a chance to actually roll his own pair of dice in order to somehow rebuild a defense that was left totally devastated by Marienlli, the defensive juggernaut genius?
Seriously doubt that even Jerry is brazen enough to invest so much in a radical over all restructure of the coaching staff, and totally leave MM and staff out of the decision making process.
I may be naïve at times, but I cant even believe that .

Here I thought this crap was over. Glad the Dallas Cowboys are still a rehab facility than a football organization.

Should've let Clowney sweat another week. Dude be a Cowboy by mid April. Course, who knows if there will even be a season.

Seems like a no risk move given no guaranteed money up front.

When I said peculiar signing earlier, I had forgotten Smith had played with Tomsula in San Fran. They made this move, obviously, based on input from Tomsula, so I guess it's worth a flier.

I found a very telling quote from Tomsula on releasing Smith, Tomsula was the 49'ers head coach at the time:

"It's a sad day. This is a day that doesn't have anything to do with football. Although [Smith] won't be playing football for the San Francisco 49ers, he will be supported and helped and he will not have to walk this path alone. That comes from our ownership down. He will not have to walk this path alone. We're not worried about football. It has nothing to do with football.

I understand the platform that we are on, I understand where this goes in the news. And what I would like to say is, if one person out there reads this, and you're struggling, get help. Go get it. You're worth it. You're worth it. There's value in every human being. Get the help. You don't have to walk alone. Find it, it's there. And although Aldon will not be playing football here, we will be supporting him. He will not be alone."

Kudos to Coach Tomsula. He clearly meant what he said.

Go back and read what he said. He said he hates the team, roots for their failure and hopes they go 3-13.

If that qualifies someone to be a “huge fan”, then our fan base is in the toilet
Ok....but none of us get to decide who needs to cheer for some other team.

From what I’ve read he’s had a chance, in fact he’s had several.
It’s his fourth chance. I don’t have a problem with someone recovering from alcohol or drug problems getting second chances. But domestic violence? That’s where I don’t like this move.

Aldon Smith’s mountain of legal issues (from yahoo sports)

Here’s a rundown of the breathtaking amount of off-field issues Smith has encountered since entering the NFL:
