Who Would You Rather Have as the Backup 3T?

I see ya. Mike McCarthy is on record saying he wants 10DL with 4 DT’s and 6 pass rushers. McCoy and Poe start and Woods is basically guaranteed to be the backup 1T. This leaves only 1 DT roster spot.

Yeah they could circumvent that by designating Crawford an end, but who will we be sacrificing in the process? If Randy and Aldon are reinstated and can play, you basically lock in 5 DE’s (RG, Aldon, Lawrence, Crawford, Armstrong). Then you got Jelks/Jackson/Draft Pick fighting over 1 spot. Again, if Hill doesn’t show more than them, I’m not willing to cut any of those DE’s for Trystan. I would much rather move Crawford to a DT designation, while keeping 2 of Jackson/Jelks/Draftee. In this scenario, my roster goes:

DE: DLaw, Armstrong, Gregory, Smith, Jackson, Jelks
DT: Poe, McCoy, Woods, Crawford

I understand this. However, my issue is with, and it is only my opinion. I was never high on Jackson and Jelks, and Armstrong was showing something, but still at times never really stepped up either.

Also need to remember these were Rod's guys. MM may never have selected them for his style of defense. Will make an interesting TC though with all the competition.

I'd rather Hill be able to handle that position at this point.

But in reality...based on what we've seen thus far? I'd rather have Crawford there. As its currently constructed.....Crawford does bring some depth at DT and end......

We at least have question marks about Aldon Smith, Gregory and Hill. That's 3 of our linemen. Two of them have to get reinstated and 1 of them simply has to show a pulse that he can contribute consistently.

I think this is Crawford's value to the team. So many questions at the other spots. IF Smith and Gregory are good to go and Hill takes a big step or we draft a DT early, then we don't need him, but if any of those things do not happen, then at least we have him as our floor. Can you imagine if McCoy goes down and we would have to rely on Hill as our 3T? Yuck.

My personal opinion is that Hill wold have to completely flame out to lose his roster spot to Jelks. Jelks is currently an afterthought 7th round draft pick that spent the year on IR.

It looks like we’re going with a veteran DL this year so I imagine Crawford to get a lot of playing time at DT and DE. It looks like Armstrong and Hill will have to fight for playing time. They’re currently 7th and 8th on the DL depth chart.

Gotchu, I’m high on Jelks he was on IR as a stash, he wouldn’t have made it to the practice squad.

He has great tools to be effective in 3/4-4/3 shifting team. I remember Marinelli wanted him to get up to 275-280 and get in the exact mold of the DE’s he likes. At 6’5 260 he’s a natural stand up pass rusher with length and quickness, he’s a perfect fit for what they wanna do. All he needed to add was strength and technique, the former of which he probably did all season as a stash on IR.

Randy, Aldon, Jelks all have the same traits of the ‘Elephant’ position. I think that’s what they want in their DE’s based on the context clues.

I agree with you on what they're looking for and going to be implementing on defense. I think that there will be far more blitzing and five defenders coming on a more regular basis, one of them often being that stand up designed pass rusher. Longer, leaner, faster than what we've grown used to.

Hopefully, your guy Jelks can find his role there this year.

Crawford or Hill?

I still feel like Crawford gets restructured but can’t be positive. Though he’s the better player right now, his price tag may be too high for a depth guy. He could also be the de facto starter at RDE for his run defense so that factors in to the value.

Hill is cheaper but nothing gives me the hope he’s going to outplay TCraw. I wouldn’t be mad at throwing him on the PS, don’t think any teams will poach him. Yeah it’s a bad look for a 2nd round pick but who cares if our Dline is as good as it can be.

if you're throwing Trysten Hill a 2nd round drat pick, on the practice squad then that means you;re basically cutting him, ..and giving up on him -as he's up for grabs to any other NFL team.

If Crawford was given a chance to develop when he was drafted, ..why shouldn't Hill be given similar opportunity under a new and improved defensive coaching staff ?
We know the limits of Crawford at this point, we do not know what beholds for Hill the 2nd time around.
And he's not even worthy of a backup depth DT vs one that is cut and exposed to the practice squad ?
is this based off how Marinelli sought to put him on the back burner for virtually all of his rookie year? (game day inactive)

That may apparently be how you and probably several others are seeing and measuring Hill at this point
-and to each his own, but i want to see what Hill does under a new (and improved) coaching regime, before i see Hill differently..and entirely for sure.

Hill was a raw rookie coming from a small college school where he saw limited time due to questionable coaching but apparently flashed enough to impress McClay and his scout team to load him up as a 2nd rd. draft pick (and yes, McClay draft board determines if Hill is a 2nd rd draftee- Not Marinelli)

-To add to matters, Marinelli didnt see enough of an impression to allow him ample enough reps and playing time for Hill to properly develop, and now we have a
small college DT with small experience at Central Florida, and then he further gets smaller NFL experience so i can see why he wont be as prepared and ready to go as he needs to be this summer.

- If Trysten is virtually red shirted by Marinelli, and void of very valuable game experience, i don't see how he can and will be a likely to be an overnight success in just camp alone. He really needs an extensive full season of contributing regularly that he never got from Marinelli.

- i actually hope there would not only be competition vs Antuawnn woods on depth chart but hopeful an eventually heir apparent young 1 tech who has promising combination for size, power and athleticism, i tend to be concerned if Poe gets dinged for a lengthy period, and Woods has proved woefully inconsistent
and average too many times. But because he's a vested vet, cheap and at least one last year on his contract, they may carry Antwuann as a vet depth guy.

Mike McCarthy: "I want 6 rushers and I want 4 inside players (on the defensive line). ... We're going to score points, so we better have enough pass rushers on our team because we're going to be in those kinds of games. ... It's fun to score 35 points every game, but it's hard."

Mike McCarthy: "When you're throwing away good players because they don't fit your system, you got to take a hard look at your system. If the guy is a good football player, he can play for me.

Hill - backup 3-Tech.
Crawford - Penciled in as the Starting RDE, until otherwise removed. Neither Smith or Gregory have even been reinstated yet. If and when they do, and you get to see them practise, let alone play then the coaches can decide the rotation. Until then or someone is drafted 1st or 2and round. Crawford has to be your defacto starter.

Tyronne Crawford...because right now I don't trust Trysten Hill.

or just give me Tcu's Ross Blacklock or Ohio St's Davon Hamilton.
