How would you feel if the Cowboys took QB Jalen Hurts early?

Rumors persist...this could be the case...

https://www.profootballrumors.com/2020/04/nfc-notes-slay-eagles-hurts-cowboys-ifedi-bears

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For me personally...It would be a little rich...to spend that kind of coin...2nd or 3rd...but if he was sitting there in round 5 or 6....I could see the value having a guy that could an "X" factor in your offense.

Comments?....

We need to find 3 starters with the first 3 picks, Maybe if he falls to us in the 4th

It would be a tall order to expect any incoming QB in a draft class (even the blue chippers at the top of the draft) to play as well as Dak has.

A passer rating of 97? (with a floor, so far, of 86.6)

A TD-to-INT ratio of 2-3 touchdowns for every INT? (with his floor, so far, being the year he scored 28 touchdowns and threw 13 picks)

A .625 win percentage? (with a floor, so far, of .500)

Even if you have the #1 overall pick in recent years, recent history says you're picking a QB who you'll spend years trying to coax that kind of performance out of them.

You don't seem to understand the "QB Savior" complex.

Guys like Darnold and Mayfield suffer from this where guys like Dak, Alex Smith and Jalen Hurts are game managers and they know and are comfortable with that role..

If Hurts were to be drafted to a bad team in need of savior, he would bust, but if Hurts was to be drafted here and asked to drive the bus he would excel.

Dak on almost any other team would be just another Tyrod Taylor/Jacoby Brissett.

The smart move would be to draft hurts but we will see..

just had this thought. last year we drafted another rb besides pollard. both of us thought he'd end up being the better player and make the team. but he went the way of bo scarborough and pollard proved to be the best player. perhaps we're wrong from time to time. :)
Wrong?

Wrong?

Do you know 'wrong' spelled backwards..

Gnorw..

is still 'wrong'.

Just playing.

He wasn't. Do the research.

Dak passed downfield. Hurts dumped high % passes to RB's and TE's.

Jalen is not skilled. He is a terrible passer.

And dumping generally leads to lower yards per attempt, but again Hurts was higher than Dak? Look I like Dak, but he was a raw passer coming out of college. Hurts will be drafted higher because of his talent, which is raw too. Is he as good of a passer as Dak right now? No, but coming out of college I think most would rate Jalen higher and statistics say Dak wasn't more accurate. That's a fact and not a jaded view.

  1. https://***USER-BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1***/college/Oklahoma_logo.gif Jalen Hurts*, QB, Oklahoma
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 222. Arm: 31.88. Hand: 9.5.
    40 Time: 4.59. Projected Round (2020): 3-5.

4/4/20: Hurts put together a good workout at the combine, showing a quality arm, speed and athleticism. He completed 70 percent of his passes in 2019 for 3,851 yards with 32 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Some team sources see Hurts as a late-round pick while others think Hurts is a mid-rounder. ESPN and other media outlets hyped Hurts all season, but in speaking to some sources, they feel Hurts struggles to read defenses, too often after one read he looks to run, is not that accurate, and is not a dynamic runner for the NFL. They feel Hurts is tough and a winner, so they could see a team taking him in the mid-rounds if a team really likes him and wants to work with him as a backup quarterback who might be able to contribute, somewhat like Taysom Hill in New Orleans. Some feel Hurts should move to fullback for the NFL, but Hurts has refused to work out at any position but quarterback. His struggles to see the field were given further proof at the Senior Bowl.

8/15/19: Hurts had a lot of success at Alabama, helping the program to some huge wins during his career with the team, but he really struggled as a pocket passer, which led to him becoming a backup. In 2018 as a backup, Hurts completed 73 percent of his passes for 765 yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions. In 2017, he completed 61 percent of his passes for 2,081 yards with 17 touchdowns an interception. As a freshman, Hurts completed 63 percent of his passes for 2,780 yards with 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
***************

PASS...especially if the Cowboys are thinking of using a costly mid-round pick on Hurts as a backup. Use that mid-round pick on a position more in need, especially since the Cowboys recently gave current backup QB, Cooper Rush, an extension.

Instead, the Cowboys should use a late round pick on this QB for backup and development:

  1. https://***USER-BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1***/college/Hawaii_logo.gif Cole McDonald, QB, Hawaii
    Height: 6-3. Weight: 215. Hand: 9.75.
    40 Time: 4.54. Projected Round (2020): 5-7.
4/4/20: McDonald had a quality combine performance that displayed his decent athleticism and an arm to compete at the next level. As a senior, he completed 64 percent of his passes for 4,135 yards with 33 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. In 2018, McDonald completed 59 percent of his passes for 3,875 yards with 36 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

I like that idea, Cole would be a great late round QB for MM to groom.

Hurts' stats are greatly helped by facing the horrible Big XII defenses this past season. The conference that inflates the stats of many QBs.

Jalen Hurts cannot play QB. He doesn’t have the anticipation or the accuracy or ability to read defenses that it takes to be successful.

Watch this video and watch the TD to Ridley. At the start of the play Ridley is WIDE open. Right in front of Hurts and Hurts does not even see him. This happened almost every time he dropped back to pass at Alabama. Also on the flea flicker, Ridley is open by about 8 yds and Hurts underthrows him so bad the DB catches up and knocks the ball away

Terrible QB. Good leader. Strong runner. Strong arm. Awful awful at reading defenses. ZERO anticipation on throws. Will never ever be a good QB in the NFL

This will be the lead on Get Up, First Take, Undisputed, etc...... Talking Heads will have a field day. If the Cowboys were talking to Eason, University of Washington I would be worried if I was Dak because of his arm talent. Hurts is Dak if he develops.

Your Dak-hate is loud and clear.
mope.... its called negotiations. At some point, its like anything else. I love this house... I want to buy this house, but they are asking 550k. I can only pay 450k... I wait, I offer, but they wont come down. At some point, I need to go buy a different house. Same principal with a QB.

Yeah, that'll show him - taking a guy you admittedly don't like as an NFL QB in the 2nd round.
I dont like him, but who cares what I like. Point is simple. it would send the message to Dak that we like you, we want to keep you, but if you dont budge on your demands, we are prepared to move on without you. Its called covering your ***. Kind of like the difference between being prepared for this crisis, and not.

That would be counterproductive to the negotiations with Dak Prescott. But of course, a person's opinion about that is going to vary depending on how you are now feeling about Dak. The Dak haters are going to love seeing a QB drafted early.

I don't think Dak actually has Cowboy fan haters. I think he just has some fans that don't think he is good enough.

Hurts is not a big time NFL prospect. Accuracy is very suspect and I question any QB coming out of Oklahoma. Big 12 plays zero defense and Lincoln Riley plays sandlot offense. Plenty more guys other than him if Dallas is looking at a top half of the draft QB.
