I feel there's a reasonable chance that Aldon Smith and Randy Gregory still have enough talent left in them to be rotational DEs, if nothing else. Both are likely to take a while to get back into game condition but for short stretches, should be able to prove useful. Here's also hoping this year affords them that opportunity. The last thing they need is to sit out another year. Sorry to mention it but we'll see. Anyway, let's wish them both good fortune! ;)

I'm starting to think this might of been a great move considering the low risk and connection with Tomsula!

From article: Physically, we trained him at Unbreakable Performance and got him up to about 287 pounds, completely rocked up, solid as can be, very low body fat. He has trained his butt off. His conditioning is great. I think he played at 260. We got him to 287. He is just freaking monstrous. We do this hand-fighting drill, me and the guys. We had him on these resistance cords connected to the wall on a machine called the Raptor. I’ve had a ton of guys on it — big huge guys, monsters. Smith ripped it off the wall, doing hand-fighting and exploding off the line. No one has ever done that. He is an absolute freak of nature

Saw this At The Atheltic (awesome site and worth the the money)

great story. Like many, seeing that his current sobriety is less than a year old is convening but he seems to really be taking it seriously

and, of course, the comments about the terrific shape he’s in is great news.

The "dragging it out" part has occurred to me as well. Best-case-scenario: Get re-enstated, then sign with the Cowboys.
Everything I’ve seen appears to indicate that the reinstatement is pretty much guaranteed. He’s been out of the league for so long that Goodell looks at those situations as sort of “time served”.

saw that from several reputable nfl experts

He did rip the raptor off the wall.
In all seriousness its a great move, what do we have to loose, its a win if he is even 70 percent of his initial stud status.

Sounds great! Of course, I can’t help thinking...if he can make the Cowboys truly dangerous, there are plenty of people who will want to keep him off the field. They’ll lobby (discreetly AND indiscreetly), and try to influence Goodell’s decision. Wouldn’t surprise me if they drag out Smith’s reinstatement as long as possible.

LOL.

Again, if he wanted to get re-instated, he should not have signed with the Cowboys!

I have a feeling he is going to explode this season and many are going to regret not signing him. I'm not saying 19 sacks but 10-12 is very doable. I also think him and Gregory will help each other and will lock the RE position down this season....... granted both still need to be reinstated first.
If he’s 287 and a beast he could slide inside with RG next to him. Holy *^%# would that be scary for QB’s. Can’t forget Slots coming off the LE spot.

Clearly this is a low risk deal and I hope he can come in and contribute to this team. Not often do you get a chance to turn your life around, for his sake I hope he has. While he can't go back and change what he has done in the past, he has the opportunity to change what is ahead of him. Like others before him he will be walking a fine line where off the field problems even minor one can sink his future in the NFL. I hope he is wise enough and mature enough to know it

I'm all for giving a guy a second chance but Aldon is on his fourth? I hope he keeps his nose clean regardless of how this works out, he's used up all his passes.

i'm surprised they have him bulked up that much as 285 lbs from his playing weight back in 2015, (260+ pounds)
that pretty much seem to signal they want him as much as a DE than edge OLB.

- i'll wait for the Cowboys trainers to determine the preferred playing weight and regimen than an outside program.
Alden was always a top athlete, but as a pass rusher, what tends to stand out is his enormously octopus long arms,
the technically hand fighting that doesn't allow blockers to get a good handling on him. they cant get stuck on him.

-From limited tubes and clips i've seen of him, i'm really impressed with how tremendously strong and powerful those arms and upper body he is,
he's bull -powering and walking 320+ lbs OTs back into the backfield, before he bends and closes for a sack, his arms and feet never seem
to stop working together and Alden has great bend and shoulder dip moves at that.

- He is not as first step explosive off the on the edge as Quinn or Gregory, but he offers more in terms of pure power. :D

who is Glazer? I mean I know who he is, he is or was on tv. Has he become and agent? Does he have a financial stake in Smith's success?
