It looks like Arizona dumps salary but trading away Johnson. I would say that part of the deal was +1 for Arizona.

Essentially they gave up a second for Hopkins once the smoke clears. We could have netted a third round comp pick for letting Amari walk.

I think Hopkins was worth a second round pick if his contract numbers are $18-20m per year are accurate if you let Amari walk.

Im not saying we should have been involved in that trade, but would we have been better off with giving up a 2nd for Hopkins, and letting Amari walk and getting a 3rd round comp pick in return for roughly the same money?

Maybe?
Hopkins is the best WR in the league.

So basically switching one out for the other? Whoop de do. Hopkins cap hit for the next 3 years is 12.5, 13.5, and 13.9. I would have been all in on adding Hopkins. A move that would actually make a difference.

The difference between a mid 2nd this year and a late 3rd is actually pretty substantial. I'd rather keep Amari and draft a wide receiver with that pick.

I still feel that Amari, regardless of home and away stats, is arguably the best route runner in the NFL (top 3)

Hopkins is a top 3 all-around WR, and a better option WR than Cooper.

Let's go to the numbers:

Hopkins had 104 catches for 1,165 yards (12.1 per catch) and 7 TDs in 15 games. He had five 100-yard games and five with 55 yards or fewer.

Cooper had 79 catches for 1,189 yards (15.1 per catch) and 8 TDs in 16 games. He had three 100-yard games and a 200-yarder and seven with 55 yards or fewer.

Not taking into account how injuries affected either's seasons, Hopkins is the more consistent player while Cooper is the more dynamic. If the choice for me is giving up a first in 2018 for Cooper or giving up a second and Elliott this year for Hopkins, I go with the first option. (I don't think the price would have been the same for Hopkins, though, because Arizona was essentially getting rid of Johnson. However, that possibly would mean that Hopkins also would have cost a first without the back thrown in.)

I think you should watch Hopkins. Coop isn't more dynamic.

Dynamic might be the wrong word. The numbers show that Cooper makes bigger plays per catch, but that Hopkins makes more plays. Hopkins is a force all over the field, so that in no way was meant to be a slight against him. Cooper is a big-play receiver whose biggest knock is that he doesn't make enough plays consistently.

In no way am I saying Cooper is the better receiver. The debate is more about price. Cooper's price was a first-round pick and then $20 million per year to retain him. Hopkins' price was a second-round pick and a starting running back. His contract calls for $12.5 million this year if it remains that way.

I'd love to have Hopkins, but if the price was a second-round pick AND Elliott, I'd rather have Cooper and his $20 million per year. Plus, it would be a poor return on the first-round pick we spent to just let Cooper go after two years, even if we do get a third-round comp pick. (Not to mention it would be cost-prohibitive to trade Elliott after having just extended him.)

Give me a different scenario and my answer would probably be different, but with those variables, I go with Cooper.

Coop is younger and he fits the "Dak friendly" player

and it would be like giving up a 1st & 2nd to get Hopkins since we already gave up a 1st for Cooper

@Verdict That is an interesting way to look at the Hopkins trade and Cooper.
My guess is that Hopkins is the better WR right now. How much is the key. If Hopkins is a 95 and Cooper is a 92 then the difference might not be appreciable.
I think there is a lot more to the picture with Hopkins and the Texans that we do not know about.
Would the Texans have traded Hopkins straight up for Cooper? Would the Cowboys have accepted that trade?

You said Zeke is the best RB in the league, then making it seem others are making the joke....

Yeah, not great Bob.

Not great HOLMES! We agree to disagree, this is not N. Korea where we have to agree or die. You are free to believe what you want. You think someone else is the best and that is what is great about each person, they have there own belief. Now PEACE and ONE LOVE!

Hopkins route-running ability is sick. He's the best!
