Imagine being the first African-American players to play for the Cowboys in the early 1960s before modern civil rights laws. Here are some inspiring guys I will praise for overcoming the prejudices and racism they encountered early in their careers in Dallas:
  • Frank Clarke- great TE and first receiving star for Cowboys in early 60s.
  • Don Perkins- in the ROH. First great RB for Cowboys
  • Mel Renfro- drafted by the Cowboys in their great 1964 draft- member of HOF. Tells stories of how hard it was to buy a house in Dallas as a young black player.
  • Jethro Pugh- great DT on the first Doomsday Ds.
  • Cornell Green- All pro safety of the 60s and early 70s.
This list could go on...All of these guys came to Dallas before the Civil rights laws that protect all Americans now from being discriminated against in housing. All these guys had to endure some racism in the early days of the Cowboys. Mel Renfro tells an amazing story about his struggle with housing when he first came here. All these guys were pioneers and paved the way for future black players.
Fitting perspective there, Hazy.

ONE player only, please.

For me, Lee Roy Jordan. He was always near the ball.

Erik Williams. They wouldn't have won a Super Bowl without him and they would have won one in 94 if not for the car accident.

Defensive players started faking injury to avoid EW before Larry Allen was drafted.

Staubach was also a... *looks it up* ... 122nd overall draft pick.

With a career that started 4 years late because of his military service.

From that to 2x SB champ, Super Bowl MVP, NFL 1st Team All-1970s, HOF, NFL 100 All-Time Team, etc., etc.

Walt Garrison... Had to really respect his hard nose, Cowboy way, just do your job approach to football.

Certainly not the best at his position, nor the flashiest but he remained relatively unchanged despite his professional success.

Ok, and Roger Staubach!

Michael Irvin, not even close.
most influential and inspirational Cowboys player.

Unique hall of fame play maker and extraordinarily unique leader.
Several teammates and coaches have testified how he is the inspiration to entire team, both sides of the ball, ..

Moose from an A Football Life -America's Team Doc: " when the team hit that lull,.. it always seemed to be Irvin that picked us up and out of a slump.. "

Still to this day, per TV or radio Irvin is Loud, Flamboyant, charismatic, and intriguing, appealing character to draws you to listen to him. :flagwave:
