the guy who playing right now,, Gilmore is pretty dang good,.. Mccourtys not bad,.

I think the claim the OP claim Sanders only shut down corner ever is wrong.. he was great is in the HOF but 100 years of NFL football and there are at least 10 Cbs that were considered lock down corners..

Sanders is the best lock down corner but there were a handful more that can be considered a lock down corner as well

I don't agree that any corner has ever been shutdown, meaning no pass could ever be completed against him. Deion did get beat sometimes, but far less than any other corner. I would say that Sanders was the best corner in the history of the game. I don't think we would have won Super Bowl 30 without him. Our best corner before him, Kevin Smith, got injured in the first game of the season and was out for the year. Everson Walls was also a great corner, and probably our team's best player at getting interceptions, but Deion was a better overall corner. Walls was a smart player who was able to compensate for other pittfalls such as his lackof super speed.

There have been a lot of shut down corners. Some of them had a very short window in which they could do that.

Deion was one of the greatest athletes I've ever seen playing football. He was among the best of them, even if he hated to tackle. Dude didn't have to tackle, he was more of a threat to get the ball if you threw it in his direction than the WR was.

I saw the guy play in person several times in Texas Stadium. Man, when he returned punts you could see the fear in the other team.

Complete player. Yep, true shutdown corner. Possibly, probably the best CB to ever play. But others were good too.

You can no more compare people to Deion than you can compare people to Jerry Rice or Larry Allen.

Deion was by far the best corner I've ever seen. He could get beat and then make up for it with pure speed and athleticism. QBs were literally afraid to throw at him. He absolutely did shut down one side of the field on multiple occasions.

Dallas Cowboys Hall of Famer Mel Renfro was.a shutdown corner.

They stopped throwing to his side, to the detriment of new starting CB Charlie Waters. Charlie took a lot of grief before being converted to a safety. That happened when the Cowboys traded for another Hall of Famer, Herb Adderly. This also resulted in their first two Super Bowl appearences

Like Deion, Mel Renfro was also a punt returner, made it to the Pro Bowl his rookie season and the next three as a kick returner. He spent the next seven seasons as a Pro Bowler in the secondary.

Like Deion, Mel Renfro was called upon to play offense due to a large amounts of injuries. In 1965 he averaged 16 yards a reception. Unlike Dieon, this shutdown was not afraid to get physical. He also ran the ball and averaged 6.5 yards a carry.

Ten consecutive Pro Bowls and to this day he still is the franchise leader in INT's. He has 52......same as Champ Baily.....one less than Dieon.
Check..

Check..

Double check.

Saddest moment for all fans was when the refs called he had touched a ball to John Machey of the Colts and the Colts went ahead and won the game eventually.

That play was debated for years and Mel always denied he touched it.
I believed him

Deion hands down is the greatest corner to ever play the game. The whole nonsense of being the greatest cover corner as opposed to corner just doesn’t make any sense. The primary job of a Corner is to cover, I can care less if he doesn’t tackle like Ronnie Lott.

Also, Deion is the greatest Punt Returner of all time. The players ahead of Deion with PR TDs had more opportunities to return punts. No ST coach wanted to challenge Deion in his Prime.

Not hands down.

Champ Bailey has to be in the top 10 in my opinion. I would take him over Sherman, Peterson and Green
Bailey is clearly in the conversation w/ Deion. One year he allowed some ridiculous number of completetions, I think it was 5.

Deion then figured that out and exploited it. He would deliberately pretend to get beat and then use his speed and athleticism to get the pick. It was amazing to see. The whole "take away half of the field" thing was all about quarterbacks getting so scared of him that they would spend the whole game throwing away from him. It was possible to beat Deion, but it was really hard. He's also the only player I gave a pass to for showboating. In general, showboating annoys the crap out of me. I can't stand it when an okay player makes one somewhat good play and then celebrates like an idiot. His team's down by 10 points and then he gets a sack or a pick or something and then dances like an idiot. I gave Deion a pass because he backed up all his crazy showboating and all his talk with on-the-field performance. My thought was he plays so great, he can do whatever he pleases.

Disagree. There have certainly been other "shut down" corners before and after Primetime was in the league. The fact you can't even spell the man's name right shows how little you know about the topic. It's Deion, not Deon, my man. He may have been on the Cowboys at one time but he has never been truly been embraced by Cowboys fans as one of their own. He was a mercenary his entire career always going to the highest bidder at the time his next contract was due... which he did many times. There is no arguing that Deion Sanders is among the best cornerbacks of all time. I'll give you that but saying he is the only shutdown corner denies the talents of great players like Mel Blount, Rod Woodson, and Dick "Night Train" Lane. And even more current players like Charles Woodson, Champ Bailey, and Darrelle Revis and his other brother Darrell Green. Sanders was amazing but he was not unique.

You know, you make some excellent points. Deion, to me, was the best cover corner of all time by quite a bit, but by your definition, he was not a shut down corner. Every corner gave up a play now and then. Deion less plays than other corners, but still, he did give up a catch now and then.
Everson Walls was a very good corner! He got beat more than Deion, but he made a ton of plays. He was another corner that would bait the QB.
