There are a couple shut down corners in the NFL every season. We just don't have one on our team very often. :)

The better question is would you rather have a shutdown corner like Bryon Jones, or a turnover machine corner who took risks like Revis.

Edit: Not saying Jones is a top notch shutdown corner but he definitely held his own, just never took risks and played it safe.
BJones and shutdown corner don't go together, at all.

Agree or Disagree?

The only Shut Down Corner in the history of the NFL was Deon Sanders!

Can be annoying as a analyst, but one hell of a cover corner!

Disagree.

Deion was undoubtedly one of the best, but I can think of many others that were shut down corners. What made Deion special was his longevity, I suppose. He was at the top of his game for a long time.

Darrell Green
Champ Bailey
Mel Blount
Everson Walls
Ty Law
Mike Haynes
Patrick Peterson
Lester Hayes
Lemar Parrish
Darrelle Revis

Prime was the only corner that could allow a WR to have space. This of course was an illusion, because by the time the ball got there, Prime would have been on top of it.

I’ve always said this about Deon Sanders.
He wasn’t paid to tackle, but I never, ever saw him miss a tackle. I challenge you to find tape of Deon missing a tackle. He was soft, and he didn’t use his head or shoulder, but the guys always tied his man up, tackled him by the jersey or held him for others. He was too athletic and fast to actually miss tackles.

He was so good in pass coverage that he didn’t actually shut guys down and blanket them like Revis and others. He would lay off on purpose, daring QB’s to throw to open receivers just so he could jump in and get a pick. QBs didn’t throw at him because they were afraid of his annoying high stepping TD return going the other way.

I think Sanders is the best cover corner I have seen. The man could bait a QB to throw it and then cut in front for the int and once he had his hands on it he was a major threat to take it all way for the TD. I think there have been come other great cover CB but in my opinion Deion was the best.

Deion was the best corner ever to play the game imo and is my favorite player ever

but Darrell green was shutdown as well......
So was Rod woodson

and Mel Blount literally has a rule named after him just so they could open the passing game up

I agree

I think I would add Champ Bailey to that list

I noticed that myself. If an opponent had the ball, Deion could get him and make a non-dramatic tackle, but it got him down. He was never one to deliver a super hard hit that made the opponent pay for his yards (like Darren Woodson), but he got the guy down. It might be a reason for Deion's longevity. So you might say Deion was great at coverage and punt returning while competent at tackling.

Revis in his prime was an all-time great. It's easy to forget because he was buried on the irrelevant Jets for most of his career, but the guy was a machine.

The best thing he did for his HOF case was spend a year on the Patriots and get a ring in what was probably his last season as an elite player.

the guy who playing right now,, Gilmore is pretty dang good,.. Mccourtys not bad,.

I think the claim the OP claim Sanders only shut down corner ever is wrong.. he was great is in the HOF but 100 years of NFL football and there are at least 10 Cbs that were considered lock down corners..
People forget about the past. Too easily. Night train . Rod Woodson

from what i remember reading from some where that went back and did analysis on deion there wasnt a huge difference between him and elite corners today or a few years ago when it was written. the idea that deion shut down an entire half of the field and quarterbacks were totaly afraid to even throw at him were like 99% myth. he was elite and for sure a hall of famer but the idea that he was a true shut down corner was not true.
What a load of BS.

You obviously never saw him play.

Deion played at a speed nobody in the NFL could touch. He was twice as good as the second best corner in the league.

Deion was infinitely better than anyone on that list.

By magnitudes.

Do you remember Revis vs Dez in game 1 of 2011...

FYI, it's Deion, not Deon.
Revis was a great corner. He would be in my top 5.
Yes, I misspelled Deion’s name. I made a mistake. Thank you for bringing it up in a friendly way. Some people around here are not as forgiving.

In my opinion. There are no shut down corners in the NFL today. Also, Deion, to me, was the best cover corner of all time, but by the definition of shut down, was he really a shut down corner?

We recently have had, stay close and make a tackle, after a 1st down corners.

I know some have different reasons for saying they don’t think Sanders is the best ever, but I don’t think anyone can name a DB more likely to score a pick 6 than Deion.

Nobody likes throwing interceptions, but there was about a 4 year period where Sanders was routinely catching touchdown passes from the other team’s quarterback.

Deion was the most over-rated corner ever. Give me Everson Walls over the guy who was allergic to tackling.

I don’t like Deion but nothing overrated about him as a corner. He was so electrifying with the ball in his hands it overshadowed his dislike for contact. No one cared that he wouldn’t tackle. Everson Walls had 57 INT’s but got burned a lot and only returned one of them for a TD because he no speed. He’ll best be remembered for giving up The Catch vs SF in the 81 title game. Despite QB’s staying away from Deion he still had 53 picks returning 9 for TD’s. He had 3 pick sixes in one season for SF. He created the term house call. He also scored three TD’s as a receiver and was a dynamic kick/punt returner scoring 9 TD’s. He’s one of the all-time greatest players. Walls was a very good corner but not even remotely close to the corner/player Deion was.
