Do you take a OT at 17?

my initial thought is no but what happens if your top or second rated guy drops to 17?

I read Bob Sturm’s tackle rankings and he had Jedrick Wills as his top rated tackle and maybe his favorite player in the draft. He had Andrew Thomas as his second ranked tackle.

In Dane Bruglar’s latest mock he has Wills
Going 11th and Thomas going 14th. What do you do if one of these guys drops a little?

Btw Sturm thought Tristan Wirfs is better suited to Guard and listed as his fifth tackle with Josh Jones and Benton rated higher.

I'm in favor of taking the best player.

It would need to be an OT that projects to LT for me to really like the pick.

A LT prospect could start inside early in his career then move outside if a staring OT is going to be out for more than 1 game.

Flozell Adams and La'el Collins both started out at OG.

LT is one of the top value positions and Tyron had been dealing with multiple injuries the past several years with 3 missed games each of the past 4 years.

The Swing Tackle at this point appears to be Brandon Knight who projects best at either RT or inside.

I think Helman said the team loves Brandon Knight.

Let me answer your question with a question. Do you thank Tyron Smith back and neck are going to magically improve in his 10th season and beyond?

Trade 17 to the Jets for Adams. They definitely want a tackle.

If its Wifs, I say screw it, pull the trigger. He's too good.

Becton... ehhh. I might just keep him for the LOLs. Kick Collins inside to guard and watch Tyron, La'El, Martin and Becton blast every NFL D line out of existence on run plays.

Thomas is a good player, but he looks like more of a steady Eddie and wouldn't have the all-universe upside I'd need to justify spending #17 on another tackle. Same with Willis, although he's a scary run blocker like Becton, just less Planet Theory about it. I'd be looking for a trade down if one of those two are on the board, and I bet you I could get one. If you're say Seattle or Tennessee, isn't getting a stud tackle worth an extra third or so?

Josh Jones and Ezra Cleveland are the Connor Williams, Garrett Bolles type athletic tackles that I love on tape but screw me every single year once they hit the pros. Not interested at #17.

That is a very vague statement.

Do they "love" him the way coaches love scrappy over-achievers like Jeff Heath?

Do they love him like they love Looney as a backup?

Do they project him as an eventual starter?

If they project him as an eventual starter, is it at RT or OG?
(He played more at OG in the preseason and practice more there in training camp)

Do they think he can play LT as the game day backup Swing Tackle?

heck ya,you are telling me you will pass on Andrew Thomas at 17 for AJ freaking Terrell? LT is the 2nd most important position in football,at the very least we can entice some team to give up very good draft capital to trade up.

Only if he can play guard to start his career. Can’t justify 17 for a backup

Releasing Smith next year saves 11 million in cap space...just info that may weigh into the decision.

If an OT is available at 17, and he's in your top five....you have to take him.

La'el Collins can always slide in and play guard again.

I wouldn't be opposed to O-line reshuffle....And it would fit the M.O. of what McCarthy has done since he's been here....beef up the lines.

LT- Smith
LG-Mcgovern
C-Martin
RG-Collins
RT-Isaiah Wilson RT Georgia

I was with you till your moved Zack Martin to center.

I would say no....its a deep tackle draft so a good one that can be developed over the next couple of years can be had in 2nd or 3rd rounds.

I'd only be interested if Wills was available. After that, my grades are close enough that positional need takes precedence.

Yeah, that threw me too. You don't want to move a guy that's an All-Pro (multiple times) RG. McGovern or Williams would move to OC in that scenario.
