Drafting Murray wouldn't be the worst thing.
I don't know, we have lots of CBs, safeties & defensive ends with 1 year left on their contracts. Not to mention the quality in those positions is sub-par in our roster.

OU's Kenneth Murray is one of the players in this draft I'd most like to see become a Cowboy, but unless Dallas is transitioning to the 34 defense, I think the pick is used elsewhere.

I heard Murray cannot cover. He was horrible at it and was never tasked with covering at OKlahoma. Do we really want a LB with poor coverage skills?

I think he's a better MLB than J. Smith is, and yes, he needs to work on his coverage skills.

i know i've heard HC McCarthy make mentioned that the team plans to stay with a 4-3 base scheme, but i also have to wonder if these interests in early round like edge/middle LBs an indication of an "eventual " full time conversion to a 3-4 scheme .. or is it any indication of concern for the health (neck) of Vander Esch?

i'm hearing LSU Chassison, Penn State's Yetur Gross Matos, Wisconsin's LB Zack Baun ... Sooner's LB Kenneth Murray, ..among several others. these guys could easily be deemed as 3-4 edge rushers

..could Murray be an addition to the starting incumbent set.. or a replacement ?
The fact that Richard and Marinelli have departed and Nolan is here..

given that the DL FAs we signed in the off season were generally considered a 4-3 defense type player..

you would have to think 4-3 as the base defense but with Lee on a one year deal and Wolf Hunter recovering from neck injury..

looking at a LBer is probably very wise. Our other backups are also on one year deals..

so if a highly regarded LBer slipped to the 2nnd Rd..

I could see us being interested.

I think that is what is being suggested but be careful of smokescreens right now.

Dallas knows how important this draft has become with losing their center, losing their CB and possibly safety still way up there in priority.

I am not sure you go chasing players to staff a defense you maybe use 20% of the time.

Maybe if it was the right player but Dick Butkus retired years ago.

As the old Cheech and Chong skit went..

"Dave? No Dave's not here."

I don't think any of our d line signings point to a 4-3 over 3-4. Poe and McCoy played in a 3-4 last year. Both can fit in a 4-3 but Poe is a 3-4 nose and Mccoy is a 3-4 end. The only other guy I recall signing is Aldon Smith, who is on a non-guaranteed contract

Why are u people reading into media rumors or just rumors in your head when the Jones' and LVE have both said he is 100%.

And Aldon is 4-3.

So is Lee and Wolf Hunter.

Changing to a 3-4 also affects pass coverages. Zone vs man-to-man stuff.

If they are suddenly drafting those positions too, then maybe 3-4 is coming.

I just personally hated the 3-4 as we never had the personnel for it and we had issues fitting players to it. Bobby Carpenter was one bad example.

DeMarcus Ware was a good example.

It was just hit and miss.

If Murray doesn't have coverage skills by now, I doubt he will gain them in the future no matter how much he practices.
If Aldon Smith and Gregory get reinstated, we possibly/likely won't need another edge rusher. SO, Murray won't be rushing the passer or playing coverage. So, he would be pretty much just backing up.

I don't think Dallas is selecting Murray at 17, to be clear, but I do think he's a better player than Smith is. That's my .02.

well, what would you expect them to say ? ...without throwing firing panic to the wind and alerting any other teams that could be interested in the particular LBs they really covet should there be a dire need to have a LB replacement ?
