If you've done a scout report cut and paste it here or write a new one. Keep discussion to a minimum.

My take:

Positives:
  • Really good jam at the LOS
  • Able to get off blocks and make tackles
  • Gets his head around and find the balls
  • High points the ball
  • Exceptional in man coverage
  • Able to stay in phase with his man
  • Reads the ball well in zone
  • Can take it to the house when he gets a turnover
Weakness:
  • Back pedal and footwork underdeveloped
  • Tries to do too much and it costs him against elite talent
Against Ja'Mar Chaise
Negatives:

  • Slips more than once giving up big plays,
  • Tries to be too physical and loses balance costing a TD
  • Rips at the ball several times against Chaise and Helaire costing yards and a TD
  • Over plays the jam at the LOS costing big plays
Positives:
  • Exceptional coming off blocks and making open field tackles
  • Comes off his man to pick of the ball (penalty negated it)
He's got some work to do on his back pedal and footwork, and needs to have more respect for his opponent because sometimes he's cost big plays trying to do too much. But the skill set is exceptional. He can return punts, he's a very good gunner and IMO he's raw Jalen Ramsey. Same size, skill set and attitude on the field but without the elite technique and footwork that allows Ramsey to succeed playing the way he does.

Brugler had him 33rd overall -

STRENGTHS: Tall, long corner with the strength of a safety…lower body twitch to stay composed in his movements and spring in any direction…balanced in space to stay within arm’s length of receivers, easily reacting to different routes…enough long-speed to stay attached to vertical routes…outstanding ball skills due to his hand-eye coordination, making athletic plays on the ball…gets his head turned and keeps an eye on the backfield to read both the man and the ball…skilled with his off hand and understands body position…uses a patient stab in press-man without sacrificing his footing…shows the play strength to shed perimeter blocks…rarely out-physicaled by receivers…competes with tremendous confidence…returned kicks and punts in college, averaging 9.2 yards per punt return (31/284/0).

WEAKNESSES: Not a technically sound player…tends to get lazy with his footwork and stance, hindering his breaks…wasn’t coached to pedal in college…prematurely opens his hips and makes it tougher on himself to shadow…handsy downfield with a bad habit of grabbing to slow routes…late to recognize route combinations…needs to improve his awareness of field landmarks (first down marker, sideline, etc.)…fast and physical downhill in run support, but often arrives too hot with wild tackling technique…missed most of his junior season due to a broken foot (October 2018), requiring season-ending surgery…missed one game as a sophomore due to a right foot injury (September 2017).

SUMMARY: A two-year starter at Alabama, Diggs lined up primarily at left cornerback in Nick Saban’s press-man heavy scheme, occasionally seeing snaps vs. the slot. He was better known as Stefon Diggs’ younger brother growing up, but he grew out of his shadow and carved his own path, playing his college ball at Alabama instead of Maryland and changing his number (wears No. 7 due to Tyrann Mathieu). Diggs arrived in Tuscaloosa as a two-way player and his offensive background benefits him on defense with his ball skills and awareness for what the offense is trying to do. He will drive his NFL defensive coaches crazy with his hopping around and sporadic technique, but his read/react skills and athleticism allow him to get away with it. Overall, Diggs needs to clean up his technique and discipline in coverage to reach his full potential, but he has shown improvement in those areas and projects as an NFL starter due to his size, twitch and competitive nature.

Don't know if I had a scouting report on him, but my general impression is that he's a guy that makes press look easy. Saban clearly coached him up in that regard. He's pretty stiff and I'd be scared to play him in off-coverage, but if you just ask him to jab, turn, and run, he can do that all day.

Alabama Alum here:

Strengths:
- Very strong in press man
- projects to be good at press & bail to cover 3
- strong understanding of Saban’s match to man concept which mixes zone and man concepts. This is used some in the NFL, but more importantly it shows ability to comprehend schemes that are more difficult than straight up press-man
- plus ball skills as a converted WR
- does damage after the interception as a guy who is also a solid return man
- good length, speed and weight
- Prior to becoming an outside corner starter in the NFL (if he doesn’t win a job right away), will be killer at covering TEs in the slot early in career (much like Byron)
- could be dominant if placed in a scheme like Seattle or what Dallas ran under Richard. Sort of like Byron in that regard.

weaknesses:
- terrible tackler, this is the most over-rated part of his game and the most under-discussed. Watch the LSU tape...
- will get called for pass interference in early goings
- will struggle to match and mirror quicker receivers
- will struggle mightily if asked to play off man coverage
- won’t be good at trailing receiver all the way across the field on crossing routes. This is less of a deal when allowed to press but if not it’s a problem (coincides with previous point and points about similarities to Byron)

- Elite size and length for the position. Strong at the LOS in press man, and pro bowl potential as a zone CB.
- Will struggle carrying WR's down the field and will likely need safety help in man coverage.

Sam Shields part 2.
He could be Sherman as well if he reaches his potential. Diggs will get burned early and often until he refines his technique. At worst he could be Elie Apple was for the Giants.

He'll get sheltered reps where he's only asked to play press man in the early going. Given the amount of blitzing Nolan is known for, we'll probably be playing a lot of press man coverage anyway.

Really really terrific analysis! I look forward to more threads/posts from you.

I really can't add anything that you didn't cover. I'll just emphasize a few things that you've already covered.

Cowboys fans should love this aspect of his game: "Gets his head around and find the balls"

Due to playing primarily WR in High School and as a freshman in college, he got to his final college season with significantly less experience at CB than many of the players he was compared against in this draft. He had an injury in 2018 that cost him some games also.

Diggs is an uber competitive player and is really good at the point when the ball arrives.

Some scouting reports questioned his speed but I don't see any issue with his speed. He returned punts and punt returners usually have top notch athleticism.

As you said, he got robbed of an INT in the LSU game because of a penalty due to another player late getting off the field.

He also got robbed on a completion down at about the 1 yard line where the coverage really couldn't have been better. In college a receiver can step out of bounds and back in and catch the ball legally if there was any contact with the defender as he was stepping out of bounds. There was minimal contact but they gave LSU the catch.

Yes, Diggs have up a TD catch in that game but LSU QB Burrow made a perfect throw. Burrow made some out of this world accurate throws in that game.

His primary negative is that he just needs to tone down his aggressiveness; however, it is much easier to coach a player to tone down aggressiveness than to coach a player to become more aggressive.

A lot of people had him 3-4th best CB behind Gladney

Sam Shields part 2.

Shields was all speed, and a much smaller player. I like the Sherman comparison given the size and style of play. In the right scheme similar to Sherman, this guy can be devastating. He can also be exposed if not deployed correctly.
