I see Connor Williams as more of OT than a guard and have since the day Dallas drafted him. That is where he excelled at Texas and why he was drafted to the NFL. I think putting him a Guard was a mistake.

:clap:What's interesting is the kid never played guard prior to being drafted. Yet we not asked him to change positions as a rookie but play at a high level as a starter. Remember posting a while back he should be our swing tackle. This way we killing two birds here ........swing tackle AND Tyrone Smith backup and just maybe Smith replacement.

I agree. I think OT is where his strength is and I would having him working behind Tyron Smith whose has been dealing with back issues for a while now and really not sure how much more time he can play.

I'm also aware of his off season personally.. I'm a wedding photographer whom does lots of celebs and sports figure's weddings and talked to a few guys about where he is at.. Lets just say he is bigger and stronger and 100% recovered.

I have to say that this would be incredible news. However, I find that a little hard to believe. Cant work out for months when you blow out your knee and have to take it slow after. Usually these guys don't get their strength and confidence back until the 2nd year.

Well from what I hear he is doing normal workouts and the injury wasn't as bad as it was reported.

I'm not down on williams at all, he is going to be great this season! He is doing things at a normal pace as far as growth.. Remember, this forum tried to run Dlaw out of town after two seasons as well... Chill..

Board is spoiled.

Fred and Martin coming in as good as they were as rookies is not normal.

Martin was one of the top G in the league out of the gate. Fred was literally teaching 6 time pro bowler Brian Waters the offense.

That's not normal

I’m just glad to get a new set of eyes on all of it. Was so tired of JG and his crappy coaches evaluations.

I think the line will be strongest if he is the backup all along the line.

McGovern wins the starting guard job and Biadasz wins the starting center job.

Basically 2 rooks on the online right beside each other? Not sure the cowboys brave enough for that.

Biggest question is where will he be in terms of his knee injury come. That could cook him in any competition.

I think he is the more talented player, but McGovern is the more natural OG.

For the record, I thought Williams improved significantly in 2019

What I'd like to see the team do is have the young linemen getting some practice reps at several positions:
  1. Williams on the left side, left guard and left tackle
  2. McGovern at left guard and center
  3. Biadasz strictly at center
  4. Knight at right tackle and right guard
  5. Hyatt strictly at left tackle (to see if there's anything there worth keeping)
Given how much they rest their veteran starters, there should be plenty of reps available for the young guys to learn.

This makes a lot of sense. I hope this staff does a little better job allowing the younger guys to get some quality work through-out the year too so they are better prepared if/when they fill in for Tyron or Martin etc.

Agreed.

For what it’s worth, I’ve heard a rumor that they might even sign Ron Leary to add to the group.

Still don't think it's quite as easy to tell Connor Williams they are going in another direction for LG late in camp, now you're the swing tackle, and he would be ready to play that role on gameday.

He needs to get serious reps at both tackle spots asap for that to be the case.

The fact that he was a college LT and not a super effective NFL guard supports the point that not everyone can just move all over the line and be effective.

The best role for him on this team is swing tackle. Let's see what the coaches end up doing.

I understand why they did it but I think it was a mistake. Williams ability at OT working against DE who tend to have less bulk and more speed than DT he has to face up the middle. You can say it is a easier transition but the demands on a G are different than that of OT.

yes, the OG's demands are different but it is not as demanding and difficult as the tasks of an OT.
Those guys are outside on the edges, on an island, they can't always get double help and have to be counted on more one on one.

As with Williams being a mistake at OG- .. what else should they have done when they drafted Connor ?
if we already have Smith and Collins slated at OTs, so Conner had to be at OG. - and there was already a need at LG.
the only other options was:
1) not drafting Williams at all ..
2) or moving Lael back at LG, while Williams starts at RT.

It was greatly assumed that when McGovern was drafted as early as the 3rd rd., that this move would allow the team to choose to let Lael to walk as a FA , thus
allowing Williams to move to the RT role, as McGovern assumed the LG role.

We got it wrong, as Cowboys were firmly committed to re-signing Lael long term to the OT spot.
And you don't draft prospects in the early rounds to keep them around as backups.

If McGovern comes in and looks like a beast I wish they would move Williams to OT. They could really use a great swing guy and we all know Smith can’t be relied on. Williams is a great athlete, he just isn’t stout enough for the interior. I would like to see what he can do at T.

G and OT are 2 different spots and yes the demands are different, most DT are a lot more stout than edge rushers and footwork is critical for OT in dealing with that. In terms of you don't draft early for backup? true but you also do not draft a player then move him to a position he has not played, seldom does that turn out for the best. Hopefully this staff will play guys in their natural position instead of moving them around.
