The Cowboys have drafted well in the aggregate over the past decade. Only one team has produced more pro bowlers. Most of the busts have been on one side of the ball and concentrated in one position group specifically. I’ll let you speculate as to which one.

Where I think there is a difference is that the positional profiles for the Cowboys under McCarthy aren't as specific as they were under Garrett. This is where the whole "draft talented players, and we'll coach them..." comes from. Under Garrett, he had specific positional prototypes that he had the scouting staff go find. That in itself will reduce the number of players considered when building the draft board. For example, when Kris Richard got here, he didn't want a cornerback under 6 feet tall and with less than 32" arms. McCarthy isn't as restrictive.

You can argue that having a larger pool for consideration allows you more leeway in being able to select players, but at some point, the pieces have to fit together. This is where coaching comes in.

That's always been the knock on mccarthy..he has no system...

Huddle up

You beat your guy, you beat your, and you just run fast..break

True. We'll have to hope the marriage of Moore and McCarthy offensively provides the right mix of innovation and wisdom.

Every coach has a system. They aren't in the huddle drawing up plays in the dirt.

You don't think so? I remember Romo and Witten drawing up plays in the dirt and TO didn't like it

Well, the GM stayed the same. The scouts stayed the same. The strategy changed to players over system. Hmmm … I wonder why?
Did the GM decide his system over players strategy was wrong? I don't think so. So, what else could it be? Who left?

I joke. Truth be told, we have drafted well the past decades regardless of which coach was here. I think it was just pure luck the stars just aligned for three days and everything fell in place - BPA aligned with need to provide awesome value. Lightning struck 7 times. Not all that surprising considering there was a lot of lightning in this storm of a deep draft. I think numerous teams did well. Cowboys just did the best on paper.
Some of the scouts are different. A couple left for the raiders. They hired Kubiak's son to scout the midwest and moved the midwest coach to the one in the south that left for the raiders

That is music to my ears. It gives me great hope for this team's future.

Same here! I love hearing that. With the way it sounds like McClay reacted, I think Garrett and clown car made him find players that fit his system as opposed to simply the best players that he could find like McCarthy seems to want.
